The LightHouse
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Generally, I am not a fan of staying in hostels. But the staff at the light house is excellent, and they made the stay there very pleasant. The hostess, Sylvia, gave us a map and told us some excellent spots to eat, including Carretao, which is near by and delicious. It is a nice spot to relax during the day, and its about 3 blocks from the beach. Breakfast was served in the morning, and the internet use was reliable and secure. The only drawback was the bunk beds were covered in a plastic and it got very uncomfortable on the warmer nights. Other then that, if you are in the market for a hostel on ipanema beach, I can't imagine you could make a better choice.

Perfect location in a safe courtyard and close to the beautiful Ipanema beach, lagoon, shops, and restaurants. The hostel is kept clean and breakfast is lovely, with a good selection of fresh fruit. All of the staff are friendly and helpful, making our Rio experience one of the best of our SA trip. We stayed here both before and during "Carnaval 2014" and loved every minute! Thank you to Sylvia and Marco for having us to stay and for cuddles with Songa!

Great hostel even though it is small it has a really good vibe. The owner Sylvia is awesome and we were sad to leave!! In a good area in Ipanema, lots of restaurants and bars near by as well as good shopping. Only a short walk to Ipanema beach. Very safe and clean hostel. Thank you Sylvia, we loved our stay at your hostel!

Good location - just a block away from the main street and a couple more from the beach. The double room was o.k., just the shared bathrooms are a bit dirty and smelly. Bit expensive though, but we suppose Rio just is expensive. However, staff were great and helpful. Lots of other hostels in the same area so it feels relatively safe.

The staff of this place is incredibly nice (and funny) e-mails before arrival, making the rules for checkin less irritating (cancellation is 24 hours but if you arrive 2 hours later than the estimated times you usually will lose your bed). They are also very helpfull and friendly once you're there.

And at the average rate (as displayed on their website) is good for what you get in Rio: a relatively quiet alley with some hostels, a dormbed with a place to hang your wet towel and an average shower. (Not that you are only allowed to put on the airco between 10 and 12 pm) and that the fan is not really sufficient for warm Rio). Also, paying for using the WiFi or for using the computers is sooooooo not 2013...

But once there is an opportunity to increase the prices for some sort of event, they will do so and that made no sense in my case. Because of the Confederation Cup (soccer) they increased the price to 140 Rs per night. And since the other hostels in the same alley didnt do so and the hostel wasnt fully occupied during those nights, it really made no sense. I mentioned it to the staff and they understood, but couldnt do anything about it, so I cancelled my last two nights and stayed in a very nice hostel afterwards, for only 55 Rs per night (also dorm) with free WiFi and breakfast.

So, if you are looking for a nice hostel at a good rate, just try one of the other hostels in the same alley or other ones in Ipanema, because this one is ok, but not making up for the peak-season-prices. (Again, the staff is great and they deserve to get paid well, but I think that's not where tehe money goes).

PS The check-in-form also has some nice messages, like: you're not allowed to have sex in the showers. I couldn't find how two people would fit in there, but maybe you want to give it a try, just the be naughty ;) )

First time staying in a hostel, and it was a great experience. Lighthouse is located off of a small side "street/ally" behind a newspaper stand (it blocks the view of the gate entrance if you're in a cab), all the way at the end on the left. Many hostels are located in that little hostel alleyway. From when I first booked, Karina sent me an email welcoming me and she maintained her hospitality throughout (so friendly with her "Hi Honey!" and "What do you need honey?"). It's a small hostel (8 beds and 1 private double) so you get to know people who are staying with you pretty quickly. Everyone was pretty friendly, and the staff really was very informative, always there the answer questions and give their insight. They provide some good tours through a third party provider (I highly recommend the city tour that goes to the Christ statue, Sugar loaf, Cathedral, Stairway, etc). The staff is very down to earth and it seems like they genuinely want you to fully enjoy your stay while you are there and will help you in any way they can. Overall a really good vibe here.

Location is solid, 3 blocks away from the beach, and lots of restaurants and bars near by. Close to transportation as well. Public bus system can seem to be overwhelming, but you get used to it after you try it once. Otherwise just take a taxi, they are everywhere.

The room is a bit small and beds squeak when you move around (especially on the top bunks), but you're only paying about $30USD in Rio and getting so much more, so why complain? Room can get a bit humid with all the towels hanging there, but you have an AC and a fan if you need it. Plenty of lockers for valuables (bring your own padlock). Couches downstairs have thin cushioning, but it's not really an issue. Bathrooms have hot water, I suggest use the one downstairs, it's roomier. They are cleaned pretty often. Breakfast is provided in the morning, just basic fruit with bread/ham/cheese and a George Foreman grilling machine so you can grill your breakfast sandwich if you want. Coffee and purified/spring water is available at all times. Beer/soda/etc from the fridge is $3, honor system on the payment (you mark your name on the fridge). Wifi is however charged, but it's only 5 real total for the duration of your stay (on multiple devices if you have a laptop and a phone for example) so not too much of an excess charge at all.

Overall I would definitely recommend to friends who are looking for a place to stay. It's a very homely feel with a very welcoming staff, and the people who roll through there seem to be pretty decent and friendly. Decent facilities, and solid location at a fair price. Couldn't ask for much more...

We booked after reading all the great reviews but I was initially disappointed and thought about leaving. We arrived after dark so that didn't help but the sheets/towels were thin and stained (although freshly laundered) and the bathroom was grotty with a small shower cubicle and toilet for the whole floor (10 people- another one downstairs by the kitchen). The door handle on our room kept falling off and the shelves were covered in dust. It was the most expensive hostel on our travels through Arg/Brazil so I was expecting better.

However, in the bright light of day, it was v close to the beach/restaurants. Ipanema is a v nice area and I can imagine that rent for property is v high. The staff were lovely and v helpful, knew all about buses, areas to go/avoid etc. The wifi is not free (5 R for password) but generally quite quick (when it wasn't kicking me off). The guests all were nice and I would imagine that if you were travelling alone it would be a good place to,meet people and relax.
Also note that the metro is not currently going to Ipanema as they are working on the line so you need to get the replacement bus to copacobana first.
