It has been some time since my last trip to this traditional "grande dame" of Rio restaurants. It is a "must do" for a high end dining experience while in rio, but don't expect to be blown away by service or food.
On arrival, you are pleasantly greeted with a nice dimly lit dinging area with a soaring ceiling and very nice floral arrangements. the room is a classic, but in need of some updates and maintenance. The coveted tables are in front of the large picture windows that look out onto the pool. One of the most charming views of any restaurant in Rio and really gives you the vibe of tropical-chic Rio de Janeiro of the past. This alone makes the experience worth it.
I also like that the room is divided into two sections and the tables are amply spaced from one another. This adds to the ambience and exclusivity of the experience. We unforturatly had a large table with several young kids near our table. Don't do this…not fair to the kids or the other patrons.
Service was very attentive, but somewhat unprepared. We were told that they had been suffering from extensive turnover in the wait staff, and it showed. Food was ok, not one of the courses were "memorable".
A positive note: the whole reservation process was excellent. We were able to reserve the corner table by the window that we wanted…all by email.
My suggestion: Get dressed up, reserve a window table, order a good wine and enjoy the view and your partner. The food and service aren't so bad that it will ruin the experience...especially if you have the proper expectations.
Have a good time and let my know if this was helpful.
