To be honest the best thing about this hotel is it has a perfect location, with amazing views views of the city from the roof top pool. The staff are amazing in the hotel and in the private area reserved for guests only on the beach, and the beach attendant is really good looking after you and providing towels etc.
Having said that this hotel is very expensive and so I had really high expectations and there wasn't really anything that took my breath away. So to be honest I would save my money text time and stay in any other mid range hotel and spend the money on going to an amazing restaurant etc, or pay slightly more and go for a hotel with an epic roof top pool or something.

Room Tip: defo get a room with a view of the sea as high up as possible.

Stayed here with a friend and the staff were unbelievably helpful and friendly. It's got prime position right on the beach and the hotel is spotless. One of the comfiest beds I've ever slept in and a feast of a breakfast with a fantastic selection of fruit, eggs to order, bacon, sausages, cereal and pastries. It was heaven and I'd definitely stay there again. The doormen even have huge umbrellas for you to borrow in the rain and a towel waiting for you when you return. Don't hesitate in staying here!

The hotel is located right on the beach with the metro and shopping very close. Not the best JW I have ever stay at but friendly staff and location made it a good pick. Walk out the door and across the street and your on the beach.

Room Tip: Great location to explore from

With only a few days to the opening of the world cup soccer in Rio, we couldn't help but find ourselves reminiscing one of our best family vacations ever, all over again. Our review for JW Rio has been long long 'n long overdue. For our stay's timeline here, we were made to pick June 2013 by trip advisor's calender choice, whereas we actually stayed at JW Rio for 5 nights in the 3rd week of June two years prior to that.
This was our family's first ever visit to Brazil. For more than a decade now, we are Marriott members, so staying at JW was an easy pick. Coming from California, our first stop was Manaus for a 4-day jungle trip to Amazon rainforest. we then flew overnight on red-eye to Rio, arriving wee-hours in the morning at the airport. While we were absolutely jet-lagged and struggling to adjust the big change from the peace and tranquility of the Amazon to entering one of the world's most popular, crowded 'n crazy big city destinations, unwilling to make the switch overnight... until our taxi came right in front of JW's doorstep. It was an awe-inspiring, strikingly breathtaking view in front of our eyes. Ooh la la, this hotel takes on an amazingly prime spot right across the Atlantic ocean facing the bustling copacabana beach (which at 5:30 am in the morning looked so vast 'n empty, peaceful 'n beautiful), you could just breathe in all it's beauty.., do yoga at sunrise, meditate or jog away with the beach all to yourself.
Upon entering, the lobby gave out a warm 'n welcoming vibe with decent decor in the sitting areas, while a dramatic 'n elegantly wide spiral staircase led the way to the restaurant level. Our check-in was unbelievably a breeze, considering we arrived so early in the morning in a big brand busy hotel, the front desk was gracious enough to give us our room right away. The bellboy escorted us with our luggage into our 1-bedroom executive suite on the 9th floor (concierge level) with a gorgeous oceanfront view. From then on, doors were opened with a smile and the service staff, especially at the concierge were every step of the way efficient and super friendly.
Our suite was spacious and looked perfectly clean 'n beautiful with designer furnishings throughout. Stepping inside the door was a huge designer chest with a mirror in the hallway that had a mini-bar, a nice 'n roomy safe, coffemaker and in-room free "Acqua Panna" bottled waters with a shelf full of magazines 'n books to read in your spare time. Living/sitting room had a pull-out sofa bed, sofa chairs and TV. The bedroom was spacious as well, with TV alongside a long work desk and chair, a King-sized comfy bed, a sofa-chair by the window and two huge wall closets with ample luggage storage shelves. This suite truly was a great accomodation for the comforts of a small family. The all marble bathroom was super neat, with a spacious double-tub and a single shower on the side, with a Bidet next to a toilet (as commonly seen in high-end hotels in Brasil). Best of all, our suite had an end-to-end crescented view of Avenida Atlantica to boot. Both the room's windows were decent sized to look all around the expansively spreadout Copa beach on the vast ocean. Of course, who wouldn't have loved a balcony with the ocean breeze, but these windows were no holes in the wall as some have mentioned in their reviews.
On the distant left, we could see the hugely popular, Sugarloaf mountain on the northwesterly direction from our window, and on the right, to southeasternly direction we could see a distant view of "Forte de Copacabana".
Definitely our shoutout to the impeccable housekeeping staff. Everyday they replenished ample toiletries in the bathroom and replaced bottled waters in each room.Evening turndown service was an added plus with chocolates, more bottled waters and fresh towels if needed. Loved JW's slippers as well. We alway do.
The hotel's roof-top has Copa's amazing views. It also has a 24-hr. clean, well-equipped, but a bit small sky-roof gym, and a heated pool, for a quiet getaway from the big city's craziness on loose downstairs. Also worth mentioning were the buffet-breakfasts at the concierge lounge that were exquisitely prepared for the morning fare. There were varieties of freshest of tropical fruits, breads/pastries, scrambled eggs and quiches with veggies, and sides of meats 'n potatoes. Again, with hot 'n cold beverages served by their fantastic staff. Sometimes cold croissant/pastry sandwiches (if you're lucky enough to have found any, while only at early lunch-hrs.), yoghurt cups and all day hot 'n cold beverages were there for the lounge guests to take from their mini-fridge. Evening hors d'oeuvres, were served with sometimes salads, soups or mini-quiches with desserts and cocktails in the end for the lounge guests. Sometimes it was hard to find seating, as the lounge got overly crowded only in the evenings. They allowed us to take our wine and desserts plates to our room.
We walked around a lot easily outside JW, as the neighborhood felt safe. Since there's no ATM in the hotel, we found one on a short walk, behind the hotel, only a block down on the back street where there were also good local lunch places, an authentic Brasilian bar, souvenir shops and HSBC's ATM. I was also amazed to see how the city closes the traffic just in one direction on the ocean/beachside of the road on sundays (though not sure if it's every sunday), so local citizens and tourists can go walk, jog, rollerblade, take their babies on strollers, walk their family's sick or elderly on a wheelchair, was for me a refreshingly happy yet somewhat emotional scene to watch from the top of my suite's window. I couldn't help but find myself overcome with the feeling of intense respect for the Brasilian community.
The other highlight of our Rio's stay was sight seeing. Our Corcovado trip to Cristo Redento was one of the most memorable, since we went on the weekend of Corpus Christi religious holiday, it turned out to be quite an adventurous trip for our family, careening through the ever-growing crowds all the way from down below to the mesmerizing view up on the top. I was emotional all over again. You can plan ahead for this trip and concierge desk can be very helpful to book any trip for you in the city. Also keep in mind, these trips can get very expensive everytime you leave your hotel in a cab. Or, there's a convenient bus service just a block down, behind the hotel. Rio's city bus services are safe, clean, comfortable & affordable to use. Many of these are modern Mercedes buses just like in Europe. Get a bus schedule from your nearest transit station. We actually enjoyed taking the bus on a late afternoon to Sugar Loaf Mountain and back. The return buses have different bus numbers & sometimes takes slightly different route.
On the last day, we hired a full day cab just for a family trip around the scenic spots of Rio. Our cab driver, Paolo spoke very good english and was kind enough to take time to drive us around without rushing. Concierge desk was very helpful in carving out our day's itinerary. From frolicking in Ipanema beach, to "Two Brothers" mountain on the right/southside of Ipanema, to the hidden gem of Rio, "Pedra Bonita Mount",or the monkey face mountain (that can be seen towering above the forest of Tijuca national park), also a place that attracts many plunging thrill seekers at the favorite take-off peak for hand-gliders. Rio is a home to the 8000 acre rainforest that is expansively spreadout within the city, known as Parque National da Tijuca, where we visited the most impressive falls, "Cascatinha de Taunay" (35 m in ht.). Surely interesting was stopping by at "Rocinha" favela at Rio's largest favela built on the side of a steep hill. Last stop was Rio's Estadio do Maracana, home of their soccer team, brought us to a full circle. For my husband, when in the suite, it was all about watching "Copa America"/soccer on TV, just as die-hard Brasilian fans.
Final thought, we had a lot of fun staying at JW Rio. For our family, this 5-night stay came with a hefty price-tag. We used our marriott reward points for the stay in addition to paying $300+ per night in extra cash. As would any other high-end hotel in Rio, JW exceeded our expectations of delivering a memorable vacation.
"Muito Obrigada !!" to the entire JW's staff. We wish, we could return sometime soon to the JW Rio, and enjoy some more of this fascinating world-class city.

Room Tip: It's best to stay in an oceanfront suite on any upper floors, with the lounge access to boot !!

Very helpful reception staff who were able to facilitate an early check in, this was much appreciated. Lovely comfortable room where I enjoyed a good nights sleep.

The staff at the concierge desk were all very helpful and made arrangements at a very nice restaurant for me, with taxi etc. I used the business center beside the concierge desk and the free WIFI in lobby area.

Breakfast was very pleasant with a nice omelette, lunch in the lobby was also very good.
