“Can't recommend enough”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

There are several different ways of visiting the Favelas. Personally I find jeep tours quite repulsive. Disturbing residents and penetrating to their living space for some quick photo opps as you were in a zoo….this is not the way how good-hearted and responsible people should act…
If you want to be a good tourist please visit a favela ON FOOT with a local who lives there. In this way you can be sure that your money is put back directly into the community and you will learn a lot about the favela and the residents. A unique experience for sure.
For those who have concerns about safety. Who else could secure your safety better then a well-known local who belongs to the community?
After studying many websites offering different kind of tours and reading several reviews from other travelers it was doubtless that we would like to visit Rocinha with Favelatour.org.
I sent a mail to Zezinho prior to our South American trip. We chose the tour type and agreed the date and time of our visit. Our guide was Dembore who speaks fluent English as he lived in the States for 6 years.
We met him and 3 other tourists at Copacabana in front of a pet store and traveled to Rocinha by a local bus. At the time of our visit the workers were on strike at the public transport company so it took us more than an hour to get to Rocinha. There we used a minivan operated by Rocinha’s community to get to the top. Upon arrival we have visited a viewpoint then started our descent towards the bottom.
During our trip Dembore kept talking about Rocinha’s history and residents, the life at present and local laws ruling their everyday life. We stopped several times for receiving further explanations, interesting details or having a quick chat with locals. We have also visited Favela Adventures DJ School Spin Rocinha. It was nice to meet Zezinho and his cats in person.
Finally we were taken to a local restaurant for lunch. Unfortunately we were in a hurry so could not stay any longer with our group.
It was a very interesting and informative tour. D is a nice and knowledgeable guy willingly answered all our questions. One of the highlights in Rio.

“You're truly invited!”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

I believe that an invitation from a resident, along with ethical benefits for the community, equals a full hearted invitation. So, we were me, ( a gran), a 4 year-old and her parents who decided to do the tour. The half day tour was guided by an inspirational student, Victoria, who lived with, and advocated for her community, Rocinha.
The barriers to education, employment and secure housing were explained, but the vibrancy, community spirit and optimism shone through the poor urban conditions. The contrast with Fashion Mall was extreme. From high-end clothes at the mall to rubbish bags spilling out of an open skip onto the street.
Victoria included us in her familiar life, so that we saw the box where the post is kept on trust, for nearby residents, as there are no numbers or real street addresses. We greeted some folk, and glided through tricky Dickensian alleys. Improved conditions are surely needed and travellers like us can witness the urgency for beneficial changes. Victoria personifies the lovely people who deserve a chance for good health and fulfillment.

“Only real way to experience the Rocinha favela”
Reviewed 29 May 2014 via mobile

Our tour with Dembore was a really cool experience. The favela experience they share with you is the only way you should do it. They are a great bunch of guys who truly love where they live. Their DJ school and investment in the community really drew us to go with them and we were glad we did. Cheers guys.

“Must see in Rio”
Reviewed 22 April 2014 via mobile

I strongly recommend favela tour with these guys. They will fanatically tell you all the features of places where they live and will show the most picturesque places. The feeling of absolute safety didn't abandon us for a second. Thanx a lot our guide Eric!!!
P.s. Too much information about dj-school...

“A must-do for Rio!”
Reviewed 29 March 2014

This tour provided a wealth of information about the favela. Our guide Dembore was insightful and very willing to accommodate the needs of our 3 year old child. Doing this tour with a toddler turned out to be no problem although I would recommend using a backpack (not a stroller!). I admired the tour company's dedication to their community. How fabulous to learn about the favela from people who actually live there!
