“Small rooms but clean and well services”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

After being in Manaus for 6 days we decided to fly to Rio for the weekend before our flight back to the states. The reviews about this hotel have been mixed so what I did was send an email directly to the manager (based on his responses here on trip advisor) and requested a renovated room and mentioned my concerns re: cleanliness and towel issues. :)

Immediately I received a response that my requests were noted and they were looking forward to my stay. I remembered the tip here on trip advisor to go to the 2nd floor reception which is a great tip because the person at the first floor desk rarely speaks English. Check-in was a breeze, I forgot the name of the person who checked us in but his name was Vxxxxx anyway, he patiently answered all my questions re: tours I wanted to take and suggested days/tours based on the short time I would be there taking into consideration it was world cup and Brazil was playing all weekend. His suggested days and tour company was "on point" and my daughter and I had a great time.

Anna was also very helpful at the check-in desk and she spoke excellent English so whenever I had a question i.e. how to take the Metro and which stops I needed, restaurants, etc., she was very helpful. I liked her. I also liked the tall gentleman who worked in the aft/evenings. He was also very helpful and he also spoke good English.

The second day - as was told by another traveler, when the cleaning folks left they only left one towel but once I called the front desk they immediately sent over 3 towels. LOL. We never had a towel problem before.

Staying at this hotel in the renovated section was interesting. We were on the 3rd floor and upon arrival I swept open the drapes only to find myself looking straight into the kitchen/rooms/etc. of folks living in an apartment building. After I got over my initial shock (you can't leave your drapes open if you want privacy) it was quite fun to walk out to the balcony and folks bid you bon jeer (sp) Good Morning and wave. :)

The pool area was clean, as a matter of fact the entire hotel was clean and well maintained.

It is located right around the corner from bakeries, grocery stores, 5 min walk to the Metro - which is 1 stop to Copa Cabana beach, and pubs.

Everyone was friendly, we felt safe and I would definitely stay there again.

The wifi connection was strong and consistent. My daughter was able to always stream Netflix on her ipad with no problems.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room. If the next day you're short on towels just ring up the front desk an...

We went to the World Cup and were booked at this hotel with a group. Having read some of the previous reviews, we were prepared and hired a guide/translator. This helped with check-in, etc because there is definitely a language barrier. No one at the hotel speaks English. Upon check-in the staff was very friendly, but our room was not ready, and the restaurant was closed, so we waited in the lobby. The lobby appears to be newly renovated and looks very nice.

However, after waiting about an hour the restaurant opened at 12:00pm for lunch. We were starving, and the food was horrible! Majority of it was inedible. Most menu items seemed to be American food, but did not taste like anything we have here. For instance, the cheeseburger (on the menu a "meat burger") did not taste like meat we are familiar with. After waiting another two hours, our room was finally ready. Our room was a two bedroom, with a living room, and a kitchenette, and is one of the worst rooms I have ever stayed in!!! It would be equivalent to a two star motel in the U.S. It looked nothing like the pictures on their web-site. It looked very similar to some of the pictures posted here by other reviewers.

The room was old and dirty, with moldy showers, and filthy floors. All of the rooms were extremely small. In fact only one person can fit in the bathroom at a time and the door has to be closed to get into the shower. On the lamps and light fixtures there was about a year's worth of dust. We were given two bath towels and two hand towels each day, no washcloths, and pillows only on the master bed. The other room had none. Also, the sheets on our bed had holes in them. In addition, the air conditioning units are old wall units that did not work that well and have slight openings around them for bugs to get in. One morning when I tried to turn on the water in the shower, water came out of the sink faucet, but eventually I did get the shower to work. It was all just old, dirty, and uncomfortable. I dreaded going back to our room each night!!

Regarding service - As I said before, with the language barrier it was hard to get any help with anything. For instance, the maid never restocked our bottled water in the refrigerator so we asked the front desk for more. They told us the maid would do it that day, yet when we came back that night, we still had no water. We went to the front desk and tried to explain that we needed water, and we were told they didn't have access to any but told us to fill up cups from the water in the gym.

At this point, we wished we could check-out and stay somewhere else but everything was booked for the World Cup, so we had to stay. If we ever go back to Rio we will not be staying here.

Booked apartment for 3 nights to rest up and recover from jetlag before the world cup started. Room was tiny and did not have kitchenette as advertised. The room did not have towels and glasses for 2 people and we had to basically fetch them ourselves as there were no responses to our requests. We decided to do a day tour of Rio and discovered that by booking the tour at the hotel we had been charged 300BR more than another couple who had also booked through their hotel reception. The room was clean but we felt that we had been taken advantage of by the reception staff both for the tour and room.

Some rooms are double and huge, with two bathrooms and a living room connecting both bedrooms, excellent option for large families or groups. Even the smaller rooms are still big. Excellent location, but you may find some traffic jam on rush hours. Excellent breakfast with many options and nice gym. Very nice and courteous staff.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally nice.

We had a terrible room despite our e-mail and telephone conversations with the hotel before arrival. Upon arrival they did as if they knew nothing and gave us the worst room i have ever seen in my whole life. Room was dirty, molded, outdated, aircon not working properply and of course nothing like the pictures they put on their website. When we reminded them of our email and phone conversations about getting a renovated and clean room, they got rude and simply denied talking with me. Anyway we couldn't walk away immediately, because we arrived late at night, so we paid only for one night at the reception and booked another hotel right away on the internet for the rest of our stay. Slept only one night with our clothes on! didn't want my skin to touch anything from this hotel! In this age of internet, cameras and smart phones, it is funny that they think that they can cheat people like this and get away with it. Shame. Avoid this hotel if you are fond of hygene and decency. See my pictures: dirty tiles, mold, wet electric switches, not working AC with bug holes. I would rate them worse than terrible, but there is no button here for that..

After reading some of these experiences, I decided to call the hotel in advance, to ask if I was going to have any surprise charges. They said they would charge me again for the taxes that I had ALREADY paid for, and were included in my package. After many calls, they decided these were "different" taxes. Thank god I had purchased insurance on that and was able to get a refund for the hotel part.
If you expect people to return to your hotel and recommend it to their friends, start by not trying to rip them off. I will be crashing at a friend's couch instead.

Booked 6 nights via lastminute.com. Arrived on Sat 15th Feb for late checkin. Arrived at desk and there was no one there. Security guard could not speak English and we don't speak Portugese or Spanish but somehow realised there was a separate reception on the 2nd floor.

Receptionists are very friendly and helpful but a major language barrier.

Breakfast was excellent. Very good selection of hot and cold buffet.

Receptionist managed to arrange a trip for Monday morning but had to be at another Mecure hotel for 8am pickup.

Woke up early to get ready and have breakfast but there was no water in the bathroom. Tried ringing reception and phones were not working. Tried taking the lift down from the 5th floor and lifts were not working. We panicked as there was no one around and then attempted to go down the fire escape stairwell. It was pitch dark and we scrambled 5 floors down in the darkness with the light from or mobile phone.

Finally made it to the reception and explained what happened and they seemed by relaxed about it. asked them to book a taxi but they said phones were down. Geo told us it will take 5 minutes to get to the to the other hotel. He took us down another 2 flight of stairs and eventually ran to the main road to hail a taxi for us. It' seemed ages before when finally came back with a taxi and explained to the driver where to take us to. The so called 5minute journey was in fact a half an hour journey. the driver dropped us off at the wrong place. We were already late at this stage.

turned up at the other Mercure and the receptionist did not have any documentation of us and was not prepared to ring up the tour company as we were 'not guests of their hotel'. After a bit of persuasion a call was made and we eventually were asked to wait and the tour leader eventually turned up half an hour later. (I would say they are bit laid back and take their time advice with a pinch of salt). Don't ask about the tour as that was another story!

Tuesday after a day out on our own by Copacabana beach, we came back to shower and sleep. 2 dogs living on either ends of the corridor decided to bark the night away. I rang reception and daniel said he will do what he can to stop the noise? By midnight the barking did not stop. I would have rung the RSPCA if I was in the uk as the dog seemed very distressed. I opened my door to see what was going on and the couple in the room opposite opened their door as well. She then rang reception as well but it did not make any difference.

Today my girls have gone out on their own. I did not have any sleep so catching up. Not sure what,s in for us tonight.

Another 2 nights I.m afraid.

now to contact lastminute.com to complain about this.

Room Tip: Room with balcony facing Christ statue is excellent
