We stayed at Casalegre in January for four nights and loved everything about it. Perfect location and the hosts gave us so many great recommendations (restaurants, shops etc.) and helped us organizing.
We felt very confortable and welcome. I would recommend it to anybody looking for more than just a hotel bed...

Casalegre has the best staff at any posada/hostel/nospedage I've ever been to. Each staff greeted us so warmly.... Huge smiles and everyone would run over to introduce themselves as soon as they saw someone new had appeared. Not only were they completely knowledgable about Rio, and Santa Teresa, but they WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY to inform us about what special things were going on locally during the time we were in Rio. without us even asking, they invited us to go to, on two separate evenings, carnaval samba practices WITH THEM. They didn't just take us and drop is off, either... We danced together, ate together, and got to know each other. They're really special people, and it made our stay really special. The house itself is lovely... Local art all over the place including beautiful murals painted on the walls. It's well-situated... Just a couple of steps from a cafe and a lovely restaurant/bar. The breakfast was plentiful and the coffee strong. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The only thing to be a aware of is that there is no air conditioning, but the fans in the room are very effective. Marco, Reana, Laura, Daniel, Rafael, you were WONDERFUL and we'll be back someday! Beijos!

A beautiful colorful artsy haven in Santa Teresa, that feels more like a communal artist house than a hotel. We stayed in Santa Teresa before, and loved it. We did the Cama e Café (bed & breakfast in someone’s home) and it was okay, so this time we did more research and found Casalegre. The moment we arrived, we felt like we were at home. We loved the open airy courtyard with liter soda bottles housing plants on the walls. Hosts Daniel and Marco were so cool and welcoming, treating us like old friends. We had reserved the DADO OLIVIERA room, which was small but perfectly charming. Since it was our honeymoon and low-season they offered us the JADE MASCARENHAS apartment for the same price, with a living room, kitchenette, separate bedroom, and a terrace with a hammock. We could see monkeys running on the telephone wires. My only criticism is the bathroom was small and the shower pressure very low and water temperature tricky to adjust between too hot or too cold. The breakfast buffet was delicious with lots of organic options. Daniel gave us great restaurant suggestions and advice for going out in Lapa. As artists, we love the thought and intention behind the creation of Casa Legre, that each room is named after a Brazilian artist, and the décor is mostly local art and costumes salvaged from Carnaval. They have a little gift shop that sells handcrafted artsy things. We bought a couple of T-shirts, and when we left they gave us a piece of original art we said we liked. Love this place! If we come back for Carnaval we would definitely stay here again.

We stayed for only one night but had an incredible experience at Casalegre. The owners were BEYOND helpful and spent so much time explaining to us how to get around, enjoy the area and many other useful tips. We met great people just hanging around in the courtyard and fell in love with Santa Teresa. I would recommend this charming arty B&B to anyone looking to see a more funky side of Rio. Comfortable, affordable, warm and charming. Top Notch choice!

Casa Alegre - the name says it all:
a place to feel at home in bustling Rio. You'll find peace and quiet, and at the same time a vivid, joy- and colourful environment created by humorous and caring people!
I love how every room has its own vibe and if it wasn't for the great breakfast - fresh fruit, cereals, tasty bread and cheese, homemade pao de queijo or cake ... - would have hardly left my room ... :)
But not only breakfast was waiting; before all the guests head out to explore Rio the reception and the courtyard, where breakfast is served, seem to turn into a tourist information office. The staff is super helpful when it comes to planning your day in or outside Rio!
The only thing I didn't like about Casa Alegre was leaving it... but I solved this problem by returning a second time...
Obrigadão!!
Yvonne

a Rio-based collegue recommended Casalegre to us, we booked the biggest room (rather a suite) at an amazing rate, had even to prolong our stay before arriving, which was easily done by email. Before leaving home we got another email offering us airport transfer, and when we arrived at Casalegre, we felt most heartely wolcome like coming to some close friends.
So we stayed in Santa Teresa for 4 nights just the time before Christmas - and were very happy. We didn't need AC as we felt safe enough to let the window open during the night, we enjoyed the breakfast in the patio, meeting the staff and other guests and getting their infos about what to do and where to eat in Rio.
The only (little) difficulty was to tell a taxi driver - lets say in the Copacabana area - where to go, because he would not know Casalegre. And telling "Rua Monte Alegre" brought us to a hotel called "Monte Alegre", which is at the very beginning of the street and quite a detour. After the 3. time I had the idea to ask the taxidriver to bring us to "Bar do Gomez", which is an very nice, lively place just next corner from Casalegre. And that worked perfectly!
