“Beautiful Pousada in a beautiful location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2013 via mobile

I loved our stay in this beautiful Pousada... Let me first mention that quality of accommodation combined with good service is a bit of a 'hit &miss' in Brazil altogether. So this place is well ahead of any competitors.

1. Location is superb as it is placed conveniently in the historic and arty center of Parati as well as being close to the pier where all tour boats are departing from. It is in a quiet part of the town, however just 5 minutes on foot and you will be enjoying live music and great food.
2. We got upgraded by the hotel manager unexpectedly since they found out from our travel agent that it was my mum's 60th birthday trip. The suite was superb, clean and beautifully decorated in traditional local style retaining most of the quirky fittings of this building

3. Service was great especially by lovely Desiree and Maria Clara. They were very well spoken, helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.

4. Breakfast was good too ... Lovely fresh fruits, breads with cheeses and meats, lovely selection of teas, good quality coffee as well as scrambled egg etc.

5. Hotel has a small pool as well as steam room and sauna. Laundry service is very affordable and could be done on a same day. Definitely a good place to freshen up your wardrobe if you are on a long tour of Brazil like we were.

We hope you enjoy this lovely hotel as much as we did. Thank you

It's always hard to define whether it should be 3 or 4 stars... I am giving a 3 because of the breakfast. I will come to that later.

The good things first:
- Really nice colonial style building. Very peaceful, charming, the real style of the city
- location is wonderful, you are inside the city, but in a quite area of the city (very important!)
- the common areas are very nice, the swimming pool, bar, etc. Simple, but according to the style of the city.
- The staff is the best part. Outstanding! Everyone from the front desk, to the restaurant, to the helpers. Very very friendly and helpful.

Room for improvement:
- the bedroom was ok, but very simple. We have no real complains, except a little smell of mold. nothing major. But I thought the price was too high for what it was being offered. I know prices in Brazil have gone up a lot, and Paraty has become an expensive city. Still, I thought the rooms should be better for a hotel in this category.
- the breakfast was ok overall. Enough options, delicious Brazilian fruit sweets. The fruits were not very tasty. The issue was the eggs and the butter. The eggs were honestly disgusting. Like they were there for 5 hours or more. This was not acceptable. And the butter had mold inside. Maybe it was bad luck, but after opening 5 different small packages, all with mold, we gave up.

I have to say that the owner wrote me an email (I left feedback), apologizing and mentioning actions to improve service. It was the first time I received an email back from a hotel, it shows the commitment to improving services. That was nice.

I still recommend the hotel overall, but just wanted to leave my remarks for other travelers.

This place is over hyped.
Our booked double became a twin over the road in the other building. But worse the system to get in is to go to reception and ask for the electronic door to the street to be released, every time you need to go to your room. Then you walk across the yard puddles (loads of rain in January) and up the wooden stair (which creates foot fall noise inside the upstairs bedrooms).
Our room had various noise creators, fridge, fan, air con.
The lavatory was cramped into the end of the wash basin top.
So we did not care for our room. The public spaces were better, but it is one of those places with a bar and no bar staff. The pool was not interesting enough and I thought the water looked cloudy when we arrived.
Breakfast was in a pleasant room with hiding staff! The pre cooked scrambled eggs disgusting.
Eggs cooked, slowly to order a lot better.
The reception staff charming.
Would not stay again.

Room Tip: Try the main building.

First of all thank you for your review. Only with reviews, we are able to improve our service and installations in order to guarantee the satisfaction of our clients. It’s a pity that we didn’t know about your disappointment during your stay, otherwise we would have tried to change things in order to guarantee a pleasant stay.

About your review:

We confirmed with the agency that made your reservation and they asked us specifically for two single beds. If we were informed during your stay that the bed composition was wrong, we would have changed that immediately.

We had a meeting with our staff reinforcing a more attentive service during breakfast and at the bar in order to guarantee a high standard service for our guests.

We also checked the air conditioning system in your room and we did not notice any noise that is not in normal parameters for a split air conditioning, we do not have any fans in the room you stayed in and for the fridge we are searching for new fridge models without compressors.

As we already answered to your roommate in his review, I will simply copy the same response about our building and the electronic door:

The opening of the door in the villa is controlled by the reception for safety reasons. We do not feel safe giving all our guests the key of the main entrance of the hotel, since we are responsible for who enters our premises.

Pousada do Ouro is located in the historical centre and the room you stayed in is located in a 18th century building, constructed mainly with wood. The whole historical centre is registered and protected by the Historical and Artistic National Heritage Institute (IPHAN), so Paraty has let modernity pass it by without hindrance. Paraty is also a candidate to become a World Heritage Site. Since the entire construction of the pousada has a landmark status, we are not able to change floors, ceilings and so on, however the installations of the pousada are very well maintained. Unfortunately wooden floors do make more noise than concrete, but that is part of Paraty's colonial charm.

With the tropical rains it unfortunately is difficult to avoid puddles in the outer areas.

We hope for your understanding and that we may serve you better in a next opportunity, changing your impression to a better one.
Regards,
Pousada do Ouro and Team

We loved everything about the pousada, the rooms, beds, showers, breakfast, location and staff. We arrived by bus, so be aware that to get to the historical part of Paraty it is quite a walk on cobble stone paths, so a taxi is recommended!
We only stayed one night but we managed to enjoy the pool and bar area at night and a few games of snooker where the nice barman trusted us before he left with enough drinks to finish our game.
Good to know; WiFi Internet is free here, they have a great selection of brazilian music and staff speak very good English at the reception.

A very romantic, cosy and magical little pousada, and if you can stretch your budget a little, I would suggest getting a superior room for a little more space.

This was chosen by our UK travel agent. Of the four hotels so far in Brazil it was the least comfortable. Our room was small and the two single beds the smallest I have slept in. Noisy not-so mini-bar fridge. Rather primitive plumbing. Good powerful shower. The beds were not changed that I could see while we were there. Our room was in the block across the street from the main block and access was allowed by asking reception across the road to open for us. The wooden staircase to our room and the latter's ill-fitting door meant that corridor noise was excessive.
Very helpful attentive reception staff all of whom we dealt with spoke good English.
Breakfast is in a large airy bright room in the main block. Eggs can be cooked to order but getting attention was difficult. Staff seemed to focus on clearing tables than ensuring settings were complete. So service was slow and too often platters at the buffet of sliced fruit etc were left empty and not topped up.
The pool is pleasant as are the lounges in both buildings. So it all looks nice but really they need attention to poorly furnished rooms and inattentive service at breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask about rooms in the main block and check the size of room on offer.

First of all, thank you for your review. Only with reviews, we are able to improve our service and installations in order to guarantee the satisfaction of our clients. We are very sorry for your disappointment.

Below are some comments to your review:
All our room installations as bed size and plumbing are standardized.

Since we are part of “Green Hotels Association” we are interested in saving water and minimize the effects of chlorine and detergents to our environment. Therefore we dispose an informative card visibly in your room, that explains that we will make your bed every day but linens will only be changed when required, by simply placing the card on the bed in the morning.

The opening of the door in the villa is controlled by the reception for safety reasons. We do not feel safe giving all our guests the key of the main entrance of the hotel, since we are responsible for who enters our premises.

About our service at breakfast, we have already reinforced to our personnel to be more attentive in order to guarantee a better service.

We hope to be able to receive you again at Pousada do Ouro sometime soon and that we may change this impression next time.

This Pousada is a little jewel in Paraty. We sadly only spent 2 nights there and wished it could have been longer. A beautiful colonial building, very tastefully decorated and spacious, comfortable rooms - we had one of the normal doubles with our 3 kids in an adjoining room. High ceilings, good air conditioning and really comfortable beds and bathrooms. The pool area is a little oasis with a great bar in and amongst rainforest greenery. All the staff are incredibly helpful and great linguists. I must add a note of special praise for the general manager, Isabella who is one of the most outstanding hoteliers I have met in a long time. I only hope the German owners are aware of her extraordinary flair because her people skills, efficiency and attention to detail are quite exceptional. Given that our stay included a few of the typical hiccups which can befall any traveller ie lost suitcases, unusual transfer requirements etc, she went out of her way to solve our problems for which we remain eternally grateful!

Room Tip: Paraty can get a little noisy in the summer due to the musical activities in the nearby plaza. Its...

This place was so nice. My Wife and I are from Vancouver BC Canada, I've been all over the world and hands down this was one of the nicest boutique hotels I have stayed in. The pool and bar area feels like your in the Amazon. The front desk staff speak really good english and all their food and restuarant recomendations were spot on. Breakfast was great here and the feel of the place was just awesome. They also booked us a private boat trip and provided us with a really nice operator. Great place to stay, highly recomend it.

Room Tip: Book early, we were lucky to get a room. This hotel seems very popular.
