“Exceptional location, hotel and staff”

We have just returned from Rio de Janeiro and choose to stay four nights at the Sofitel.
This was our first visit to the city and choose this hotel on location and recommendation.
We are delighted with the stay - from the moment we were collected from the airport, arriving at the hotel and being checked in at the 8th Floor Club Millesime.
The hotel is located in a superb position on Copacabana Beach and felt safe all of the time.
Without exception - all of the hotel staff were most attentive and courteous and gave a genuine feeling of wanting to help. Our Butler Marcos Alencar on the 8th Floor was most helpful.
The room was in great condition and exceptionally clean and all items were re-stocked on a daily basis and also during the turn down service in the evening.
The hotel Concierge were the best I have come across in a hotel and would mention in particular Leonel Leandro and his wider team.
We plan to visit Rio again next year and will most certainly stay at the Sofitel again.

Room Tip: Higher floor the better - we stayed on the 8th Floor and ask for an ocean view

The trouble with Rio de Janeiro is that the boom in Brazil's economy, combined with the rising interest in Rio as a tourist destination, means that prices are higher than in most other big cities including London, New York, and Paris. At the same time, workers are in demand, so employees do not stay in the same job for long, often switching for 10% pay rises after just six months in a position. What does this mean? It means that, no matter where you go in Rio, and to a lesser extent in any major Brazilian city, service quality is going to be poor and overpriced. The Sofitel Copacabana is no exception.

Overall, the price is definitely one of the most expensive on Avenida Atlantica. I've been to Rio seven times for work and holiday and while all of the hotels are expensive, this was the one of the priciest. Unlike the local ones however, I was hoping that because Sofitel worldwide is quite good, this might be up to international standards. Not so.

I switched rooms three times, and each one was worse than the last. All of the furniture was badly stained such that I never wanted to let my bare feet touch the floor. The drapes were damaged and did not close properly so a laser beam of sunlight woke me up at 5:30am every day. And the door handles on the closets came off in my hand five minutes into my stay and was never repaired.

Staff were helpless it seemed to make any difference. Cleaners may have been present but other than making the bed, it was not clear to me they existed. I found candy wrappers under the chair from a previous guest, within plain sight.

On the plus side, the dining area is nice, with a lovely view of the beach and fortress, and the food is fresh and well made as one would expect in a country where eating is a national pasttime. The hotel is at the end of the Avenida Atlantic between Copacabana beach and Leblon, so is good for tourists looking to soak up some sun during the day and then party at clubs later on. As with all of the major hotels, security is a primary concern for the hotel and you will feel safe in or around it.

Pros:
- location is convenient in arpoador, inbetween copacabana and 5mn walk to ipanema
- gorgeous views if you are lucky with the assigned room (paying extra for thr sea view is recommended if you dont want to end up with a seedy building front view)

Cons:
- facilities are decades old and have never been refurbished. For eg, gym areas feel like horror movie, incredibly old with no daylight. All aeras were so old and dodgy i prefered to stay in the room. Level 1 and 2 wher you have common areas are a disgrace for a so called 5 stars.
- air con is insanely noisy plus they are refurbishing the facade so you get waken up on weekdays early morning, which is intolerable when you go there to relax and you have paid more than 300 euros per nigh for that!
- tv is small, old first generation flatscreen, limited chanels, only 1 with english movies ( even the ibis botafogo has newer larger screens)
- food and beverage is pretty poor anh dull.
- management is not doing a great job as staff is unhelpful. Generally service is average.
- cleaning is incredibly poor: linen has not been changed once in a 3 night stay, glasses were left used, cans were left....
- free wifi is poor.

Overall:
This sofitel is a joke. As one of the most expensive hotel in town, it fails everywhere but on the location. One advice: do not stay there, go somewhere else. As a frequent user of sofitel, being a platinum accor member, i suggest to get the hotel close for major refurbishment.

Very enjoyable. Nice hotel in a great location. Staff was attentive. Sweet view from the restaurant overlooking the bay and Copacabana Beach. Rooms are not as bad as soon of the reviews indicate. I look forward to returning.

This is a great hotel in the perfect location. Unfortunately the car service provided does not match the standard of the hotel. The drivers clearly don't want to do the job, are grumpy and will only take you as close to the destination as they want to which means that they don't have to go out of their way but you have to. Take a taxi, it is a better service at less cost.

Visited the restaurant and what a view, excellent choice of food and drinks available from the menu. Staff very attentive and cost less than you would pay on. A London hotel and boy what a view of the beach and very special evening out!

The most beautiful location probably of the copacabana beach and a few steps away from ipanema. Right in the middle of the of the attractions. Hotels has all the services you may need including gym (not so big), sauna and swimming pool outdoor. Restaurant with french cousine but above all the reserved area on the beach.
