Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Copacabana
Ranked #75 of 286 Hotels in Rio de Janeiro

I was rather disappointed with my stay at the Sofitel Copacabana. The rates were high and yet the room was worn out and did not make a particularly clean impression. The overall facility is in urgent need of a make over. The location and the views are impressive but that is almost all there is to report on the good side of things. The service was kind but slow. The breakfast was fine but dull and boring. I expect more from a hotel that advertises itself as a five star facility. This hotel is 3 1/2 stars at best and below the usually good Sofitel standards. The pool area is covered by what looks like a DIY roof of wooden beams and plastic sheets from Home Depot, not very inviting. My advise, stay away till this palace is refurbished.

Amazing how people have such different views of a hotel. We stayed for three nights and had a fantastic time. Our room was modern (617), everything worked as it should and we had fantastic views over Copacabana Beach. No complaints here. We ate twice at the hotel - the Sunday all you can eat seafood buffet that also included champagne and a five course extravaganza in Le Pre Catalan - both maybe a little pricey, but the food was first class. Staff we used were always very helpful - maybe a bit pompous - but always sorted what we wanted.

So for us a five star experience!!

Very nicely situation hotel, nice atmosphere and generally very friendly staff.
Poor service at the beach (generally lazy and quite unfriendly attitude to be honest), great service at front desk (except for irritating non functioning keycards every second day, great service and very friendly staff at the restaurant and at the gym.

It may be listed in the five star alliance but it's far from luxury. The exterior is in bad need of repair. The room smelled like a locker room. We've had cruise ship rooms bigger than this one.

The staff, other than the concierge desk, is not interested in servicing the guests.

The food was average at best, and the brunch on Sunday is packed with locals so expect a wait for a seat at the food fight.

It is located in a great spot.

The airline crews stay there nightly, which is a great indicator of whether or not it's truly a luxury hotel. Not.

Staff is very helpful and efficient. It feels safe. The location is great. Nice views over the Copacabana. Breakfast buffet is good. But the rooms are small, old and smelly. For such a high room rate I've been expecting a lot more!!! Bottom line: Not worth the money at all. If money's not an issue, it's an ok location to stay in Rio.

Toilets blocked twice!! Water leaked out of shower, no bath - drawers did'nt close- outside door did'nt have handle- more like a 2 star hotel - but priced at 6 star!! Good service but so old !! Good food-

Room Tip: ask for high floor, front facing - maybe they will renovate rooms so ask for those

Waiting until 3pm for your room to be ready is such a bummer, but 'hanging out' on the Sofitel pool deck (there are two) is impossible to complain about!

Complimentary soft drink, followed by lunch (had to pay for that..) was a pleasure, an exquisite Caesar salad. They also offer a gourmet buffet, R$95 which really looked fabulous - on the first day the main offering was meat loaf.

3pm soon comes round and you can can finally access your swimwear wardrobe and that all important sunscreen!

This hotel has a slightly old fashioned but fully equipped gym, at least forty machines, plus free weights etc. There is also a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and various treatments on offer. There are three gym instructors and personal training is available. I had a training session everyday in the downtime between 'too late to be on the beach' and 'too early to go to dinner' - highly recommended.

We had a really nice spacious room, great view, comfy bed, fantastic huge walk in shower, proper shaving mirror, glass desk with loads of accessible plugs for laptop, iPad, iPhone, Camera charger etc. - just lots of features that are always so nice to have.

Breakfast is a feast of cereals, soft fruits, breads, pastries, cheeses and eggs any way you like them (with Champagne if that is your thing). This all takes place in a beautiful setting on the deck overlooking Copacabana Beach and around the pool, there are also tables inside. Breakfast is popular and can be pretty busy!

We enjoyed the food and excellent service in the hotel so much, we ate in on quite a few evenings, which I can recommend.

It was my Birthday during the trip, and the hotel must have picked up this detail from check in because room service turned up with Complementary Champagne and a Cake, which was a very nice touch - just as well I had been using the gym!!

WiFi is available all over the hotel including in the rooms, but we had to keep logging back in, which is a little annoying.

Around 45 rooms are allocated to airline crew, who exude unbelievable confidence and treat the hotel like their personal club, sometimes they seem to take over the breakfast deck, but this a minor detail really.

This is great hotel in a superb location and we will be back - very soon!!!
