“A Great Guide Makes This Tour”

The group I travel with consists of "tour junkies". We have enjoyed tours of a wide variety of places and attractions. We all agree that a good tour guide is the key to our experience on a tour. Isabell is very engaging, very knowledgeable and is part of the communities she is describing during the tour. Though the favelas on this tour are visually stunning, the information provided by Isabell is what you will remember.

“Best part of our Rio trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2014

Isabell has so much insight and info to share and the views from favela are amazing! Also the favela visit itself was the most interesting part of the whole Rio! And so beautiful in its sad glory! I warmly recommend everyone to visit favela while in Rio and with Isabell even Westerns get a lot out if it! You've seen no Rio if you have mut visited favela (and safely like within this tour)!

“Excellent tour of Cantagalo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2014 via mobile

Isabell provided us with many information about Cantagalo's history and the problems the locals faced in the past, present and the near future. The exhaustive tour took us through every part of the favela with lots of facts and a lively conversation between the three of us. Our posuada (hostel) was located in Cantagalo as well, but it was only after the tour we could make sense of the graffiti at our entrance gate. Highly recommended!

“Most Interesting Part of Rio Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 December 2013

Isabell gave my friend and me a great tour of the favela. At first, I was a little apprehensive about just strolling into what at one time had a reputation as a dangerous, lawless slum. But uneasiness quickly gave way to curiosity and interest as we passed through the small streets and alleyways, while Isabell would say hello to various residents and where we just became part of the microcosm.
A good portion of the approximately 4 hours of the tour was viewing and hearing stories about the artwork (graffiti-like murals) throughout the complex, which was very interesting, but which I did not expect. However, Isabell was able to answer most any question regarding the favela, no matter the subject.
Isabell is a native of Germany, but now lives in a favela adjacent to Cantagalo, so has first-hand knowledge of the inter-workings, hardships, dangers and politics of the favelas. Admittedly, she had a bias toward the residents, and how they had been wronged in the past and how it continues today to an extent. But in expressing her opinions, she gives her experiences. She speaks excellent English (and a number of other languages I believe).
Bottom line, I’d definitely recommend the tour with Isabell as a guide.

“Excellent tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2013

Great morning out. Isabell is a local who really loves the neighborhood. She will give you a good explanation of the Favela's situation, with it's good and bad sides (drug traffic, gangs etc.). But the people in general are very friendly and it is safe to walk around. I think that visiting a Favela is very important to understand Rio.Because the Favelas are everywhere, many people talk about it without never having been there.
Don't leave Rio without having seen a Favela with it's banana trees, washing lines and kid's flying kites....
