We took the standard room , which is more expensive than the simple, due to location, according to the attendant, but there was nothing good on the location of the room , there were no windows , no natural ventilation , moldy walls , the bedding smelled musty , the towels were filthy, and the worst : the toilet was already clogged when we arrived. The rooms are too near, wall with wall, so you hear all the noise from the next room . The sauna was not working . Breakfast only starts at 8am and goes only until 10am , so if you wake up early, and it was our case, just give up. I asked for a fruit because I wanted to run on the beach, and I did not want to go on an empty stomach , but the front desk attendant , completely unfriendly , just spoke "only after 8am" , and I just asked for a simple banana. The most impressive was when we tell her that we accidentally broke a little bottle in the room and we had gathered together the pieces on a cloth on the bedroom door , so she should send someone to collect , to prevent someone from getting hurt , she told me that I should catch and throw in the trash (I had no tools to clean!) , or I should wait until after breakfast, because before that she could not send anyone to do this.

Room Tip: Don't book this place, pay a little bit more if you can, or stay a little bit far from the beach...

Billed as the Blue Marlin Resort, this hotel lacks most of the amenities that foreign visitors would expect from something labelled a "Resort", but is pretty much standard fare by Brazilian pousada standards.

That said, a little background info is needed. I am an American who has been living in Rio for more than 10 years, and have had many experiences with Brazilian pousadas and hotels over the years. Both good and bad.

We went to Geriba (Buzios), as a group of 3 middle aged couples and probably would not be looking for the same amenities as a young family with kids. The Blue Marlin (hotel or resort) that I found was clean, spacious and friendly. It is not Club Med, nor is it Courtyards by Marriott. The room that we had a queen size bed plus a separate single bed, TV on a table, one night table, telephone, open shelf closet, small refrigerator (frigobar) a small safe (without a lock, I assume you went to the office to get the lock). The room was spacious, airy and bright, no sign of bugs or vermin, as had been previously reported in other reviews. The bathroom (large stall shower, no tub) was clean and showed no signs of mold or mildew, which is a common problem in the area. The hotel's amenities seem to consist of the pool and the hot tub (only hot for one hour a day, from 6 - 7pm and by reservation) so don't plan on a lot of hot-tubbing.

The pool was a medium sized rectangle of approximately 10 x 7 meters (30 x 20 feet), as I did not go into the pool (nor did any others of our party) I can't tell you how deep it is, there are cutouts in the concrete sides of the pool, but it did not have either a diving board or ladders to assist getting out from the pool, so I would expect that it would be a little difficult for children, the elderly or disabled. It was clean and filtered.

The other amenity that I know of, but did not use was the sauna/steam room. There is a game room, with some lounge chairs and a computer terminal, but I don't know if there are any games there... We chose to spend most of our after dinner time on the porch in front of our room, which contained enough room for a table and 6 chairs and was spacious and convenient for all 3 couples.

As I said previously, the hotel room and other venues were clean and well maintained; the dining area/restaurant, served the standard pousada breakfast in generous portions, 8 fresh juices, a multitude of cheeses, breads, sweet rolls and cakes. Yogurt, ham, fresh fruits, coffee, tea and milk were properly prepared and the warm stuff was warm and the cold stuff was chilled. No cream cheese though. The hotel staff was friendly and considerate, especially the dining room/restaurant staff. Not having much more than a nodding acquaintance with the maintenance and cleaning staff, I can't comment otherwise about them.

The other two couples with us, both had rooms which were not "end" rooms, so they were a bit smaller, but there were no complaints regarding the rooms' cleanliness, facilities or bugs...

The hotel is in the prime area of Buzios, and is a stones throw from Geriba Beach, one of the finest beaches in Buzios. A short walk along the beach will take you to the entry pathway to Ferradurinha Beach which is a small gem of a beach hidden between the intruding cliffs on the northeast end of Geriba Beach.... (That's to the left, for those of you who left your compasses at home...)

The hotel itself is on the first street along the beach, but is not beachfront as there are other buildings, i.e. condos and pousadas on the other side of the street, so you won't be looking out of your windows on a pastoral seascape. The area where the hotel is located is 4 kilometers away from the center of Buzios, and about 1.5 kilometers from the nearest commercial area, so plan to drive and look for parking which is usually a problem in Buzios or to take cabs to get around. And even though the hotel reception staff will tell you that the cabs only take 4 people maximum, be aware that there are several 7 person taxi vans available if you need that much room.

All in all, the Blue Marlin in my estimation is a cut above the average pousada in Brazil, but it is not a Rio de Janeiro beachfront hotel, so don't expect Marriott amenities... It would be nice if they left the hot tub warming for a longer period of time, and they should install ladders to help getting out of the pool, but those are minor issues.

Boa viagem...

Room Tip: Try to get an upper floor end room like #7, as they are quieter and a little larger than the average...

We stayed in Blue Marlin for three nights. The disappointment was great when we arrived and saw the room and the rest of the hotel. We should have known that photos can lie - and they sure did. For the price we paid, we were expecting at least a 3-4 star hotel, this was more like a 2 star. The room was small, and since ours was on the ground floor and we had to close the curtains unless we wanted people to look in - very dark. There was a bad smell coming from the aircon, and the bathroom was tiny. The breakfast was ok, rools with ham and cheese, plenty of various cakes and muffins and fresh fruits. It was difficult to get a table , because the staff did not clear quick enough after people had finished eating. On two out of three mornings we took our breakfast outside instead. The swimming pool was tiny, but we didn't bother since the beach was only a few minutes walk away. The beach was very good, although lots of waves so we had to be careful. There were lifegards on duty, and we watched them rescue someone who had gone too far out.
On the positive side, tje hotel was very clean, the beds were were comfortable, so we had a good night sleep.

The reseption personnel was very friendly and helpful, but only one person could speak English, so it was difficult sometimes to locate him.
