I had a short stay at the Porto Bay Hotel during the first week of the 2014 World Cup. The hotel staff were all very helpful 24/7 and the amenities were sufficient for a comfortable stay. Rooms were not plush by any means but they had all that was needed for a short stay in Rio. Breakfast was outstanding with a nice view of the Copacabana beach. The location is fantastic with a few Brazilian BBQ restaurants within walking distance. Churrascaria Palace (5mins walk) had amazing traditional Brazilian meat 10/10 and is apparently one of the best in Rio.
The roof top pool is very chilled & cool with a nice set up of indoor outdoor areas. The pool is small but you only need it to cool down. The view is amazing with views of sugar loaf, Corcovado (christ statue), and the beach. You can get a drink (which were all nice and strong) from the bar and tan or sit inside to catch some sport on the LCDs. Above the pool is nice basic Gym with shower and sauna.
I would recommend the hire of a few bikes and ride along all of the beaches in the area.

This was a terrible hotel. I can't point to anything good about it other than the instant access to Copa Cabana beach. Not one employee working at the hotel knew English while I stayed there. They didn't have an iron and for some reason I could not get any of my laundry washed using their service during my stay. The worst thing about the room was the bathroom which was dilapidated and extremely small. Breakfast was okay. By the end of my stay, I was convinced the R$800 per night I payed for a superior room was a rip off.

Room Tip: High room to avoid the sometimes loud streets

Definitely Porto Bay has a privileged position in Copacabana. If you have the opportunity of a high floor room with views you will be able to enjoy great Copacabana views. You can go for a walk from Copacabana to Ipanema (about 8km back and forth to the beginning of Ipanema, or if you do until the end of Ipanema 14km the round trip) The food in the hotel is really good and I would say the breakfast and lunch will not leave anyone disappointed. Those are the two keys to this hotel.
That said when it comes to the room, then you have to cut on expectations. The bathroom is small and while all is working and operational is quite inconvenient. The furniture and decoration of the room is probably a 3 star at its best. Probably because of World Cup the employees where not very attentive and not really on top of your needs or even visible at some points.
All in all makes for a safe, clean stay in Rio, but do not expect to come out of it with an impression of luxury or 4 star hotel.

The first hotel of our South American visit and a cracker to start with. An excellent location, across the road from Copacabana beach. The service was excellent and the rooms were a decent size. Our bathroom had a marble bath which was very pleasant. A nearby metro station made it easy to get to any part of the city and the local area had plenty of restaurants within walking distance. There is a rooftop pool with excellent views along the beach as well as been able to see Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf mountain. I would certainly use this hotel again

Room Tip: Obviouesly, a sea-view room is desirable

The hotel itself is fine - the location, the service, the room size... And the terrace on the top floor where you can enjoy a spectacular view.
However it really needs to be renovated, it's old and somewhat shabby.
Especially when you are in your room, that is really spacious, cosy and with good lighting, you keep thinking that with some renovation to make it more modern and newer it would be really great!
And I understand hotels in Copacabana are really expensive and this could be a good solution, but at the end of the day you feel you would be willing to pay an extra price to stay somewhere nicer.

On top, I had the room in front of the lift, and being the walls paper thin, it was not really easy to fall asleep...

Room Tip: Ask for a room with ocean view and far from the lift!

This was the third time we'd stayed at this property, and once again it was a two night stay. We arrived quite late in the evening at the hotel but the car we had reserved through them was there waiting for us when we arrived at Rio airport.

For the second time out of three stays we were upgraded to a junior suite (I think). It was very large with a large sitting area and a balcony overlooking the beach (Copacabana) which we made quite a lot of use of. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean, and they are the two basics I look for. The breakfast was excellent with a wide range of choices and with tables being constantly cleared and the buffet checked and more food being put out all the time - sounds simple but many hotels just don't do this.

The only really minus is that the lifts are sooooo slowwwww, and they're small as well which means that there are often queues and if you're trying to join at an intermediate floor they'll often be full and you'll need to wait for another. We gave up a couple of times and walked down the stairs which eventually took us out to the street through the hotel loading bay, got us some strange looks though.

That said if we ever go back to Rio we will stay here, we know it, we like it and they make great caiprinha's at the rooftop bar with amazing views over the beach and to Corcovado - our best memory of our stay in Rio!

Unfortunately, the start of our holiday was bad when arriving in Rio, as our airline lost our suitcases. Nevertheless Portobay was very supportive to this affect and assisted where needed, although we did not expect much.

Eventually. After two days are suitcases arrived —with the kind assistance from Porto Bay's front desk staff to track the delivery with our airline. After this the holiday began to be enjoyable, feeling more comfortable with exploring the Copacabana beach which the hotel sits directly on; having been admiring it for our initial couple days from our Deluxe Panoramic Ocean View Room —Copacabana beach was stunning.

I read reviews on TA that Copacabana beach was dirtier than Ipanema beach —I have to disagree and also mention that I preferred Copacabana's to Ipanema's beach having ride to Ipanema via Segway Bikes it appeared to be overcrowded and fussier.

Anyhow, Porto Bay hotel was/is a really welcoming hotel with excellent customer service and attentive staff. The hotel is somewhat plain/bland in it's design but it has so much key qualities; like the panoramic view rooms, breakfast restaurant view and food options, the pool area view and lounge, free fitness centre with breathtaking view, spa/sauna facilities, private taxis etc.

The hotel has well spoken English staff, and they quickly begin to remember their guests by name or room number —that additional attention.

If you intend on booking an excursion, then consider Portobay's as they offer many tours at really good prices with everything included from transportation to food and tickets.

Overall this hotel accommodates to the needs of guests in an exceptional way, they really go above and beyond to assist you and to ensure your stay is pleasant with them. We had an amazing time at this hotel and exciting experience in Rio De Janeiro.
