Porto Bay Rio well deserves its high scores on trip advisor. We spent 4 nights in Rio over Easter. The hotel location is excellent for the beach but the weather was not that kind to us for 2 of our 4 days. The hotel staff are first class. The included breakfast has a lot of excellent fruits and well prepared and presented foods both hot and cold. The rooms are business like and clean. The food for room service is good quality and reasonably priced. We ate in the hotel which is unusual for us.
Rio is firstly a city and the feel of the place is not that of a beach resort in the European sense. Do not expect the tourist feel of a beach resort and it is strangly pleasing that Portugese is the norm and English is not as common as in Europe. If you intend to visit the Christ statue there is a really easy option if you stay at the Porto Bay - just 100yds to the left / 1 block as you walk out of the hotel, there is a small park area which sells tickets to the syatue via mini bus. These leave about every half hour and take you up to the statue. it costs about R$ 42 including entrance fee. My tip is to put insect repellant on before you go because you are going up rain forrest roads and I got a massive bite while at the statue.
There is very little going on out and about after about 7pm. People are keeping themselves safe. It was also reassuring to see the hotel staff manning the door to the hotel.
We used the hotel cars to pick us up from the airport. Although it costs a bit more, it was worth it to have someone take charge of getting you to the hotel after a long flight.
We spent some time at the pool area which has some good sun beds, a small pool, a snack bar area and fabulous views. Staff were always friendly and helpful.
our departure for the airport was at 5pm. The hotel staff allowed us to get changed in a room before we left. I think all the staff we interacted with were always helpful and made our stay enjoyable. Good free WiFi in all areas and in our room. There are local shops one street back behind the hotel. We would reccommend this hotel if you are staying in Rio.

Room Tip: As usual the higher the better. Rooms 1 to 3 are more expensive with front views, 4 and higher are s...

I am typing this review while waiting for our airport transfer in between running to the bathroom with a stomach bug we have picked up from the hotel restaurant. We stayed 6 nights at the Porto Bay hotel. The positives were the free wifi, stunning pool area on the 20th floor, service at the bar was great, staff English as good and great location, The negatives, rooms are more 3 than 4 star, we had to wait 30 minutes for our room to be ready when we arrived (at like 4pm) and the tours offered were substantially more expensive than the same tours offered to a friend staying in a hotel 1 block away. Hence, we booked everything through the friends hotel. The most frustrating for me was that we spent the entire day at the hotel yesterday and only ate in the hotel restaurant. Two of our group had a cheeseburger (I noticed the meat didn't taste great while eating it) for lunch and we both have had stomach issues since. I informed the reception today that we were both sick and we only ate in the hotel restaurant - the person at the counter picked up the phone and called someone - but I have received no feedback. We have been waiting in the lobby for the past 2 hours (for our transfer), so that should be sufficient time to at least apologize to us. It's tempting to forward them our doctors bill... But I would rather just avoid the Porto Bay chain in future

Stayed here for 5 days and found the hotel to be clean, and well run. The staff were all really helpful and pleasant. Our room was large and again clean. We had balcony view of the bay which was great. The breakfasts were delicious with a wide array of choice. We did not eat n the restaurant in the evenings so cannot comment on this.
The hotel is just across the road from Copacabana beach and it is a short walk to lots of really good restaurants.
Really can't fault this place except that the lifts are very slow and too small for the size of the hotel as is also the sun lounge area on the roof.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a front view.

This hotel is right on the Copacabana about 2.5 kms from Ipanema. It is within walking distance of a host of restaurants and shops and provides an excellent spot to view the sweep of the beach and ocean from the rooftop swimming pool. At night you can see Corcovado illuminated...a great sight.
You are about 30-45 minutes taxi drive from the international airport and about 20 minutes to the cruise terminal.

I have no negatives about the place. The personnel were professional and spoke English excellently. They were neatly attired and always helpful.....5 stars all the way.

The hotel has beach access right across the road where you have lounge chairs, towels and sun shade provided free.

The restaurant breakfast was excellent and well worth the extra charge to the room.

We got a city tour through the hotel that took us about 4-5 hours and covered the main parts of the city. The guide was pleasant enough but she didn't speak English that well and I quit trying to listen to her. Our bus had 17 and we were told @ the hotel there would be no more than 10. Ultimately it probably didn't matter. All people on the bus were great...lucky I guess.

I have lots more comments for those interested.

Room Tip: We were on the 9th floor and had a east setting. We were high enough that we could see the beach whi...

I spent almost a week there and enjoyed the hotel. Service is great, their staff is kind and very helpful, the rooms and hotel are clean, the roof top terrace is amazing, and their food is also good. The only but was the bed, a little soft for me, and the pool is quite small (but actually normal for Rio standards).
Of course if you have kids, you need to go to the beach (just across the street) because besides the pool there is nowhere else for the kids to play.

I stayed for 9 nights with my family (April 2014) ..
On the upside staff was helpful and polite .. On the down side the hotel is very basic lobby area is limited , room was small, swimming pool was the size and depth of a bath tub ! But had beautiful views of the Copacabana .. As it is in the 20th floor .. Breakfast had limited items and never changed all nine days !
Overall I would not recommend it and I would not return again
