First of all: if the villa would have been the only place I had stayed in Rio I might have rated it higher but having the comparison to other B&Bs I have to say it is just average. Nothing more or less!

After arriving at Rua Laurinda Santos Lobo in Santa Teresa we were greeted by a lovely architecture with an old world charm from the 1920's. Matching the outside the interior is reduced and underlines the vintage ambiance.
Nevertheless, I was quite astonished running into linens and towels that apparently saw better times and some run down furniture. That left the impression to stay at a place where they try to make fast money without any concessions to their guests.
Another point underlining my impression was next morning’s breakfast. Despite the fact that the tables were full with leftovers from the other guests there was hardly anything left at the buffet for us. After sitting there for 15 minutes we had to ask for refills since no one of the staff paid attention.

Since decoration is not everything and B&B's are living from the owners' commitment and passion the innkeepers should think of some improvements. First of all I would encourage the whole staff (not only the two managers) to be friendly to the guests even if they do not speak the same language. A smile sometimes opens doors!
Furthermore I highly recommend the innkeepers to stay in other B&Bs to experience what kind of personality and service is missing at their place.

Overall my stay was ok since we had the only room off the main tract, where all other rooms seem to be located. Furthermore we were able to store our luggage for the day and could shower before leaving to the airport but I might recommend other places to friends and followers.

Important facts to know when staying here:
The villa is located in the domestic airport’s entry lane. There are some bats that are living in the garden, flying low (!) and many dogs in the neighborhood that bark with every little movement.
And finally it is difficult to get a taxi during night! There is a taxi stand close by but as soon it is getting dark the cabs are gone same applies to the police. It seems that they are afraid of getting in trouble with activities in the close by favela although this part of Santa Teresa is known to be safe. I am not sure about the reason but I was surprised how easy you can get around at Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon and how difficult it was in Santa Teresa during night!

+ Lovely architecture,
- outworn lines and towels,
- inattentive staff

Villa Laurinda, is a little paradise. The host were very welcoming ! We have truly felt we were at some one's home. The breakfast was wonderful! We were in Rio for work. How nice to jump in the pool at 8am and be at work in Centro by 10! Santa Teresa has not lost it's charm yet.

Really nice building and the room itself had a superb, spacious bathroon. The hosts were very welcoming, and the breakfasts were served to me and my wife individually as oppossed to buffet style which I thought was really good.

The location is just outside of Santa Teresa's main centre which was good as it was relatively quiet (5 minute walk to the centre).

The only downside is that the neighbourhood tends to have a lot of noisy dogs who don't tend to sleep so these kept us awake at night, and we were situated in a room right next to the reception so if people do come back late then chances are they will wake you up!

Lovely characterful building, very high ceilings (with fan), shutters keep out heat, but not mosquitoes. Huge built-in wardrobe needed airing; whole room did. Very relaxed staff, helpful service. Ample breakfasts a good start to the day. Monkeys swinging off the roof into the trees the last morning! Pool refreshing (I watched). Wide, firm, comfortable bed. Wifi a blessing, as was A4 map. Good plumbing. Quiet, even builders working on new wing. Dogs the loudest neighbourhood noise, a bit of partying one night. Santa Teresa is lovely; take the 14 bus up and down; tram was being renovated. Better than taxis, cheaper too. Saturday night street market lively. Sobrenatural and Bar do Mineiro favourites. Ferry to Niteroi scenic, especially coming back at sunset. Will certainly be back!

Room Tip: We had the Imperio, corner room at front (right hand side of second picture): not noisy, and light from two sides, garden and road. Plentiful shower too!

Villa Laurinda stands out among all places to stay at in Rio. Virtually nobody, tourist or resident, stays at a place with a garden at all, at what a nice place Villa Laurinda is in this respect, but not only.

As a Carioca friend of mine states it: The marvellous thing in Rio is not the beach, it is the forrest! And that is what you have at Villa Laurinda, but you are right in the middle of the city, and in the nicest quarter at the same time.. Be awakend by the birds, see the little monkeys jumping around in the trees while you have breakfast, inhale the wonderful smell of the jasmine at night while sitting by the pool and watching the bats flying around and take a sip of water from the pool. Take a swim in a private environment, or visit the bars and restaurants nearby, walk down to the Lapa at night for going out... The list is endless.

I have had the pleasure of staying here many times, and it would have always been wonderful, even if I had had to do without the familiar environment, the friendly service, and the gentle people who make this place even more marvellous than it already is anyway.

Highly recommended!
