“Average hostel, lacking in atmosphere”
Reviewed 29 January 2014

We stayed here for 5 nights in a private room but unfortunately didn't enjoy our stay which was mainly due to the lack of any type of atmosphere.

Pros:
Clean room and clean kitchen area. Bathrooms also cleaned regularly
Air con
Staff friendly enough

Cons:
No alcohol allowed to be bought in but you can buy their overpriced alcohol
Both got badly bitten every night, couldn't have windows open
Showers rarely warm no matter what time of day
Breakfast not brilliant, little choice
Guests seemed to be holidaying rather than backpackers
Whilst it's ultimately due to the guests that the atmosphere was lacking, I can't give the place more than 3 stars as the atmosphere was the main reason we didn't enjoy our time here
Whilst it is close to the Lagoon, it isn't close to any of the amenities such as bars and restaurants. You'd be better off in Ipanema.

I arrived in Rio and this place made it feel like a home away from home. The staff were so friendly and happy to provide you with heaps of info on stuff to do around Rio and the local area. As an independent traveller this place felt safe and the dorm rooms were nice and clean. I would definitely stay again!

I've stayed in all sorts of places around the world and this was on the more grim side and can't unrest and it's 4.5* rating.

The good points: Paul the English guy who works there. Really helpful and friendly. Decent breakfast, nice lounge area, good wifi and safe neighbourhood.

Bad points: the single persons room is woeful, dirty and tiny. The bathrooms are cleaned once a day and are quickly dirty again. Often no hot water in middle of day. Despite the notices telling guests not to and the 24 hour staff presence I was woken up at 1am on my last night by a guy playing guitar and singing in the common room and a group of girls screaming and shouting along with him. I shouted that I was tying to sleep but they just carried on. Very worst of all is the fact you have to put all toilet paler in a bin and not the toilet. This repulsed me. The bin was often close to overflowing by evening. Thinking about it now turns my stomach!

The staff at reception and the owner -Fabio, were really accommodating and helpful (ie. giving directions to different places, providing recommendations for cool places to visit nearby, etc.). The location has its pros and cons: it's far from the subway line so you need to either take a bus everywhere or walk, which could take a while. The good thing is that the hostel is 200m from the lagoon, which is a great place for a morning run or bike ride. Further, it's in a safe area of the city. Overall, the hostel was clean, breakfast was included, and we enjoyed out stay. It's definitely not a party hostel, as it seems to attract all sorts of guests (families, businesspeople, backpackers, etc.) but it was easy to meet people in the quaint lounge area.

I took a group of 13 young people to Rio for World Youth Day and we spent 3 fantastic nights at this hostel. Fabio the owner could not have been more helpful and went out of his way when one of our group became ill.The hostel has a cracking lounge and kitchen area and it really felt like a home from home. Thanks again Fabio!

Friendly and very professional staff. Location either for business or vacationing is very convenient.
Breakfast atmosphere is amiable. A kitchen available all day I've seen is very convenient to large groups.
Pick up service it was always on time and relaxed, no hassle with Rio Taxis.

Room Tip: Find out where the bath rooms are located.

I stayed here with two other friends in June for a few days and we loved it! The staff were so friendly and nice and spoke English which was a great relief because we did not speak any Portguese. We were made to feel right at home and given loads of great advice about Rio. They helped us book our transfers to Ilha Grande and stored our luggage while we were away which was very helpful. The common area is a great space to chill out and meet other guests. We met some really really nice people at this guest house and would definitely go back!
