Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Copacabana
Ranked #73 of 283 Hotels in Rio de Janeiro
Reviewed 16 August 2012

This is a big hotel, right on the shores of Copacobana Beach, and 5 minutes walk to Ipanema Beach. You can't get a much better location.

The club lounge is a bonus too. It's worth paying extra for access to the top floor lounge (for free drinks and food all day) and a view (albeit distant) of Christ the Redeemer.

But the hotel is going through refurbishment at the moment. So some of the restaurants are closed at the moment. And there is building noise quite regularly during the day.

The rooms are alos fairl old and drab (with lots of wood panelling), so not the most modern hotel in the world.

In short, a pretty expensive hotel for what you get. But if it's location you're looking for, it's ideal.

Room Tip: Pay for a club room for access to the club lounge (if it's not much more expensive).

Bonjour and thank you for your comment.

Indeed, Sofitel Rio is perfectly located and I am glad to hear that you enjoyed our Club Millésime.

I take the opportunity to inform that the Atlantis restaurant, which was being renovated, is already open for business.

We hope to welcome you back soon.

I was in Sao Paolo for business and went to Rio DJ for just weekend, one night stay. The hotel was recommended by our agent. It's a good location in the begining of Copacabana from where you can easliy switch to Ipanema. They have a beach across the street where you can take free sunbeds and towels. The hotel is quite big and in 5 star quality. Most of the time I was out but the limited time I've spent in the hotel had no problem at all. Only be careful about the taxi. It's too expensive in the hotel.

Just back from my stay in Sofitel Rio de janeiro and i had to say we throughly enjoyed our experience, we got a room on the 6 floor and a had a lovely side seaview , i thought the rooms were a decent size of what you would expect for a typical hotel room, the bed was so comfy and the bathroom lovely and modern looking with a gorgeous rainfall shower. Hotel was in a great location with great access to the beach across the road, where the hotel offer complimentary loungers, towels and water !The breakfasts are on the first floor overlooking the beach and its not a bad view to start your day ! . The hotel has two pools ,a great fitness centre and a lovely bar again overlooking the beach. Would definitely recommend it!!

At Sofitel they make you feel important with service, look and feel and details. The rooms were a but snall but the bed was a 10! The soap in the bathroom was from L'Ocitanne, big detail.
The hotel from the outside is not the coolest looking building but your impressions in the front desk will change, simply impressive service. Everyone is a vip

Restaurant was alright, you would expect food a bit tastier.

View to the beach is very relaxing

Expensive but worth it

I don't want to overplay our experience - this clearly is a special hotel, catering for the wealthy. However, our time there, perhaps on account of a number of freak occurrences, was a crushing disappointment.
Upon arrival, there was clearly a problem with the Mastercard link from the hotel. Neither of our credit cards would connect - given only the message 'Please Try Again'. Whilst this was unfortunate, it was clearly NOT a case of our perfectly good cards being denied by the provider. However, the member of staff seemed paralysed by this, simply trying over and again for the best part of an hour - strongly hinting that it was down to our cards or lack of means that they were failing to work (there was even a patronising attempt to reduce the amount being put onto the card to something more affordable - well I guess I was the only one in the lobby not wearing head-to-toe Ralph Lauren...). I was infuriated by being made to feel out of place and even more so by the fact we were not allowed past the desk without resolution - despite the room having been pre-paid! (This was merely a deposit taken for food/services).
Having paid in cash (taken using the same card from the nearest cash machine) we arrived angry in the room to find that the 'Ocean View' was actually a building site view - a very noisy one at that - as the restaurant was being renovated that week beneath our balcony. The welcome and the industrial noise would have been sufficient to spoil our time, but an electrical problem then put out all our lights that night too! It took us a long time to realise it actually was a problem as the lights are so hilariously complicated anyway - there are two different 'master' switches in different parts of the room, needing to be 'on' (one to the left, the other to the right) before any other switches in the room can work...
So, yes, there were nice touches - like the fresh popcorn with the DVD or the service at the bar - but this was among the most disastrous hotel nights we've had - a shame when its also the most expensive. (And the 'luxury' room itself is nothing particularly special either).

Room Tip: Check there are no renovations that night!!

We had three rooms at the sofitel for our family of 6. The two standard rooms were good, clean, well equipped but nothing amazing. The kids were in a suite overlooking copacabana beach which was amazing! It was very spacious and had the most incredible views, with butler service, free drinks and loads of space. The breakfasts are on the first floor overlooking the beach and are great. The hotel has two pools(to capture both the morning and afternoon sun) and a great fitness centre. The position is really good, it s down the end of the beach so a short walk to ipanema beach and which I think have the best places to eat and shop. The hotel is really good and i would recommend it, but the experience was made even better because of the kids suite, a very expensive upgrade because they could not fit three beds in a room

We spent three nights in a superior room, 8th floor, which brings (to our surprise) many benefits such as snacks and drinks and special check-in and out, etc. This means I can't comment on the other rooms, which some reviewers seem not to have been too happy about.
Overall, we were delighted with what we got and intend to return.
The room was not large but was very comfortable (Sofitel have excellent beds so we slept very well) and, I'm happy to say, pretty quiet. Service from everyone (and I mean everyone) we met was great. Breakfast was excellent (another reviewer here found it only average - which makes me wonder what people want) with fruits, juices, bread, freshly cooked eggs/omelets, etc. And the view at breakfast is stunning - and I've lived in Rio so I'm kind of used to it, but this was great.
We're Sofitel fans, having stayed in several round the world and mostly found them very good. This one didn't let us down and we'd recommend it. Not cheap by any means (at least in the rooms we booked) but we wanted quality relax time after a stressful week and found it.
Location is excellent too of course.
Shortly before this we stayed at Windsor Asturias in Rio (I have reviewed that hotel too). How the Asturias can be rated higher than Sofitel on this site is a real mystery to me and a reminder that even on tripadvisor, you need to check things out beyond just the numerical listing.
