Paraty Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #259 of 308 Paraty B&B and Inns
Reviewed 11 June 2009

We stayed for 6 nights and had none of the problems mentioned in the other reviews, we had a great time there. There are lots of mosquitos, not just round the B+B, but we just kept the fly screens closed on the windows if they started to bother us. The staff, including the owner Ross are great and Claudea was very helpful. Good breakfast, kitchen use, free internet, TV with DVD's and a perfect location, one block outside the expensive historic centre. The other guests were really nice and the place was always dead quiet at night. If you are used to nice hotels then maybe somewhere else but as a couple of backpackers we found it very comfortable at a great price.

Chose this place whilst desperately seeking accommodation over the new year period. Paraty itself is a wonderful town and I would love to return again someday - but will be avoiding the Bed and Breakfast!
Firstly, after corresponding with the owner via e-mail, he told us that he would personally greet us at the bus-stop and take us to the hotel....WRONG!! He was no-where in sight, and when we called the hotel his assistant could not speak a word of english! The cab drivers at the bus station did not seem to recognise the address, and I was beginning to worry that the place didn't even exist! After being given vaguely correct directions from a local (not many speak english), we managed to find the place after searching on foot and lugging our bags around the streets for half an hour! On arrival the brazilian assistant showed us to our rooms - which did nothing to lift our moods - the rooms were extremely basic, non air-conditioned and basically reminded me of being on school camp.
At this point, the owner miraculously appeared and asked us to sort out the payment....'are you serious!!?'
I felt sorry for his assistants, I got the vibe that they were his personal slaves - they did everything, cooking breakfast, cleaning rooms, checking in guests etc... Not too sure what the owner actually did at all??? Very strange!!!
Basically, it's not the worst place to stay, its in quite a good location, very close to the historical center of town - but I would avoid it if possible, there are so many better places to stay in Paraty - we only stayed here as a last resort!!

We stayed at Paraty B&B for a few nights as part of trip to Brazil and I wouldn't recommend it. The room itself was OK, although there were lots of mosquitos in the place, but the bed was the most uncomfortable bed we had on a 6 month trip around the world. The pillows were like lumps of concrete and we ended up moving after 3 nights as both of our necks were in pain! The owner doesn't seem interested in running a B&B and was nowhere to be seen most of the time, leaving his Brazilian staff to answer any questions you have. Breakfast was pretty average, but the location of the place is pretty good for Paraty (not in the old town though).
On the whole, we felt pretty unwelcome, and left having had little sleep due to the lack comfort. Avoid.

Paraty Bed & Breakfast unforutnately turned out to be the worst accomodation I have ever "stayed" in to the point that we had to sleep in the car. This was mainly due to the inability of the owner to run a B&B.

We arrived at 10pm as promised and Ross (the owner) was not there. We waited outside until his father turned up - he couldnt find the keys and we spent another 15 minutes waiting. We eventually were shown the room and to our shock the place was infested with mosquitos. We asked for fly spray and went for dinner. When we returned we were horrified to discover Ross had used outdoor strength weed killer to try to kill the mosquitos. The result was that the room was toxic with fumes. I have no idea why he would do this! We tried to sleep in the fumigated room but as soon as we sat on the bed it collapsed. The light in the bathroom did not work and at that point we decided to sleep in our car.

The next morning, Ross was not to be seen. We complained to one of his workers who could not believe the owner had used the outdoor stength pesticide to kill the mosquitos. I refused to pay and wanted to speak to Ross. Unfortunately, Ross avoids complaints and gets his local staff to do his dirty work. I left with the distinct impression that the local staff are not treated very nice and I only paid 20 of the 100 Reals for water use and luggage storage.

If you value your health and sanity, please stay elsewhere. Choose one of the quality pousadas run by the friendly locals.
