“The best place to stay in Foz - fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2009

It's really the best place to stay in Foz do Iguacu.

Location: inside the brazilian side of the Iguacu waterfalls. Perfect. Outside the park opening hours, you can have the waterfalls only for yourself, without the crowds... As we went running in the morning, you see all animals, monkeys in the trees - just amazing nature. And the sunset at the hotel is just beautiful
Rooms: very chic colonial style, spacious, great bed, good shower. Although the hotel does not "sell" their rooms because of the view, you can request it during your booking. Beautiful!!
Service: fantastic. Everyone is really helpful, very friendly, and they really do their upmost for you. And they all speak english! :-)
Hotel facilities: the swimming pool is great, and the breakfast is delicious! For dinner, the restaurant is ok - the service is great but the food is nice, but not fantastic and rather expensive (about 3x as expensive as a good restaurant in the city) - but it's not worth to leave the hotel for it.

What i didn't like: the airport is less than 15 min away from the airport in a straight line. however, the hotel charges 90BRL p.p, which is outrageous. Just take a taxi - will cost you about 30BRL. If you are with two persons, you will save 150BRL (about 60EUR). The same applies for the packages they offer leaving directly from the hotel, everything is super over charged - and although i don't mind paying a premium for the service, it was just too much.

A few tips:
- do the extra effort to wake up early and enjoy the park before all the tourist crowds.
- there is no need to rent a car, just take taxis. It's still cheaper and you don't have to worry about maps and all.
- MUST do's: Brazilian side, argentinian side, macuco safari and the helicopter tour. the bird park is also nice. two to three days are enough to see it all.

Not much to add about location. I mean, wow.

Standing on the viewing platform on your own at 730 am as the sun crests the lip of the falls,on your own, before the hordes arrive, is worth the room rate several times over.

As others have noted, it's a work in progress. Once the refurb is done it will be beautiful. And have full facilities.

The restaurant is currently in effectively a large conservatory. The "bar" is a temporary small hut next to the pool. Outside bar + dusk = bug central.

Meals are very very good indeed, but the restaurant staff are not well organised. Both mornings at breakfast we were asked multiple times for our room id, and having to ask multiple times for coffee is annoying. The staff mean well, and smile a lot. But they are not well organised and I suspect need more training.

Dinner is much better. The buffet's good -(you get the impression they'd prefer everyone to have the buffet perhap because of capacity issues with the current state of the hotel) but the a la carte is actually excellent once you've asked for it. Really excellent actually.

(And a tip: Brazilian wine is hardly world famous, but the bottle of rose we had was as good as a good cotes de provence rose.)

Rooms: OK. But the building constrains things. Bathrooms are small. Ironically within spitting distance of a massive flow of water, you only get a bath if you've forked out the wedge for a suite.

Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely building in a quite mindblowing location. But it's not done yet. It has the potential to be magnificent. I'll be watching the reviews next year to see if it can fulfil that.

The hotel has recently been bought by the Orient Express Group and is coming to the end of a major renovation programme.

We stayed in one of the renovated rooms and it was beautiful. The location is amazing - opposite the falls and this is the only hotel in the park on the Brazilian side which means that you get the park to yourselves before the tour buses arrive in the morning and when they've left in the evening.

The renovations are evident within the hotel but we were told that they are likely to be completed by the beginnning of Jan (2010) so some of the facilities (spa, business centre and conference rooms) were not in operation and there's only one restaurant which served an expensive (for Brazil) buffet- type dinner. However the service was friendly and nothing was too much trouble for the staff.

One of the highlights of our stay was the morning walk in the forest with the hotel biologist - Wilson who was extremely interesting and passionate about the flaura & fauna within the park and the falls area.

We had to fly from Buenos Aires so crossed the border by taxi - which is a pretty long drive and there doesn't appear to be alternative transport.

This hotel was one of the nicer ones for over a hundred dollars a night. The pool was lovely, the service was always prompt, and they had a spa (yes, you had to pay for it) within the hotel. The gym was really not a gym so don't expect to work out. They had a restaurant, a bar, and high-speed internet (shared with all guests). The only bad thing was that it was in the middle of no-where, but a cab ride was only 10-15 pesos or less. The staff was fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. They were very helpful in showing us all the things we could do and see while in Iguazu. Also, from cheaper places, I talked to a lot of people that were really unhappy....

Stayed here for my wife’s birthday weekend in November 2009. Lashed out on a junior suite on a ‘stay 3 nights, pay for 2’ promotion – the room was still not cheap (best part of £300 per night) but it was excellent in every respect. We had no problem, none at all, with restoration work. Only sounds we heard were the waterfalls across the road!
The great advantage of this hotel is the unique location – within the park. This means you can get up early and in 2 minutes be looking at these fabulous falls –and, even better, the only other people there are also guests in this hotel, because the park only opens to allow people in as of 9 am, but you’re already ‘in’. And you get the place to yourself (kind of) as of 6 pm too. The difference between 8 am and 10 am is about 3000 people (or so it seems). And the light for photography is way better in early morning and late afternoon too.
The disadvantage is that you’re a long way from anywhere else, and in terms of evening meals they’ve basically got you cornered. The food was OK (only one of the restaurants was open when we were there, restoration) but not exceptional. What was a bit exceptional was the price. We had the grill buffet, which was OK but not great range of options and a fairly staggering 93 reais per head (roughly £32.00, without drinks): Porcão in Rio, a fantastic buffet place, charges less than this. Wine list was restricted and pretty expensive too.
But that was the only down-side in our opinion. As said above, the room was excellent, and we found service from every person in the hotel to be excellent (special mentions for Eva the chambermaid, Junior at reception and Bruno at breakfast, plus some excellent waiters whose names I can’t remember). Pool area is lovely too. Also thanks to Danielle who organized our excursions: don’t fail to go to the Argentinean side too, and the Macuco Safari trip to get soaked, and the Bird Park (Parque das Aves), all exceptional.
I recommend the hotel highly, but it won’t suit everyone in terms of price and its distance from other things to do in the evenings. But for a great weekend in a wonderful nature location, can’t be bettered. Four and a half stars. Just make sure to take insect repellent when you go out for a walk in the evening (nothing to do with the hotel, this).

We loved our stay at the Hotel das Cataratas! My first glimpse of the falls honestly took my breath away, arriving after 2 days of rainfall which made the falls spectacular, with a rainbow stretching all the way across! We arrived early from Sao Paulo and were escorted to breakfast as our room was not ready and enjoyed a delicious breakfast and watermelon bellinis - what a way to start a spectacular 2 nights! Our small but oh, so comfortable room overlooked the falls and it was mesmerizing to look out and hear the sounds. The staff was mostly accommodating, housekeeping staff superb, turn down service with chocolates AND havianas! Food choices were somewhat limited, but we discovered the restaurant at the top of the falls and choose an early dinner on our second night for variety. The most extraordinary experience was having the falls to ourselves in the mornings and early evenings, wonderful and amazing, memories to be treasured forever. Rafting trip was so much fun, highly recommended - surprisingly, no safety belts or shoes! The very best multilingual guide - Anderson - he's got my vote for Minister of Tourism, an exceptionally charming and knowledgeable young man. Near the hotel with saw toucans and one monkey to complete the experience. The only complaint would be challenges of WiFi. Not available from our room and the staff seemed to frown on our effort to find an isolated place to listen to football on Saturday night even though we were the only ones on the front veranda and the sound was so low we had to hold the computer near our ears). I was disappointed that some staff were aloof and less than friendly, but most were helpful and charming. We were never bothered by noise of the renovations. Definitely the only way to see the falls.
