We looked at many hotels on both sides of the border at the falls and eventually gave in and decided to spend the cash - not a cheap hotel, but it was worth it.

We only had two nights there and could have done with another but by staying in the park you really can make the most of your time there. With a room overlooking the falls we could see and hear them all the time which was fabulous. They were apparently running particularly high when we were there after a lot of rain two days before we arrived, then perfect weather, so we were really lucky.

The hotel, as others have commented, is lovely, the service is great and am sure when the renovations are complete it will be spectacular. But the restaurant (though again, it still boasts good service) is both expensive and limited - and since you really are pretty much stuck there, we resented having to pay a lot for not much.

Otherwise the travel agent, all the front desk staff and even the maids were endlessly helpful and polite and we would recommend the hotel without reservation - if you can afford it.

The clincher for us was definitely going for a walk in the morning before the park opened and quite literally having the entire network of paths and viewing platforms of the Brazilian side to ourself - we didn't see another person in the entire hour we were walking. Being alone with those falls was truly special and worth paying just for that.

Oh and if you can get a waterproof camera before you go, it's a great thing to have on the jet boat!

A bustling check in was over in 10 minutes as we were shown to our room, whereby we were lucky enough to have a modest size room overlooking the falls, which are few and far between taking into account the size of the hotel.

After unpacking we went to explore but found ourselves lost, going round in circles, with no direction signs in the internal corridors of the hotel, and not really having orientated ourselves, we found ourselves laughing that we were trapped and found ourselves in the offices of the staff! No matter, we soon found ourselves in the lovely gardens and an absolutely fantastic swimming pool. Later that day, after a 2 hour guided walk of the beautiful falls on our doorstep, we relaxed by this large, well kept, deep blue pool. The beds weren't on top of each other and you had your own space; the pool was warm and we were offered face towels, pineapple water and a vodka smoothie type drink. It was a lovely way to spend a late afternoon, with a most beautiful sunset straight ahead, so beautiful that we were able to dash to our room to get the camera and go the the falls viewing area for some great photo's as we were that close!

As said, our room was modestly sized, not huge, wooden floors but it smelt new, as did the corridors, walls and restaurant area - all very nice. It was a pleasant room with a small bathroom, but we were not in there much to be honest, but the view of the falls in the distance and the rumble of the water together ith the chirupping of the birds made it a lovely feeling. Whilst the renovation work was clearly progressing, it did not impact at all on our holiday.

Breakfast was fine with a decent buffet of normal hot and cold fare, with lovely bread, ham and cheese. Dinner we found expensive and restrictive. Considering there is only one restaurant open at the moment, the menu was not sufficiently varied for our tastes, with only 5 or 6 options, mainly fish, especially for starters/appetisers. Luckily they had a special on of fillet steak so that did me, but I felt the menu could have been more expansive until at least the other restaurant was open, which seemed imminent from the work I saw going on. Since we could not go too far, stuck in the park, we ate there for 2 nights - the service and quality of the food was excellent, but I stand by my comments above.

There is a small lounge area off the main small lobby, with log fire and 2 computers. This seemed very uninviting and many a time early afternoon/evening, I saw people sitting in the dark, with no or little lighting nor fire lit. They could have made so much more of this, and perhaps they will when fully open.

The hotel itself is lovely and we would stay there again providing 2 restaurants were open! It was spacious on the whole, the pool area shone for us and obviously the location was outstanding at any time, just being able to wonder down to the falls. It is amazing how quickly the clouds can obsucre the view and on our second day it rained almost all day which was such a shame as we could not enjoy the pool or the falls so much, but that was a small detraction from an overall great 2 day stay.

We squeezed only two nights there during a business trip to Rio, but it was well worth the expense. We opted for the add-on of an airport pick-up, dinner and eco-tour. The hotel is very elegant and the staff very helpful - from the reception to the lovely lady in the Travel office to Paulo the chaffeur. Renovations are in progress, but that area is blocked off and noise kept to a minimum. Our room was at the front of the hotel and overlooked the falls, which were magnificent after a few days of heavy rainfall. They were especially nice in the morning before all the tourists arrived when we had the entire place to ourselves. We even had time for an excersion to Itaipu Hydo and a half day over on the Argentinian side of the falls. It was all good.
The only downer was the unscrupulous helicopter company who kept us waiting for more punters to turn up and even sent us to the back of the queue went a tour group arrived. After an hour wait, we told them where to go, but suddenly the guy couldn't understand English. At $US180 for 10 minutes, they are greedy and don't deserve custom.

I spent one night there with my boyfriend. The hotel has been renovated and now it is a real 5 stars hotel (some rooms still closed for renovation). Everything was perfect, there is a heated swimming pool. the restaurant is incredibly good. Moreover we had the possibility of having a private tour of the park with a guide (biologist) at 8 am in the morning before the opening. this was very unique! To reach the hotel in the park closing time you need to take a taxi from the park entrance of from Foz.

Wow, what a hotel. The building and surroundings are undeniably stunning and the refurbishments are bringing the rooms and grounds in line with this. Whilst the refurbishments are happening only the newly refurbished rooms are open so you're guaranteed a new room. Not huge but beautifully decorated and very comfortable. I must say that we weren't disturbed at all by the refurbishments. The level of service is the best I've experienced in a very long time and I've stayed in a lot of nice hotels over the years! Beds turned down, bedside mats provided, bathroom cleaned and tidied again, bottle of water at the side of the bed, weather forecast provided, and, of course, the obligatory chocolate...and that was just whilst we were at dinner! It was very cold during our stay (cold front from the Antarctic via Argentinia apparently) and they had a roaring log-fire lit at all times, which was very much appreciated after a day outside. To top it all off there's a fabulous taster of the falls right from the front door. We had a very early pick-up when we left but there was tea/coffee and cake provided for us in reception. The pool looked lovely (understandably we didn't test it out but if it had been a bit warmer we definitely would have been tempted!) I'd say that the only down-side is that it is so far away from the town. This is, of course, the appeal of the hotel but if you don't fancy anything on the menu at the pool restaurant (the only one that's open at the moment) it would be a long way to another restaurant. The food is a little pricey (compared to Rio) but it is exceptional and well worth the money. The complimentary Caiprinha was rather delicious too... My only regret is that we only stayed 2 nights!

We spent two nights at Hotel das Cataratas and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Our room was spacious and comfortable and the view of the falls from our windows was a real plus. The grounds, service, and hotel amenities were all superb. We would highly recommend this resort.

My husband and I travel to Brazil often and loved our first experience at Das Cataratas!
This tropical colonial style hotel in the middle of the Foz do Iguacu park is breathtakingly beautiful, comfortable, enjoyable with excursions underneath the falls in a jeep, boat and on top of the falls by boat (for only the brave-hearted). Walking trails are a wonderful experience, and our trip to the Argentina side allowed us to see more of this amazing waterfalls ... it is 10 times larger than Niagra with more than 100 waterfalls over a large area, visited by almost every USA President! It is the trip of a lifetime and thrill you won't want to miss! On our trip around it to ride the canoe across the top of the falls, we encountered thousands of beautiful yellow butterflies all over the area The soothing sounds of waterfalls from our room, with tropical birds and tame wildlife visiting the pool and grounds is a tropical paradise not to be missed!
