Rio de Janeiro is a very expensive city to find lodging at the right price, specially if you don't book way in advance. That being said, Hotel Venezuela was a good option in terms of location, since it's halfway between downtown and the south zone (Copacabana, Ipanema...) in a small quiet street in the neighborhood of Flamengo. Bus stops and a subway station are nearby, although subway in Rio doesn't take you to many places. Some nice bars and restaurants were nearby.
Now, in regards to the hotel itself, there's nothing much else to say after reading the previous reviews: rooms are very small, bathroom is tight, breakfast is basic and served in a very small room so people many times have to wait for their turn to be able to sit and eat. People in the reception are eager to offer you paid services even when you're just asking what bus to take to go somewhere.
By the way, I am Brazilian and there were foreigners staying in the hotel as well. I've witnessed many times foreign people trying to communicate with the morning reception lady unsuccessfuly since she had absolutely no English knowledge (that ridiculous scene where the person starts speaking louder to be understood was common). So this is not a good option if you can't speak or understand some Portuguese.
