“Great hotel for the cost with amazing rooftop views”
Reviewed 13 May 2014 via mobile

The Arena has basic rooms with nice bathrooms. The breakfast is nice and the restaurant and bar area is more than adequate. If you want luxury then pay more and stay at the palace. The arena offers a great central location and the rooftop bar/ pool area is lovely. We found it hard to find any restaurants that offered good food. We ended up getting pasta type meals from one of the many kiosk eateries dotted along the beach. The one directly across from arena was the best in my opinion. We stayed at the arena after staying in the palace for 4 nights. Worth considering the arena if your trying to keep the costs down a little whilst still maintaining a good standard. Side view rooms offer a nice view and if you look back you can see the statue.

Excellent location. Great view. Very nice breakfast.

Average room (3 star North America Std). Out-dated lobby (esp. chairs and couches-ripped and sunken and faded).

Warning:

I had 4 postcards given to the receptionist for international mailing on January 14, 2014 early afternoon. It was 4 Real each postcard for them to get stamps and mail out at the post office about 2 blocks away. I gave 20 Real which includes 4 Real tip! He had a big smile and seemed very nice and accommodating. It's been almost 4 month now. Not one postcard showed up!

I had 1 postcard given to the receptionist on January 15, 2014 morning. I gave 10 Real and the receptionist refused the tip which I thought was strange. In fact, he seemed a bit offended by it. This person checked us in when we arrived as well and was never really nice (absolutely no smile what so ever and kind of attitude-ish tone of voice). However! my post card arrived.

Since it's hard to figure out who to trust with your post card mailing, just forget it unless maybe you can locate that mean attitude-ish receptionist! Hey, he wasn't nice but he did the job honestly!

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for the direct ocean view. It's worth it!

Dear guest,
Thank you very much for your comments at Trip Advisor.
The guest impression is very important to us in order to allow
corrections in our service.
Unfortunately we cannot find out why the post cards did not reach
the address informed.
The person in charge of send post cards to the mail is the same
for years and we do not received up to date complaints
on this issue. However we will implement a better system on the front desk
to assure the proper mailing procedure.
We are sorry for the inconvenient.
Sincerely

We stayed here for about 10 days. The hotel is very clean. One of the newer hotels in Copacabana, which is a big plus. Location is excellent. The front desk staff was great, very accommodating. Everyone spoke English, which was convenient. The breakfast is a highlight of the hotel - the food is quite good and is at least somewhat traditional, I am told. Housekeeping did a great job on our room every day (we always left a tip each day of our stay) but beware, things are a bit different. They are stingy with the towels, presumably to reduce laundry. We had an ocean view room, which I would recommend to anyone. Don't stay at Arena Copacabana without upgrading to an ocean view room. I understand the interior views are not good. You see concrete wall.

Our only complaints with Arena were the wifi and the bellhop service. As for the latter, when we arrived we were barely out of the cab when we were snubbed by the bellhops. One swore in Portuguese about our suitcase, as if it were too big. It weighed under 60 lbs - my wife could move it - and regardless, not a great way to welcome guests. As if that weren't enough, the man who moved our bags upstairs was curt, snippy and ridiculously impatient with us (for not realizing you need to use the key to turn on the room lights). My wife gave him R$5, he snatched it from her without without so much as a thank you or smile and disappeared. The rest of our stay, he ignored us. Other bellhops were OK, but one or two seemed bitter toward us. For a hotel with a good reputation for service, the attitude came as a big surprise. In any case the management needs to immediately address the attitude problem with a few of the bellhops. As for wifi, it should be standard inclusion in each room at these prices.

Overall, a GREAT stay. We will return before our visas expire and I see no reason not to go back to Arena.

Room Tip: Other observations/tips/thoughts: Be careful with the water in Rio, it could mess up your digestive...

My husband and I stayed here for a week in April 2014. The location was very convenient to the beach and within walking distance to restaurants and metro station. It was great to have breakfast included and we were pleased with the selection.

The front desk staff were very helpful with directions to area attractions and making reservations. At the end of our trip my husband had a mishap and the front desk staff gave us directions to a nearby doctor and were so kind and seemed to genuinely care about how he was doing when I returned to collect things later.

Room Tip: Beach view is worth it.

We stayed here for four days. Amazing location and views from the roof (and from the corner rooms). Comfy bed / clean rooms. Service on a par with others in Rio, nothing spectacular.
Positives - location / views
Negatives - not much local help from reception, expensive wifi ($12/day!!)

We enjoyed our stay at Arena. The location is right on Copacabana Beach and our room was large, clean and spacious. The free breakfasts have a good range of different foods (although if you are from a Western country - we're from Australia - be prepared for lots of cheeses and a weird take on breakfast foods typical of South America).

Because it's right on a main road, I did find the room to be a bit noisy from traffic. Noise from trucks etc woke me up a couple of times during the night on more than one occasion - but I don't think there would be any escaping that at any hotel along that strip.

There is a teeny tiny little pool on the top floor. It is NOT heated so it's frosty. I only used it once. If it was a really hot day I expect it'd be refreshing.

We did have some problems with our room. Firstly, our room key hardly ever worked properly. We had to keep asking for it to be re-coded. If you put the room key anywhere near a mobile phone or another credit card it will scramble it. Then our safe wouldn't open - the batteries on it died. To the staff's credit, it was fixed within about 30 minutes. The day after this happened, the batteries on the card entry to our room died. We couldn't get into our room for the umpteenth time. This meant the batteries on the lock on the door had to be changed which was done within about 30 minutes. This was not ideal after a long day out sightseeing.

The staff were ok... It's a busy hotel so the staff are clearly under a lot of pressure. You don't get the sort of service that you'd expect from a hotel of this sort, but they weren't rude or anything. Just a bit cold and dismissive when they are busy. English isn't a problem there though.

I'm sure anyone booking this hotel would find it to be fine. It's not amazing or anything but the location is definitely its advantage. Would I stay there again...? Probably not.

We stayed for 5 nights in April. When we checked in we got a room on the 4th floor that had a large amount of mould on the ceiling. We stayed in the room for one night (we had just flown 30 hours!) but requested a new room the next day. The staff were very helpful and we were given a much cleaner one on the 13th floor - what an amazing view! The hotel location is great and close to everything you need. The pool area is quite small but you hardly need it with the beach right outside. Overall, a very enjoyable stay.
