Just came back from Alfaia. It was fantastic. My wife and I ordered the cod fish balls as an appetizer. They were great. Then we had a half order of the octopus in the house style with sautéed sweet onions, the most incredible olives, green pepper and tomato. This was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten in 57 years. The octopus was gilled and incredibly tender. The flavors exploded in your mouth. My wife completely agreed. Then we had a 1/2 order of Cod Bahian style that was excellent, but paled against a dish fit for the gods. This was an incredible amount of food. The orders are large. We could not eat dessert. The restaurant is relatively small and the service was excellent. Portuguese everywhere; happy people celebrating. Great energy. We were there for 2 lovely hours. Total price with wine and tip was $R 226. The best place we ate during our time in Rio.

We had a very nice meal at this little place. The seafood was fresh and delicious. The service was attentive and friendly. Our only concern was that the atmosphere was dull, to put it nicely. They had no music playing and we were there on a quiet Monday night. Otherwise, we would highly recommend this place.

Very good service in a nice restaurant in Portuguese style.
Cod variations between 150-180 Reais or half portions 75-85 Reais rather expensive for good but simple food.
Sobremesa around 7-14 Reais, I can recommend the puddin!
White wines between 59-120 Reais for me is too much in this kind of resto.
I would come back for the food, but not at this pricelevel anymore.

Having had our fill of meat, we were looking for fish and decided to try Alfala. A bit hard to locate but so glad we did. The cod dishes were delicious, the best cod-fish balls hands down! We have never ever had octopus so tender anywhere else in the world. The owner of the restaurant spoke English and was most gracious and friendly. He even served us complimentary dessert and port wine. The puff pastry flan was out of this world. Servers were attentive and helpful. So delicious we had planned on returning for lunch, unfortunately we ran out of time...... Highly recommend this restaurant!

We had delicious cod dishes, Morue a la Portuguese and Morue a la Petruscada, the cod was tender and delightfully flavored in both dishes. The half size is enough for an individual serving.. Also delicious deserts: Oves Moles de Aviero, and Pastel de Natas (feuilette pastry stuffed with egg-based filling). Our desert choice was greatly assisted by being shown a plate of the desserts rather than relying on the somewhat opaque and simplifying descriptions on the menu. The ambience is interesting and much improved from the old photos on Tripadvisor, there are now painted panels on the walls and ceilings, a tile mural, dark wood tables and table mats of Portuguese design. An Interesting wine list has a few Brazilian but mostly Portuguese wines. The service is attentive, in contrast to some previous reviews we found that the staff and Maitre d' had an adequate understanding of Englieh and were very helpful, for example printing out descriptions of wines including the local portuguese grape varieties.
