We just returned from a weekend stay at this property and ‘wow’ what a different perception compared to the previous report. We found the staff EXTREMELY friendly and helpful. I had made the reservation for the hotel via a 3rd party website at a very reasonable price, but it had only listed “Junior suite”. I assumed this automatically meant a double or king size bed. Well, upon arrival the very friendly receptionist Marcus pulled up the reservation and on his own asked if we were aware that we had been booked into a room with two twin beds. After clarifying that my wife and I did not anticipate that type of sleeping arrangement, he immediately changed our room. Since our arrival was anticipated on the first room, the new room was still being cleaned. We wanted to at least change into some beach clothes to which he replied smiling “no problem” and walked us to the room. The maid was cleaning the room and very discreetly and nicely stated for us to take our time to change and she would return in about 15 minutes. We then left for the afternoon to take a boat cruise and eat some lunch. After returning we relaxed in the very nicely appointed suite (room 3) and took a nice long nap before our night in Buzio. The Air Conditioning worked great and the room was quiet and comfortable.

We went to breakfast around 10, at which time it seemed like the rest of the guest of the hotel wanted to join as well overwhelming the one staff member on duty at the time. She remained calm and with a smile took our orders for omelets and fried eggs. Breakfast offered various fruits, breads, cereal, juices, and yogurt, with a decent enough selection. The staff members refilled our pots of coffee a few times – each time with a smile (and a few were needed to wake-up from a late night spent at Rua das Pedras).

Afterwards we asked about a late check-out and the receptionist Marcus checked the availability of rooms and arriving guests and ended up telling us to take our time, go to the beach, and we could check-out as late as 4pm. This made us very happy and gave us more time at the beach with a chance to freshen up before leaving Buzios. He then continued very nicely to explain the different beaches and how to get there.

Location wise it is nestled in the hills with incredible views from the reception area, but within – albeit not that close - walking distance of Rua das Pedras. I like the central location do the type of travel I like – which is to explore and go to different places using either scooters or rented cars (or beach buggies in Buzios). We had rented a car and went to several different beaches in Buzio’s. Using that approach transportation by car would have been required regardless of location, including if we had stayed directly on Rua das Pedras or a specific beach. Renting a beach buggy – if you arrived by bus – would be a great option for this hotel to allow for maximum flexibility.

My wife – who is Brazilian – commented several times on how nice and attentive the entire staff was and how much she liked the hotel. We both felt like we came home to a small home of ours each night due to small size of the hotel, versus a hotel.

This is not a full service hotel – but rather a small intimate boutique hotel. A very nice laid back place and we will mostly definitely return there the next time we visit Buzio’s.

Stayed here with my wife over new years 2010.

This has got to be one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed at - do not waste your money here like we did. The website is a complete farce and is misleading. You will regret every day you spend here if you do.

1. On our 1st night arrival (after long flights and a long drive) we were given a rather cold welcome and moved into a master suite - room 1. The room we were put in had a terrible stench/smell which was extremely difficult to sleep comfortably in.

In the morning we made concierge at the time aware of the bad smell in our room. He came to check the room and AGREED with us that there was a terrible stench. After some consideration, the concierge told us that the stench/smell was actually coming from the next door property as they were doing pool maintenance.

We're not sure we agreed with this but decided to move on - either way, forget apologies - we got none.

2. On the 2nd day we were moved to room 3 (junior suit which luckily didn't have the same smell.) However, the room overlooks an under construction garden with no grass and riddled with garbage bags (photos to be posted) and in the morning we were woken up by drilling and hammering from workers on the wall outside our room. Again, unacceptable when you are paying a room premium. Surely after a disappointing 1st night we shouldn't be put in a room with workers on our outside wall while we are sleeping??? In addition to this at US$400-500 per night during peak season you expect a better view than an under construction garden. Poor.
Had we not prepaid for our accommodation here, we would have picked up our bags and walked out.

3. Breakfast - On the 1st morning, the hotel had 1 staff member at breakfast cleaning dishes, making breakfast and serving the various guests at the hotel and was struggling to keep up. The breakfast offering is extremely poor and there is hardly a selection of food to eat. I ordered an omelet and was so frustrated after 30 minutes that i didn't receive anything that I stood up and left. Want a decaf coffee - well you need to pay for that.

On our 2nd morning we decided to arrive at breakfast at 11am to skip the other guests and ensure that we get service as we knew the property struggled with serving guests (at least on the 2nd morning there were 2 staff members at breakfast having obviously learnt from the previous morning). However, that evening we got a letter from the front desk that breakfast closes at 11am and if we arrive for breakfast again at 11am, we will be charged for it. Unbelievable. Perhaps I should get a refund for not getting breakfast at all!

4. Pool - on our first visit to the pool there were no towels anywhere near the pool. We had to go upstairs (3 flights) to arrange towels from the front desk as they don't bother leaving towels at the pool. In fact, the pool is deserted and you'll struggle to find any staff member anywhere near this area. Forget about getting any drinks at the pool area. Forget about getting anything at all.

5. Internet - the hotel/posada provides free wi-fi in the lobby only. No access available anywhere else. In addition to this the internet available in the lobby is so slow it is virtually unusable. When I asked about this at reception I was told this is because there are to many people in buzios (never mind the hotel) and the Internet all over buzios is slow?? I tested this theory out by going to an internet cafe in the centre of town. Internet in town was perfectly fine. Porto Bay again misleading its guests.

6. Management - The posada has no leadership, management or presence. When i asked to speak to a manager I was told there was no manager at the property as the manager was in Rio at the sister property - this over the properties busiest and most expensive period of the year! how can you not have a manager at a hotel during peak season!!

I demanded to speak to a manager and was told the only way I could speak to the manager was via e-mail so after numerous attempts to connect to the slow internet in the lobby I managed to send a detailed e-mail to the manager (Naomi) - over a week has passed since we left the property (and I call it property as there is no ways you can classify this as a hotel) - and im still waiting for a response to my mail.
Not only has Naomi not bothered to reply to the mail, we haven't heard anything from him/her regards our complaints to front desk.

However, I bet they'll now respond to this tripadvisor post.

7. Staff - You can count the staff at the hotel on your finger as the property runs on minimal costs and service is non existent. Nobody cares how you are doing, or what you are doing. This is not a hotel nor it is 4 stars - its a self catering flat with cleaning service at best) - Be prepared to be ripped off (and without even a smile).

I would never recommend this establishment to anyone. Save your money. Buzios is amazing and there are great places to stay at but this isn't one of them. Location also isn't great as its a 10 minute walk from the centre of town and as others have mentioned you need to walk down a dark quiet road and won't feel very comfortable doing so.

Nobody at the property cares about you and not once had we been asked if we've been enjoying our stay and if everything is alright particularly after our 1st night experience which was terrible.

Porto Bay - be ashamed. This is truly disappointing. I dont know how you get away with it but I believe that ultimately you will pay the price for the type of establishment that you are.

On check out I mentioned to the concierge that I still hand't heard from the manager so he proceeded to tell me that they would refund us our 1st night fee - we are still waiting for the refund.

In summary - Porto Bay - never again! Be warned - this is not a hotel no matter what they claim on their website and no matter what they reply to this message. I will be forwarding this note to the CEO of Porto Bay as well as I doubt he knows what a shambles this property is.

In summary - worst we've very been to (you will note from my other reviews on tripadvisor over the years that I never criticize a hotel to this extent)

Hotel was pretty enough but then again EVERYTHING in Buzios is pretty enough. For much less than the price we paid we found out on the trip we could have stayed at a much more charming and better located hotel right on the beach. The female concierge was a little unorganized but accomadating the mail concierage was a total idiot and was not about to help anyone but himself. Our room was much smaller than described, especially for 4 people. The pool was beautiful but frigid, pretty upset about that. The breakfast was the hotels only strong point. Fresh, lots of variety, delicious and served in a beautiful little enclosed patio.

All in all, we were quite satisfied with our 4-nights stay at Porto Bay Glenzhaus. Nevertheless, this hotel is still missing that "extra something" to become a true 5* property.

The location is not one of the best in Buzios. Although the walk to the center of the town is only 5-10 minutes, the area is not very well lit at night and the road to the center is quite deserted. We never experienced any trouble on the way, but still didn't feel 100% comfortable walking there at night. If I were to visit Buzios again, I would definitively book one of the pousadas closer to Rua das Pedras.

The hotel interior, gardens and the pool area are very nicely decorated and guarantee a pleasant and comfortable stay. We had a junior suite with a huge balcony overlooking the small pool area. The suite was very spacious and offered all amenities needed for a nice stay. I particularly liked the small touches, like the Porto Bay Havaianas that waited for us in the bathroom.

During our stay, the hotel's central machine that takes care of too much air humidity went broken and the staff gave us a smaller substitute machine directly in the suite. It did help a bit to lower the humidity, but it was unfortunately so loud that we couldn't fall asleep. Still, the feeling of sleeping in humid bed sheets was not something i would like to experience again.

The breakfast was served on the pool area by a very friendly waitress (we managed to understand each other although she didn't speak English at all). The buffet selection and quality, though, were not what we had expect from a high class hotel.

We stayed 3 nights here and it was a great experience. The staff were all friendly and the breakfast was great. The main town is really close and quite a comfortable walk. We hired a 'buggy' for a day and saw all the beaches. On the whole a very quaint little town and a really good choice to stay at Glenzhaus.
