“Breathtaking and nearly perfect!”
Reviewed 25 October 2009

We loved our stay at the Hotel das Cataratas! My first glimpse of the falls honestly took my breath away, arriving after 2 days of rainfall which made the falls spectacular, with a rainbow stretching all the way across! We arrived early from Sao Paulo and were escorted to breakfast as our room was not ready and enjoyed a delicious breakfast and watermelon bellinis - what a way to start a spectacular 2 nights! Our small but oh, so comfortable room overlooked the falls and it was mesmerizing to look out and hear the sounds. The staff was mostly accommodating, housekeeping staff superb, turn down service with chocolates AND havianas! Food choices were somewhat limited, but we discovered the restaurant at the top of the falls and choose an early dinner on our second night for variety. The most extraordinary experience was having the falls to ourselves in the mornings and early evenings, wonderful and amazing, memories to be treasured forever. Rafting trip was so much fun, highly recommended - surprisingly, no safety belts or shoes! The very best multilingual guide - Anderson - he's got my vote for Minister of Tourism, an exceptionally charming and knowledgeable young man. Near the hotel with saw toucans and one monkey to complete the experience. The only complaint would be challenges of WiFi. Not available from our room and the staff seemed to frown on our effort to find an isolated place to listen to football on Saturday night even though we were the only ones on the front veranda and the sound was so low we had to hold the computer near our ears). I was disappointed that some staff were aloof and less than friendly, but most were helpful and charming. We were never bothered by noise of the renovations. Definitely the only way to see the falls.

Arrived to be told the hotel was being refurbished but building work would "only" be from 9.30 to 5pm. However, woken early first morning by shouting and building work. Most facilities are closed (no lounge or bar). The only place to eat means a walk outside to a conservatory type building with no atmosphere - not good when it is raining! Where the place is open you have to dodge painters and carpet layers. Probably a good hotel once it is finished but AVOID - or take your paint brushes and a hard hat!

A really good location for the hotel with the falls outside the window. They are currently updating the hotel so there was a lot of drilling going on - this didn't disturb us though and it only happened during normal working hours. The pool is good and they are very attentive. There was only 1 resturant open which seemed to have the same buffet each night - tasty but it got boring. The room was newly refurbished and looked over the front of the hotel towards the falls. Very clean and new - the maid service was excellent! I have never seen my clothes so neatly folded! We had some lovely walks when all the tourists had gone which really makes this hotel special. They will also organise any tours you want to do with a local company just down the road who come and pick you up in electric jeeps - very handy!

We stayed in the hotel for a weekend and WOW!
The staff all very competent, especially the lower, as the maids, housekeepers, and caregivers.
Since the driver highly educated and kind to our super mama a travel agency, Ms. wavy hair, and the manager's reception desk.
The only weak point out the works they produce a sound inadmissible for a hotel of this size.
As for food, we got a normal menu, no major surprises, but with prices that surprise (if somewhat expensive)
Finally the principal was the thrill of the ride jet boat.
Adventure recommended for all.

This is our first time in Brazil; we stayed for three nights in Rio de Janierio before travalling to the Iguaccu Falls. We stayed for two nights in the Hotel das Cataratas. We choose this hotel because of the good reviews on trip advisor and we were never disappointed. The check-in staff spoke English very well; they supplied us with a weather forecast for the duration of our stay and were very helpful. The colonial hotel is set in the middle of the Fos do Iguacu national park and is a superb location for the falls. Orient Express now own the hotel and are doing an amazing job of restoring it to its former glory. We received a letter from the Management apologizing for the inconvenience of the renovation work but it did not impair us anytime during our visit. The rooms were served by wide hallways and the whole atmosphere is plush and luxurious. The hotel's appeal is due to its location and stunning uninterrupted views of the falls that just cannot be beaten. We had a superior room with dark wooden polished floors, comfortable king-sized bed, flat screen television and air conditioning. There were also complementary bath robes and flip flops provided. THe min bar items were more astronomically expensive than usual ... 10R$ for a can of Skol beer. The only criticism of the room were that coffee making faculities were not provided. The bathroom was well equipped and nicely decorated with a oversized walk in shower with a seat. After our plane journey we went to our room to refresh ourselves before rejoining our guide who was waiting in the reception. The lobbies are all identical and we got completely lost, we were going around in circles, with no direction signs to reception. Only one of the two restaurants were open due to restoration work. At breakfast we were offered a glass of champagne, the food was amazing with a huge selection of fresh tropical fruits, cereals, scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and coffee. The downside was the dinner it was very expensive and only a la carte menu was available. The food was of poor quality. It was cheaper and better to hire a taxi and eat in a restaurant in Fos do Iguaccu. The new swimming pool was large, deep and is surrounded by confortable sun loungers. There is a pool bar. The trail walk to the falls starts directly outside the hotel. We then toured the Brazilian side of the falls ..... Awesome!! The next day we toured the Argentinean side of the amazing waterfalls. This is a trip of a lifetime and a trill you do not want to miss.

We looked at many hotels on both sides of the border at the falls and eventually gave in and decided to spend the cash - not a cheap hotel, but it was worth it.

We only had two nights there and could have done with another but by staying in the park you really can make the most of your time there. With a room overlooking the falls we could see and hear them all the time which was fabulous. They were apparently running particularly high when we were there after a lot of rain two days before we arrived, then perfect weather, so we were really lucky.

The hotel, as others have commented, is lovely, the service is great and am sure when the renovations are complete it will be spectacular. But the restaurant (though again, it still boasts good service) is both expensive and limited - and since you really are pretty much stuck there, we resented having to pay a lot for not much.

Otherwise the travel agent, all the front desk staff and even the maids were endlessly helpful and polite and we would recommend the hotel without reservation - if you can afford it.

The clincher for us was definitely going for a walk in the morning before the park opened and quite literally having the entire network of paths and viewing platforms of the Brazilian side to ourself - we didn't see another person in the entire hour we were walking. Being alone with those falls was truly special and worth paying just for that.

Oh and if you can get a waterproof camera before you go, it's a great thing to have on the jet boat!

A bustling check in was over in 10 minutes as we were shown to our room, whereby we were lucky enough to have a modest size room overlooking the falls, which are few and far between taking into account the size of the hotel.

After unpacking we went to explore but found ourselves lost, going round in circles, with no direction signs in the internal corridors of the hotel, and not really having orientated ourselves, we found ourselves laughing that we were trapped and found ourselves in the offices of the staff! No matter, we soon found ourselves in the lovely gardens and an absolutely fantastic swimming pool. Later that day, after a 2 hour guided walk of the beautiful falls on our doorstep, we relaxed by this large, well kept, deep blue pool. The beds weren't on top of each other and you had your own space; the pool was warm and we were offered face towels, pineapple water and a vodka smoothie type drink. It was a lovely way to spend a late afternoon, with a most beautiful sunset straight ahead, so beautiful that we were able to dash to our room to get the camera and go the the falls viewing area for some great photo's as we were that close!

As said, our room was modestly sized, not huge, wooden floors but it smelt new, as did the corridors, walls and restaurant area - all very nice. It was a pleasant room with a small bathroom, but we were not in there much to be honest, but the view of the falls in the distance and the rumble of the water together ith the chirupping of the birds made it a lovely feeling. Whilst the renovation work was clearly progressing, it did not impact at all on our holiday.

Breakfast was fine with a decent buffet of normal hot and cold fare, with lovely bread, ham and cheese. Dinner we found expensive and restrictive. Considering there is only one restaurant open at the moment, the menu was not sufficiently varied for our tastes, with only 5 or 6 options, mainly fish, especially for starters/appetisers. Luckily they had a special on of fillet steak so that did me, but I felt the menu could have been more expansive until at least the other restaurant was open, which seemed imminent from the work I saw going on. Since we could not go too far, stuck in the park, we ate there for 2 nights - the service and quality of the food was excellent, but I stand by my comments above.

There is a small lounge area off the main small lobby, with log fire and 2 computers. This seemed very uninviting and many a time early afternoon/evening, I saw people sitting in the dark, with no or little lighting nor fire lit. They could have made so much more of this, and perhaps they will when fully open.

The hotel itself is lovely and we would stay there again providing 2 restaurants were open! It was spacious on the whole, the pool area shone for us and obviously the location was outstanding at any time, just being able to wonder down to the falls. It is amazing how quickly the clouds can obsucre the view and on our second day it rained almost all day which was such a shame as we could not enjoy the pool or the falls so much, but that was a small detraction from an overall great 2 day stay.
