“Beutiful setting, but not 4 stars”
Reviewed 3 May 2011

An excellent for the location is really deserved - the stunning views from the veranda are unique. The hotel is on the steep hillside. Bear in mind that you can get to the hotel either by boat (the pick-up by the hotel boat is included only when you check-in and check-out) or walking on path filled with rocks, roots and through the sea water. The hotel rooms should have been renovated some time ago - esp. the bathroom (some fungus between the tiles). Also to notice is that the rooms are very humid and the noises from the adjacent rooms are clear. A smelly hammock just takes space away. The star rating maybe was appropriate years ago, but now it seems to be too high.
Power black-outs are beyond control of the hotel, but they are the fact (we had two during our two-night stay). The staff is very helpful and friendly. Breakfast is simple but very tasty. The dinner we had at the hotel was excellent, much better than what we tried in the village. The "very good" value rating is thanks to a promotional offer.

Asalem was the first place we stayed in Brazil after an exhausting 48 hour hour trip from the US. We arrived very late but were welcomed warmly and found our room to be clean and basic. No luxury here but the surroundings and the views are beautiful. Breakfast in the morning was bountiful and the staff quite helpful. The owner was gone until our last day and when he returned the customer service got much better. Perhaps it is the island way but we didn’t get much in the way of concierge type help from the regular staff although they were very sweet and lovely. Andre, the owner was extremely helpful and we wished we had ore time to talk with him. He has lived an interesting life. We ate at the Pousada one night and the dinner was on par with other well reviewed restaurants on the island. I wold go back in a heartbeat!

This is a beautiful location, and they serve dinner overlooking a magical bay. Spent Valentine's evening there, which was great. Even the view from bed was stunning in the morning, overlooking the bay.

The water is warm and flat, and just makes you want to laze by the beach all day.

It's quite busy on the island in high-season, but always has a really slow pace of life. So the beaches are not empty - after treking through the jungle and past the giant spiders we reached a beach that had a load of people on it with a cruise ship moored just off it.

The staff were lovely as well, and very helpful and sincere.

Things we didn't like so much were the noisy air conditioning. It was necessary as it was really hot and humid at night, but sleeping without earplugs would have been difficult.

Also don't expect the internet to be anything than painfully slow. But this is an island, so not entirely unreasonable, but is potentially tricky considering we rely on the internet so much these days.

It is rustic as they state on their websites, and you are literally in the jungle which is cool. But it does mean that there are bugs, for example a worm like creature in the toilet bowl was a little unnerving, but not unreasonable considering the jungle setting.

We had a bit of confusion over the taxi boat, and although they had sent someone to pick us up we didn't find them on the jetty, so we asked a local taxi boat to bring us to the island, but he was really unhelpful and ripped us off a bit.

Basic, but expected as in the jungle. Just don't expect luxury, but expect to be in a jungle paradise.

Thank you for all your comments.

We had noticed the air-conditioned noise before your post and were making arrangements for the change, which is now done. We wish to have you back in a near future to check it out.

As for the internet, it is out of our control. The whole island is affected by the poor connection delivery, often slow. We try to minimize it as best as we can by having different alternatives such as radio connection and also a modem that works with satellite signals; neither of them satisfactory. Rumors of implanting a signal tower are heard over a decade but considering it would be a very expensive project for a small group of users/tax payers (4.000 citizens living in the island) it is not worthy it for the company provider business profit. So we are hostages of their own interests.

Our taxi boat is limited to the surroundings of the main village. Basic transportation information from the coast to Asalem such as shared and private transfers can be found in our website on "How to get there". And more detailed information with wider choices can be provided upon request.

Again, thank you for your comments. They are solid precious tools that help us to improve Asalem.

After a busy few days in Rio with lots of crowds this was the perfect escape. We loved the schooner ride over and then the little taxi boat to Asalem. We had one of the standard rooms which we enjoyed very much. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. The breakfast was sufficient. The people who worked there very friendly and helpful. Not recommended if you can't do steps. My only wish was better directions to the pier in Mangaratiba. We got lost a few times coming from Rio and just barely caught the last schooner over to the island. The first night we took the water shuttle back to town to eat. Great restaurants there. We tried and tried to get the boat attendent for our ride back but it took almost 1/2 hour to get him. That was a little scary with our cell phone going dead and no idea where the trail was back to the Asalem. All-in-all a great little hide-away with lots of nature and privacy.

The price is very high for the service.

The "taxi-boat" should be "free of charge" for guests, at least one meal should be included on rate and common area need to be upgraded urgently.

However, the managers is extremely friendly, the view is great, the location is perfect and a trip in a kayak is amazing.

Stayed there in October for two nights. Great view!!! A bit dificult to get to though. You are really dependent on a boat if you have kids. People that manage the hotel were very nice and they had great food. Even a fantastic lunch pack to take when hiking on the island. They need to get a better boat and need to offer better access from and to Abraao. Great place though

Spent 3 nights here, 1 in the honeymoon suite and the rest in the standard rooms as we booked too late to get all 3 nights. After getting mixed up with the boat timings we missed our pick up from the hotel boat so walked in the direction we thought it would be. With back packs and after a long trip it was a bit of a struggle but found it no problem. We checked into the honeymoon suite and it was amazing. It’s very peaceful with great views and very romantic. it is a bit away from the other rooms and very nicely designed.
The last 2 nights we spent in the normal rooms which are still very nicely designed and still have the great views.
It is a bit of a walk from the main area but we think that is a plus point. Their boat will take and pick you up from the main area any time you want and its nice to be away from the busyness of the main bit.
It’s not the cheapest place to stay but the staff are great and the rooms are very nice. Unfortunately it rained the whole time we were there but we still had a lovely end to our honeymoon.
