“For me it is the only place to stay in Copacabana”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2012

I thought I would share my recent trip for those traveling to Brazil especially for the World Cup or the Olympics. We were there over the New Years holiday so a very busy time of year.

First and foremost, Brazil has changed considerably and the crime rate seems to be under control. You can now walk around Rio and take public transportation like most major cities. Be cautious when using a cash machine, we used an HSBC machine, the company we use at home. The card number and code were stolen from the machine and used. We did not have to pay for the other withdrawals since they occurred after we returned home, but it is something to deal with and it is unsettling.

The hotel of choice, for me the only place to stay, is the Copacabana Palace. Truth be told, I have a soft spot for old established hotels. They offer the glamour and services that were more common of days gone by. The location is perfect and the service is impeccable. The staff is young, vibrant and they smile warmly. The entryway or reception area is busy and bustling, a friendly environment with old-world charm and class. Checking in is a breeze and your luggage is whisked to your room.

The property is extremely comfortable with a well-polished staff so they can offer all the services one appreciates when on vacation. Fresh flowers are everywhere. When you open your room door you are greeted with taste and a sense of coziness that allows you to feel at home. The room and bathroom are large and well-appointed, closets and draws galore.

The hotel spa and gym are outstanding. Snacks, fresh water, robes and flip-flops are at your disposal to ensure comfort before, during, and after your work out. Staff is on hand to assist in setting up spa treatments, dance lessons or a personal coach. There is a relaxing room where you can calmly drift and relieve stress after a steam or sauna. Everything was clean and designed to create welcoming environments.

Walk around inside the hotel and the annex to appreciate the its history and glory. Play a game of tennis on the roof court.

The huge pool is an amazing haven to escape the city’s commotion or to enjoy a relaxing meal. Attendants are available to insure your comfort and the clear blue water is inviting.

You should not miss the experience of beach life in Rio. Once you cross the six lanes of traffic and all the excitement that passes in front of the hotel, you will be well attended too when relaxing in the Hotel’s private beach section. You are served cold water and chilled, sweet tropical, fresh fruit while relaxing under a white and blue umbrella shading you from the strong sun. You can even get a soothing massage, which I recommend. The beach can be crowded; vendors will approach you with their wears. You can buy their souvenirs as you forget about life. People do not always remove their garbage so the beach in general is not pristine even though it is cleaned. I am hoping that this will be addressed and changed.

We used the hotel cars to take us on city sightseeing trips. The luxurious cars are comfortable and the local drivers are informative. Sometimes we were taken to see little out of the way nooks to experience something we would have missed on our own. The hotel has standard pricing and can assist you in mapping out a day’s adventure.

We had two minor glitches during our ten-day stay and mentioned them to the hotel more out of a courtesy so they could address and prevent reoccurrence. Guest relations apologized by sending chocolates with a bottle of cold Champagne to our room, something we certainly did not expect. A applauded them with a huge BRAVO for their concern to insure quality and a willingness to be the best.

The concierge staff is knowledgeable and facilitates ones needs. There are many restaurants in walking distance from the hotel but rely on the Concierge to insure that you will get a good meal. Otherwise you could end up hungry. Explore some of the local juice bars and their homemade snacks. Do not be afraid to experience the wonders of this amazing city and the warmth exuded from its people.

Restaurants not to miss, ask the Concierge to make your reservations, they are popular spots: Satyricon (seafood) – Rua Barao da Torre 192, Ipanema. Carlota (Brazilian) Dias Ferreira, 64 - Leblon. Bazzar (fusion) R Barao da Torre, 538 – Ipanema. Brassierie Rosario (lunch when visiting the old center or for coffee and wonderful desserts) Rua do Rosario, 34 - Centro. La Fiducia Café - (for baked goods and coffee or a light lunch – it is just around the corner from Copacabana Palace) Rua Duvivier, 12, they also have a restaurant across the street. Celeiro (salad lighter type lunch) Dias Ferreira, 199 - Leblon.

The only way it could be better was if it moved to Ipanema, since it won't happen, it fights The Fasano for the post of best 5* in the city. Classical, charming, grand, full of tradition, excellent swimming pool, it won't disapoint you in any way. The main building will star it's renovation soon, but the side one has even better rooms and great views. I was upgraded to a suite facing the pool and the beach, which was really great. Breakfast is the best in town! You have to try it at least once.

So after spending a few nights at a hotel down the other end of Copacabana which was terrible we decided to treat ourselves to a few nights here so we can feel normal again (and also shower without holding our noses to avoid the sewer stench). We are on a tour around South America and whilst it has been amazing the choice of Rio hotels has been under par. Whilst the Palace is 3x the price of our tour hotel it is 100x more luxurious. We got a beach view room newly renovated and I cried upon entering it. Everything is amazing. So worth the cost and wish I had booked a few more nights. Wonderful view, shower and new bath, lots of products to use. Feel like a new person. Service is also friendly and everyone speaks english. Pool area whilst not resort style is more than adequate. Short wander across the road and you are on the beach!!! Coming from AUD we are used to paying a lot of money for hotel food and supermarket food. So whilst I am sure the restaurant prices are 'expensive' they would still be considered cheaper than if you were is Australia. Supermarkets are on the street back from the hotel and we brought some wine and drinks for the room rather than use the mini bar. Breakfast is very South American. Lots of breads, pastries, fruit. Plenty to eat. Some hot food but nothing fantastic. Love love love this hotel. It is well priced but compared to some of the other 'well priced 3*' accommodation in copa you get what you pay for here.

Great location, great rooms and food, nice pool. Huge bathrooms and great shower, complimentary havaianas. Obviously the place is very expensive, but worths every penny. Heads up, the best beach now its not copacabana. Its ipanema. (about 15 reais taxi ride, 10 minutes from the hotel) posto 9 is the one you are looking for.

I just returned from a week at the Copacabana Palace in Rio and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Highlights:

Pool: great service, especially Nolan who was attentive and kept the cocktails flowing. it is open 24 hours and is kept at a very comfortable temperature. The only downfall is that it loses sun exposure by 2:00 in the afternoon

Rooms: we had a suite and it was very spacious, with a large separate sitting room and two balconies. The bed was comfortable, with a heavy duvet. Nice toiletries and the maid service was impeccable.

Beach: chair service at the beach, right across the street

Food: Poolside bar served delicious food, only downfall was very slow service and the waitstaff seemed confused half the time. The buffet in the restaurant was delicious but very expensive.

All in all, a great stay and I would return in a heartbeat.

The hotel has a very attractive exterior unlike the majority of other hotels which occupy the beach front. It sits in a great location at Copacabana Beach and is well placed for the sights of Rio. Our junior suite was vast and well equipped. The breakfast buffet was fabulous, charged at around £30 pp though our 5 year old went free. The pool area is pleasant though at busy periods such as during our visit the sun loungers were crammed in and pool service was found wanting. Aside from that service was good all round. We dined at the smart restaurant Cipriani, the food was good but not thrilling and the restaurant itself didn't feel particularly special, perhaps as we had passed through it several times daily en route to our room and the bar attached is a dreary affair. The trendy night time bar, Bar Copa charges a hefty entrance fee which feels a bit of a cheek when you are staying at the hotel. All in all a good base for Rio but it hasn't entered my list of fab hotels of the World.
