There's a lot to love about Rio, but none more than the Zbra hostel!! There is something very special going on in this place and I am happy to have had the chance to enjoy a taste of it. Starting with Roberta's warm (catlike) welcome into the hostel, to Ryan's (charming) introduction to the nightlife, Zbra provides the perfect base to launch your Rio adventure! Kev D

I am 4 hours into my weekend stay and I'm already writing this place up as the worst place that the wallpaper guide has ever recommended. It was not for us. We wanted a weekend in Rio and wanted to be close to the good food in Leblon. We did not want to be staying in a place full of drunk 20 year olds. (If you are a party going 20 year old you will LOVE this place).

The room was tiny tiny. The bed barely big enough for two. But we knew that.

We didn't know we would get crappy towels and no soap or shampoo. We didn't know that the room would feel dark and damp and dirty. And, we didn't know about the wild partying that would happen outside my door at 1am.

Ugh. I love a drink. At the pub. Not in the tiny hallway of a tiny hotel. When I called reception to ask if the partying was likely to continue, she laughed at me. Awesome. Really regretting this whole thing.

But, I blame the Wallpaper Guide entirely. It is usually spot on. But this time it was so absolutely wrong.

Are you 18-25 and like to get wasted and chat about awesome travel adventures? You will love this place.

Are you older than 25 and have grown tired of telling competing backpacker stories with douchelords? Not your place.

My friend and I had a private room with 2 twin beds, a sink, and we had to share the bathroom with other girls. The concept of the hostel is for travelers who want to see Rio and who want to meet people since day one. The staff is SO HELPFUL. They found bus companies, prices, and schedules to go from Rio to Sao Paulo. Also, they speak perfect English, Spanish, and Portuguese obviously. The only down side was that you needed to use the bathrooms either in the middle of the day or late at night because in the morning bathrooms were always busy. One last thing, even though they do not offer 24-hr concierge service, there is always someone at the front who is just taking care of the place at night. Location is in Leblon, the nicest neighborhood in Rio, like 2 blocks away from the beach, maybe 8 blocks away from shopping mall, and if you don't want to walk you can always take the bus which is also very safe. If I go back to Rio, I'm staying at Zbra again! I loved it!

Room Tip: Choose the private one with sharing a bathroom. For the price, it's worth it. Don't spend to...

The location is just perfect: you're in the heart of Leblon, surrounded by many nice restaurants and bars. Public transport is also very easy to use. Friendly staff and amazing decoration! Stayed in a private room with shared bathroom, so payed a lot more than usual for a hostel (but still a lot cheaper than many budget hotels in Rio!). A bit noisy, though.

Although the place has an amazing location in Leblon, next to the club Melt, Veloso bar and one block from the beach, they lack cleaness. Ok, is a new hostel, cool deco, but to find out flecks over your pillow and also receive the new line with small holes was not exactly what I was expecting. The air conditioning is very cold. The bunks are triple, so it can be very crowdy and noisy if you are travelling solo. The internet is free but they only have two computers, rather bring your own. The lounge is big enough, but there is not much security as is mostly open for the street the bar, without any walls or privacy at all as any people of walking at the sidewalk could go inside. The showers were a bit confusing as they could be used by girls or boys, Some of the cabins lacked trashbins, others toilet papers. They lacked also info about shuttles or how to go the airport. Was good to know, but I didnt like so much to stay there again.

Z.bra hostel has LOADS going for it.

Modern, funky decor. Comfy beds. Fantastic lockers (large one per bed and small one in each bed). Fab brekkie. Really nice staff. Great location. Good bar. Free WiFi.

Things missing: good info, maps etc (although staff are really lovely it doesn't come across as part of their job)

Can be VERY noisey at times, parties are encouraged by staff (no problem) but sometimes felt like a bar with rooms as opposed to a hostel with a bar.

No kitchen

Would recommend this hostel most definitely.

Whoever had an idea to snag a spot a block away from beautiful posto 12 and Veloso was a genius. It really doesn't get more central than this, ideal location for everyone but especially for the first time Rio visitors who want to be close to the best spots in Leblon and Ipanema. Once again, this place does not look like a hostel but more like a boutique hotel which just happened to have a few extra beds in the room. The design is very modern and efficient - each room has a few "bunk" bed which are sufficiently equipped with a small locker, shelf, phone charger (larger, suitacase lockers are located next to the bed). Granted, the rooms with triple "bunks" can get a bit crowded on the busy day but once again, being this close to the beach, very few people spend much time at the Z.bra. Staff is friendly and helpful, common area is large enough to accomodate quite a few people, outside area is normally half empty and you certainly dont feel squeezed.... and the only 2 things I wasnt crazy about were - only 2 computers with internet access (virtually impossible to get to) and, at times, not-so-perfectly clean bathroom/showers. I've stayed at Z.bra a few times and would definitely recommend it to all the Rio visitors
