“Not nice”
Reviewed 13 February 2013

I work for a travel agency, and we had six clients at this hotel in January 2013. They were not satisfied with the hotel, unfriendly staff and dirty rooms in a dodgy neighboorhood. Rio's "Not Nice" Hotel unfortunately...

I read the reviews and wasn't sure however the staff were friendly the room was clean the breakfast was good there is a supermarket just across the street and resturants across the street a hotel is for sleep only the beds were comfortable staff changed them every day. Just be aware of your surroundings I would suggest going with a friend just like any other major city and try to learn a bit of Portuguese before you go all in all I had a great time and the staff helped me any way they could

Room Tip: Learn some Portuguese before you go and try not to be alone in the area at night

I stayed here overnight under emergency circumstances (flight delay). The rooms seemed a run down, but the in room beer was cheap.

Our family stayed there from Jan 17 to 21, 2012. The room is worse than a typical motel, small (extremely), old, noisy and many devices were not functioning. It was in summer but the AC did not work. The AC upstairs was leaking and the water drops made big noise on our window. Their solution was having our window open (push-out type window) so the leaking water drops went out. However, when we slept with the window opened, all the party noise, music and car beeping were clearly heard overnight. In Rio, 12am is just like a start of the crazy Brazilians' night life.

This hotel offers charged pick-up and send-out services. Our suggestion is NEVER use them! They book a guy to pick up us with $60 Brazil Reals. Our flight was from Sao Paulo to Rio. Due to the thunderstorm in Sao Paulo, out flight delayed for four hours, therefore, the driver charged us 4 hours waiting fee plus parking fee, total came to $120 Brazil Reals. In the airport, a safe taxi would charge only $40 - $50 Reals. Much worse than this, the guy sent us to cruise pier dropped us in a terminal where we had to pay $15 US for another taxi to get us to the pier!

The only thing we would give a applause was their complimentary breakfast. It is pleasant and the room is bright and spacious.

My husband and I stayed here during 6/27-7/1/11 during our travel in Rio de Janeiro. Overall, it's a decent low-budget hotel if you are looking to save money and stay close by the trains/attractions- approx. 10 min. to Rue de Gloria or a further walk to Rue de Lapa. The pics on the website totally misrepresents what the actual rooms/bar/pool actually looks like in person. If you want to catch the bus which is a bit trickier to navigate are right down the block. There are tons of cafes, restaurants/bars, and shops that you can walk around the area of your stay. The hotel is run-down, peeling paint, water pressure and leaks causing puddles from toilets and shower area, old furniture, bedding, closets, etc. However, if you can overlook appearance to stay close to the area, then your stay will be just fine. If you are looking for comfort and luxury, then keep searching! We had AC in our room that worked fine. TV has channels in english/portuguese. House keeping does change sheets/towels and clean daily so the rooms are kept tidy. Out of the 2 elevators, only one is available for guests. The other is really for room service/laundry/busboy.The buffet was excellent. The menu changes daily- mostly pao de queijo (brazilian cheese breads, portuguese rolls, suco de abacaxi (pineapple juice), café com leite (coffee with milk), scrambled eggs with ham/cheese, chocolate pudding/pineapple cake/sweets, fruits (melons, watermelon), and quiche. A bit repetitive but a good variety selection for a buffet. Also, the supermarket is right across the street. **On a last note, learn basic/useful phrases in portguese before you book to Rio! Especially in this area, except for hotel staff, the locals in Rio will not be able to communicate in English nor Spanish.** It's not a difficult language which can be easily learned during the duration of your travel. I was very fortunate that my husband is semi-fluent in portuguese. This was particularly useful for directions or when we missed our stop on the train/bus.

Room Tip: Streets can get noisy at night time due to local bars/restaurants in the area particularly on the we...

I stayed at this hotel for 3 days in November 2010. I picked the hotel because it was in the type of neighborhood that i wanted to be in. I really liked the fact that there was everything that i could ever want in a square mile of the hotel. I really enjoyed being able to interact with tons of Brazilians and learn a lot from them. The shower was powerful (always a massage like feel to it), breakfast was WONDERFUL! My bed was a little small, but after walking around Rio for hours everyday, i was not awake long enough for it to be a problem. I would stay at this hotel again, and i really hope the prices are still reasonable.
