Owner description: Largest hydroelectric power plant in the world, Itaipu is the current world record holder in power generation and is considered one of the 7 wonders of modern engineering. Built on the Parana River, the seventh largest river in the world, between Brazil and Paraguay, it is 8 km wide, has a maximum height of 196 m and a lake of 1350 km². Itaipu enchants not only for the dimensions and technical aspects, but also for being a vanguard in sustainability and tourism, with several options of visits, from the classic Panoramic Tour and the award-winning Special Tour, that leads to the interior of the plant, to boat trips on the lake and night tours of the plant. Visiting Itaipu is to know, closely, what human capacity can accomplish.

The size and height of the dam is simpl unbelievable! I strongly recommend to buy a SPECIAL TOUR ticket (!!! Do not buy the PANORAMATIC tour ticket, where there are only two stops of the bus to take pictures!!!!!!). During the SPECIAL TOUR (which is not cheap but it is great value of your money!), you will visit all the main parts of the dam including generators, control room etc and you will have a lot of opportunities to take great pictures. The guide was brilliant and answer all our questions.
Great experience.

Film before tour all in Spanish as was tour though do write lots of the numbers in film which is good so you can understand that. Interesting to see dam and scale of it, did bus tour to look out and around the dam. It was free which was also good. Need to take passport or other ID along. Think it might have been better on a sunny day but I was there in pouring rain. Got local bus from Ciudad del Este and back which good value.

Easily accessible by bus, we visited the dam as we had sufficient time during our stay in Foz do Iguacu. It was certainly a very good visit, with a guide who made sure he explained it all to us in English (we were the only two english speakers on the bus). Although it wasn't the highlight of our holiday there (how can it be in comparison to the falls), it certainly was very interesting.

This tour of the largest hydroelectric plant is great. They even furnished an English speaking guide and I felt I was on my own private tour. Interesting as to all 26 generators and the size. Also how the dam is divided between Brazil and Paraguay and the work areas for each. You go inside as well as on top of the dam.
On the way you see many animals which are protected and roaming free. There is also a evening light show.
Tremendous water being released and rainbows everywhere. Well worth the time.
