I stayed at Miramar from May 23-28 and what a great hotel. My stay was pre-World Cup and I thought the location was great. It is directly across the street by beach marker 5 on the beach strip. It is located perfectly that you can identify your hotel location when walking. Also this is where the hotel has a tent set up for guest services for use of sun chairs/loungers. Nearby ( about a city block) there is a night market where you purchase your tourist items Monday - Saturday. Piece of advice is to buy your items here and don't get your hopes up at the Sunday Market aka "Hippie Market".
I had a beach view on the 10th floor that was simply marvelous. From my window we can see the beauty of Copacabana. The room was a great size. It was not an issue for me, but there is no tub just a shower stall. Great toiletries also. I love the sense of clean, and these rooms are truly that. Both bath and bed linen smelled super clean.
The hotel layout is simple. There is a great roof deck which serves great drinks and quick bites. The pool is small, but there is an entire ocean across the street. The fitness center located on the same floor is perfect size for a hotel.
We had breakfast included in the room package. Breakfast was great. Omelette station, a wide array of cereal, juices, cold cuts, cheese, breads and super fresh fruit were offered. The service staff was very attentative.
The lobby staff was by far the spotlight of this hotel. I do not speak a word of Portuguese, and didn't need to. The front desk, bell hop and security all spoke English. They were all very helpful. We bothered them a lot, and everytime they were very helpful.
Security is discrete, but very tight. I never felt unsafe in this hotel. Rio for the most part is safe as long as you walk on the strip and don't draw attention to yourself. It can be dodgy once you walk in the opposite direction of the beach. But you still can walk on the avenue to eat and buy water at the supermarket.
Copacabana and all of Rio is a city. It's a city by the beautiful beach, but still a very busy city. With that said you have to excercise caution. Do not draw attention to yourself by wearing flashy clothes, shoes, sneakers, jewelry, talking on your cellphone and simply acting like you do not belong there. Blend in, the locals are super laid back. There is no need to be flashy.
