Treated ourselves at the end of our South American holiday with two days at the Copacabana Palace. We booked a suite in the new wing with ocean views - it was definitely worth the extra charge. The room was sumptuous. Breakfast was included in the price and was excellent. We found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. We really lashed out on our last night with dinner in the Cipriani restaurant - it was wonderful. After previously staying at Leblon, which was clean and safe with plenty of restaurants, we found the Copacabana district to be really disappointing. While the beach was fine, the rest of the area was grubby and run down with very little to offer. After venturing out for one walk into the surrounding streets during the day, we did not feel totally safe and decided to stick to the beach and the hotel - which, lets face it, was no hardship. Worth doing once - the hotel is truly superb, but next time in Rio, we will stick with Leblon.

I stayed at the copacababna palace with my boyfriend sept 06 for 5 nights. The Hotel was grand and as expected really! After reading reviews about breakfast I knew what to expect, found the service ok, and the food got very boring by the end of the week!!
The weather was terrible so we had little to do, found the hotel freezing and very boring nothing at all to do! Maybe we stayed in the wrong place for our tastes!
We didnt get the chance to check out the other hotels so we can't compare!
Although I would go back, not for a week maybe 2 days or so!

Spent three nights at the Copacabana Palace in Rio the first weekend of July 2007. I'm a New Yorker who grew up in Brazil and visit regularly. The Copa is simply unmatched anywhere else in Brazil and a total indulgence. Service is impeccable and balances between inobtrusive and genuinely helpful -- they handled several special requests without pause. It seems the entire staff speaks at least some English, for those who don't speak any Portuguese. Location is unbeatable in the upper middle of Copacabana Beach. Security is discretely everpresent.

The original building (from 1920s) is in great shape inside and out. We were upgraded to an ocean view room with a blacony on the fifth floor. The room was very spacious and the all-marble bathroom was large and modern. The original building has six floors, the fifth being "executive" with special guest services and the sixth being "VIP" suites, with a private pool on the roof. There also is an annex building with maybe 10-12 floors, and it appeared that most/all had balconies facing the ocean.

The social scene revolves around the main pool, and the hotel offers service on the beach as well. In our 3 days, we saw several American and Brazilian celebrities on the property, and after over 80 years this hotel still retains its role as "the" destination hotel. There is a special touch at every turn, and the indulgence is in the details, such as the cool handtowels scented with citrus handed out pool-side.

Bottom line is that the Copacabana Palace retains its splendor, glamor and old-world service and charm, which is a welcome break from the globalization of trendy boutique hotels. This property definitely deserves its membership in the "Leading Hotels of the World", and is worth every penny.

This is a beautiful facility in very close proximity to Copacabana beach. The staff is eager to please & attentive.

However, the location has become undesirable. Ipanema is a vastly better beach, and restaurants, bars and shopping tend to be concentrated there, while Copacabana has become somewhat downscale and crime-ridden.

First it was the pounding music at 1:00 a.m. from the wedding party three floors below. OK, it was Friday night, but I was paying over $300 for the room (least expensive room). A call to the front desk produced, "we will tell them to turn down the music." Certainly there are weddings or parties there every weekend, and certainly they get complaints from clients every weekend. Twenty minutes later, still loud music. I went down to the front desk and politely asked them to please move me to another hotel. Suddenly, in the 'sold out' hotel, a room became available. They 'upgraded' me to a bigger room. This room was lovely and bigger, but it was next to the plumbing pipes for the entire hotel, so different, quieter noise, but still unacceptable.

I was not informed that breakfast was NOT included (depends on the deal you've signed up for), so the first day I took part in the below mediocre huge breakfast buffet and had to pay 30 usd for tastes of bad fruit (!), packaged bread products, and a soso cup of tea.

I can imagine in the olden days it must have been a classy place, but those days are long gone.

We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our ten day stay at the Copa and I cannot believe some of the previous comments about the patchy service. Our room was beautiful and well worth the extra to have an ocean view. The staff at the Copa are all very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The housekeeping service was extremely efficient and our room was kept immaculately .The main asset of the Copa however is the staff as they manage to be incredibly friendly and welcoming without being intrusive and one has the impression that they love their jobs and are very proud to work there. Not all speak excellent English, Raphael at the front desk and Felipe of Guest services being two notable and very efficient exceptions but they are all ready with a smile and a greeting at all times. We were a bit worried about Rio's reputation for violence but saw no evidence of this at all and were quite happy to walk round during the day.We did get taxis at night and they are amazingly cheap and perfectly comfortable. Many cariocas in the shops speak very little English but they are very friendly and do their best to help out. I could go on for ages..the amazing breakfasts, the Easter buffet etc etc but suffice it to say we are planning to return as soon as possible !

Really enjoyed our time here. The food was excellent, if a little expensive. The pool was great, and pool service was beyond reproach. Good restaurant recommendations from concierge too. We had a couple of instances where the service really wasn't as good as a hotel of this category should provide. Over a 2 hour period they promised us several times our bags were on the way up....and they weren't. Restaurant service was patchy. They didn't remove side plates with half eaten crab claws (a starter) duringfthe main course. Didn't ask whether we wanted drinks when we ordered food. I know this sounds fussy, but this place isn't cheap!
