Owner description: Largest hydroelectric power plant in the world, Itaipu is the current world record holder in power generation and is considered one of the 7 wonders of modern engineering. Built on the Parana River, the seventh largest river in the world, between Brazil and Paraguay, it is 8 km wide, has a maximum height of 196 m and a lake of 1350 km². Itaipu enchants not only for the dimensions and technical aspects, but also for being a vanguard in sustainability and tourism, with several options of visits, from the classic Panoramic Tour and the award-winning Special Tour, that leads to the interior of the plant, to boat trips on the lake and night tours of the plant. Visiting Itaipu is to know, closely, what human capacity can accomplish.

“Interesting for the girls, riveting for the guys”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Something went wrong with our booking and we could only do the video show and the bus tour outside the dam. We were assured the video show would have English sub-titles - it didn't but we managed to understand bits of it. The bus tour was very comfortable and efficient, so unlike the real buses on the streets. The commentators were knowledgeable and entertaining. The two men in our party were fascinated and intrigued by the massive engineering feat, we girls found it interesting and scenic in some parts. We two couples had shared a taxi from near the falls entrance, the driver waited while we did the tour, the cost was reasonable although I can't remember exactly how much. I suggest if you ask someone to do the booking for you, that you get someone else (a change of shift at the reception desk where you are staying perhaps) to check that the booking has been made. We were disappointed to not do the full tour but would recommend the bus tour if the cost is an issue.

“worth seeing”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

The Itaipu Dam is impressive no doubt. One of the largest in the world. If you have an extra half day in Foz after visiting the falls (of course) then seriously consider a trip out to the ITAIPU dam. This mechanical wonder (literally) is barely 20 mins from town and has an excellent visitors center.

“Worth it if you have time”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

The Itaipu Dam is impressive no doubt. One of the largest in the world. We did the 'special tour' which includes a 20-30 minute video, a tour inside the dam, and a panoramic tour. The video was great and very informative. The tour inside the dam was neat although it seemed very short. The panoramic views were the best part for me. If you have extra time in Foz do Iguacu, this should be on your list to do. We did an 8 am tour and finished around 1030am and had time to make our 1pm flight. They have English and Spanish speaking tour guides as well. The cost of the special tour is a little under 30 USD.

“A bit of a let down”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

We were only able to do the outside of the dam as the other trips were booked up. It's an hourish tour, but to be honest, it was pretty rubbish. The dam Doesn't look at all impressive, it's only when you look at it from the Paraguay side that you can appreciate it's size. The trouble with that is you can't get out because technically you're in Paraguay and the bus doesn't stop. If you've in the area, it's worth a look, but not worth the 40 minute bus ride from the centre in my opinion. Perhaps it would be different if you went inside
