“Would not stay again”
Reviewed 17 September 2011

Rio is a surprisingly expensive city and I booked my accommodation late, which meant I ended up paying around $235/night. I don't mind paying that for a better standard hotel, but having booked late the good hotels were already up in the $350 - $450 range. Having paid around the same rate in Sao Paulo the previous week for a much better hotel that I also booked late (The Pullman) I was very disappointed with the Mercure. Even if I got a better deal at the Mercure, though, I wouldn't stay here again. The furnishings are dated, shabby and in need of replacement. I was on the 1st Floor, which was actually around four floors up (the car park was on the first few floors, and it was really noisy in the mornings starting from around 5:30, with what I think were the staff preparing breakfast in the hotel's kitchen one floor below talking loudly or shouting. This was exacerbated by the paper thin windows which also did nothing to dull the roaring traffic noise on the busy street outside. The air conditioning is also not very sleep-friendly: the air-con in the tiny bedroom is located in a position so that it can only blow in one direction -- directly on your face! When you are visiting somewhere for business sleep is important -- you need to front up reasonably fresh and alert -- so four straight nights with minimal sleep was not good.

On the upside, the hotel is located within an easy walk to either Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, although I avoided Copacabana. The front desk staff were great -- really friendly and helpful. They deserve to work at a better hotel. Overall, if I go to Rio again I'll plan my accommodation much further in advance and stay somewhere on Ipanema.

We spent three nights at the Mercure Arpoador, which is in an entirely satisfactory location. We had problems checking in when the front desk staff tried to charge us again for our room, having not been clear that THEY were meant to invoice the website with which we had booked (and already paid for) the room. This involved *us* phoning Australia to iron out the difficulties, which isn't really how you want to spend your time in Rio. Once it was worked out, we found the staff to be sufficiently helpful. The floor we were on was occasionally noisy, but the room was clean and comfortable, and a short walk to the beaches at Ipanema and Copacabana. We found grocery stores close by, as well as restaurants, bars and shops---which was ideal. The hotel didn't blow our minds, but we didn't go to Rio to hang out in the hotel, in the end, so this was just fine for our needs.

Mercure Apartments in Rio are almost usual Mercure style hotel but the accommodation is 1 bedroom and living room with kitchenette. Prices are rather high but the level of service is also high enough to satisfy a customer.

Pros:
- location! it was chosen intentionally to stay straight between Copacabana and Ipanema. And it is worth staying here I must say. Although your room's window provide no view here, but it's only 5 minutes walk to the greatest city beaches. Arpoador cape is really nice presenting fantastic view of Ipanema beach. The neighborhood is quiet and safe enough and you can walk here in the evening with no worry;
- friendly reception staff works perfectly when checking in and out; also they could advise you two options for city tour (5-6 hour express and 8 hours full including rodizio dinner) and best places to visit nearby;
- great breakfast, all that you desire in the morning is here and fruit choice is extensive;
- nice free coffee machine in the lobby;
- convenient free wi-fi internet in the room.

The only complaint was:
- small hotel pool was out of service during our stay, but with announcement provided.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor room

Having visited Rio a number of times this is the only hotel I have returned to.
The location is ideal...very close to both Ipanema and Copa and the area has a much 'safer' feel than some parts of the city.
I have always found the staff to be helpful and although not all are fluent in English this has never been a problem.
I do not take breakfast at the hotel as there really is no need...rooms are well equiped with a small kitchen area and a very short walk to to local shops in the morning for fruit,warm bread and juice is the perfect start to the day!
All told with hotel prices rising rapidly in Rio this hotel represents good value in a great location

I stayed in Mercure for business. The hotel is an apartment hotel so you have kitchen and all. The couch in the living room was quite old and distracted. The bedroom is very nice.
The staff is absolutely helpful and friendly but not everyone speaks English - like go for breakfast and forget about English! I don't speak Portuguese so it was tough. Called for room service, they talked in Portuguese and I caught the word reception so called them. The reception staff is quite friendly.
