“Totally deception”
Reviewed 25 January 2011

Only 30 minutes in the hotel was enough! Always stay in Sofitel's group, but this time was terrible! A trully deception! In midsummer, the bigger swimming pool was off, everything in the hotel seemed extremely old, not antique! Extremely used. And the worst, they charged half rate for 30 minutes.

We stayed in the Sofitel and booked the Club Millesime floor. The check-in is on the top floor and is done at a desk. We were offered champagne, which was a nice touch on arrival.
We had our breakfasts in the Club Millesime lounge, which is always staffed, generally with two people. The choices for breakfast were not great and in hindsight, we should have eaten a morning or two in the normal restaurant.
The hotel rooms are just okay, with the exception of the exceptional bed. All else was just average. Because we stayed over New Year's, we were obliged to stay at least three nights. We also booked the New Year's dinner, the better one of the two on offer and could watch the fireworks from the hotel pool balcony, which was a real treat. The party afterwards was a disappointment, though, as it was a make-shift dancefloor in a conference room area and we weren't allowed to go to the bar because the other group was there. The pleasure of this was a sizeable sum of money.
The hotel is showing its age. The outside really needs work. The carpets were in need of replacement, the corridors were very dark, etc.
I think for the price, we would try the Fasano next time.

The hotel charged me and my 2 colleagues for additional night (which was agreed to be payed by the company organizing the event there). At the check-in the man from the reception confirmed that extra night had already been payed for us. So all seemed to be fine until we found out that Sofitel charged our credit cards with 657,30 RS, each. Then we exchanged few emails with the hotel service but they always "kindly" presented their explanations bringing the conclusion to nowhere… The service of Sofitel seems to be simply unreliable saying not truth and cheating the customers. They have never given us money back. They just "apologized for any inconvenience caused" and wished "best regards." Parody! We will never trust Sofitel. Shame Sofitel, shame on you!

This hotel has the potential to be a truly 5 star facility. However, there are many details to fix before ther rates they charge are justified. I booked a deluxe Club room, but even tough I got upgraded I was disappointed:
- no turn down service provided the first night, had to ask for that the second night
- laundry returned at 9pm (delivered at 7:30am)!
- the one pool available is a disgrace and screams for refurbishment (total)!
- internet connection is "on and off" and even if it is free when in a Club room this is not good enough when on a business trip
- central airconditioning cannot be adjusted and room was far to warm in the night for me to get a good nights sleep for a Scandinavian!
- The humidity in the hotel is far to high. Bed linen is moist from the humid air and do also damage sleep

Now, in a 3 star hotel, paying 1/3 of the Sofitel rate I would accept this. Next time in Rio I will have to find another 5 star hotel and hope for the better.

NB! The Millésime Club Lounge on 8th floor is great. Good food, drinks and a fantastic staff! The views from my room also fantastic, but not enough to stay here again.

One: Sofitel is a great brand. Two: Copacabana! Need I say more? But one and two combined made me a bit disapointed. This is not what I expected. Maybe my expectations were too high? Average hotel quality. Not much more to say about it.

Loved my room - gorgeous shower with enough room for a few people and sunlight as it opens up to the room if you wish. Spent a lot of time on the balcony and enjoyed my partial view of the ocean. The backside of the hotel would probably not have been as pleasant. The bed was very comfortable, the lighting was great, housekeeping was efficient and charming. Spent an entire day by the pool, which I also enjoyed. What is strange, however, is that they could do SO much more with that pool area. The furniture is from the 80s. They could turn that area into a beautiful oasis given its views.

But I would definitely stay here again. Location can't be beat - smack dab on the beach and a 10 min walk to Ipanema for a change of scenery.

With so many good hotels in Rio I was very confused but lot of research helped and I am glad we choose Sofitel. We had the ocean facing view which was fantastic, service was great ,breakfast spread was amazing and what I liked the best was the bed and pillow menu. This hotel is at the end of Copacabana so we could practically see the entire beach from our room balcony.Though Ipanema can not be seen it is five minutes walk from the hotel.I would definitely recommend this hotel. We were in Sofitel for four nights and enjoyed every minute of it
