“Great location but agree that hotel is a disappointment”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2012

We had requested a renovated room on a higher floor, preferably a corner room. We got a high floor and had side views of the beach and Christ Redeemer statue which was good but the room was very basic with old furniture and furnishings. The room was very cold and took the air-con several hours to adjust. The bedding was two singles pushed together, which wasn't too bad, but the bedding was a sheet and thin cloth. Found 2 half blankets in the cupboard which were only just adequate. Breakfast was very basic and not very good quality. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Hotel is overrated. Value for hotel is relative as Rio accomodation is generally expensive.

Room Tip: Request a high floor and front corner room.

The staff is awesome, the breakfast buffet is to die for, the beds were comfy and I slept well to get up & go enjoy Rio every day we were there! A block from the ocean, wonderful food right on the block as well, taxi stand right on the corner - it's a great central place to stay!

This hotel is well located--facing the beach, right beside Copacabana Palace, and they have internet for a charge in a business center in the basement; but that is it for the positives--the lobby is constantly filled to capacity with 100 bus tour people checking in and checking out; these are the people, in a rush to get on their bus, that you must compete with for your buffet breakfast each morning--and the people upstairs on the roof around the little pool drinking and smoking and drinking and smoking--Would never go back.

I really don't understand the good ratings for this hotel. The hotel is like a lowest tier Holiday Inn. I paid around $300/night in April 2012 for a Superior Room (one level better than the standard room) and requested a recently renovated room on a high floor with ocean views. What I got assigned to was an extremely outdated room on the 6th floor with some ocean view that was mostly blocked by the residential building next door. The room was clean, but the furniture and the textiles look like they haven't been changed since the 70's. There was no comforter on the bed except for sheets and a thin, white blanket (actually more like a big piece of cloth). What seemed like the missing comforter was later found inside the bottom of the musty closet. It wasn't something I wanted to use. Who knows how clean it is and how long it's been in there?

What made me really upset was that the pictures used to show the deluxe room on the hotel booking sites were of a more modern looking room. I booked the hotel specifically because the rooms were portrayed to be renovated. It clearly wasn't the case. Some of my other colleagues who booked standard rooms were assigned to glorified closets. Out of the 20+ rooms on each floor, only about 4 directly face the ocean and a handful have side views.

To add on to my distaste for the hotel, I requested late check-out after hearing that one of my colleagues was able to get it. The front desk guy wouldn't offer it to me though because it was already offered to one of my colleagues. That made me mad again. I paid for a separate room and we both had different plans.

The only redeeming qualities were the beach-side location, complimentary beach service, and the free breakfast. However, none of these are enough to make me want to come back here nor recommend it to others. I had colleagues that stayed at Porto Bay for a cheaper rate and their room was updated and had a balcony with beach and Christ the Redeemer views.

Room Tip: Rooms that end in 2 are tiny

The Windsor Excelsior is located right in the middle of Copacabana beach on Avenida Atlantica, about 30 to 45 minutes walking distance to Ipanema. Our room did not have an ocean view but it was clean, spacious and modern and had hardwood floors. The breakfast buffet was included and was excellent - great selection of hot items and delicious fresh juices and fruits. We also saw that the hotel includes an airport shuttle to GIG which is a great bonus because a taxi fare to/from GIG is around $50 USD, but we found the shuttle had limited availability. You either need to book at least a few days in advance online to have the best chance of getting a time that works for you, or speak with the front desk sometime between around 9 am - 4 pm and they can call for you. Overall the hotel staff were very helpful (most spoke English). The rooftop pool is small but a nice place to have a drink or lunch and there's a great view of Copacabana, Sugar Loaf, and the Christ statue. The hotel also offers free umbrellas, towels and chairs on the beach in an area in front of the hotel location. If you want to move to a different location on the beach, don't sweat it - you'll just have to rent chair/umbrella from one of the many beach vendors for around $5 to $15. The Windsor will let you take the beach towels wherever you want.

We stayed here for two nights in March 2012 and were extremely impressed. Initally we had been booked into another Windsor hotel but were upgraded here because the other hotel was overbooked. At check in I asked for a sea room view, but they were all taken - but we were given an excellent room on the 12th floor, from which you can see Copacabana. The hotel has a small bar on the top floor, with an outdoor pool, gym, steam room & sauna, although drinks are expensive. The breakfast buffet was extensive, with lots of variety. Right opposite the hotel in a nice little Italian restaraunt which we ate in twice. Its reasonablly priced for Rio and serves great, home made food. One road away from the hotel is a 'main' road with lots of shops, banks and buses. The beach also provide towels and chairs on the beach. OVerall, highly recomend this hotel for the price.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room at check in, but we were on the 12th (not sea facing) but you can see the be...
