I stayed at Portinari in August 2004 and had a good impression, that's why I'd like to visit it again. Unfortunately, the hotel is more and more decadent. From the reservation procedures to the little details (towels really old!), everything reveals that the once "first design hotel in Rio" is just an overpriced 3 stars accomodation. I had reserved a room in the 11th floor but in my arrival, was informed that that room was not available and they are giving us a "better" room... that was nothing more that the same level room (it was NOT an upgrade to compensate their mistake in reservation), but a smoker one (I had reserved a non smokers one, in a non smokers floor, any doubt about that I Don't like cigar?? ) in the 4th floor, that was really noisy.
The "spa" is poor, with no attendant at all and open to the "fitness area". It was a cool day (22 degrees Celcius) and water in the little jacuzzi was cold. Sauna is with no scents, so the smell is aufull. No place to put towels or cltohes. No intimacy at all.
It is expensive for the services they are offering.

We stayed at the Portinari for 3 nights early november, the weather was hot and damp, the first thing you notice is that the aircon is very weak and you have to let a key card at the room switch otherwise it will turn off when you leave the room, then you will find a real oven when you return to your room...

We were staying on the 11th floor and the window is so thin we could here all the noise from the street all night long, they should improove noise insulation urgently!

The room door lets all the light from the hall, and a very strong one come in to the room, if you are like me light sensitive, avoid it! I had to use toilet paper everynight to put in the door opened spaces to
shut the ligh down!!!

On the good side, location is great, although not with sea view. From there you can walk safely to Copacabana or to Ipanema, just choose (Ipanema is best!). Breakfast is fair with fresh fruit and natural juices. They gave us free drinks on arrival wich is nice!

Best of all, I think this hotel lives on its staff. Everyone is polite, friendly, helpfull - despite all the problems of the hotel they achieve to make you think you would return there!

I was a little disappointed by this hotel at the end of a two week trip around Brazil. The rooms are a reasonable size and clean but abit basic. Some of the finer detailing was poor due to a less than acceptable standard of workmanship. We had a room on the 12th floor but could still hear the traffic noise below. The breakfast was excellent both food and service. We were charged $3 a night for the safe and had to pay for the internet which is abit much considering the rate to stay here. Worst of all was when friends travelling with us borrowed an umbrella from the hotel and left it in an umbrella stand at another hotel, then tried to retrieve it but someone else and taken it by mistake. They informed the hotel and were told that they would be charged 50-60 reals if they didn't get it back (alot for an umbrella). Despite telling them which hotel it was lost at it was left up to our rep to chase up the umbrella and then along with our friends we went and collected it when it turned up at the other hotel. I wasn't impressed especially since it wasn't a designer umbrella with the hotel's logo on.

Excellent Hotel.
Rooms and bathrooms very nicely appointed and new.

Excellent breakfast and very helpful english speaking reception staff.

Some people have commented that it has a poor location but we really liked the neighbourhood as we felt it was safer than other parts of Copacabana which were more touristy and therefore more expensive and more dangerous. It's only 50m from the beach and the the neighbourhood is full of friendly locals going about their business. It's also well located for public transport and local value restaurants.

The only criticism is that one of the more senoir bellboys tries to push you into one of his greatly overpriced taxis when you leave the hotel- just say no - he is on 30% commission and the local metered taxis are safe.

The Portinari is a good boutique hotel located in Copabana, one block from the beach, and really close to Ipanema (approximately 4 blocks).
We had a room at the seventh floor. The room wasn’t really big, but was enough for what we were looking for. It has a really cozy and warm bed; I loved the sheets and the pillows.
The buffet breakfast was really good, with a lot of different options. The staff was great, and they will help you with any doubt you could have about the city, restaurants or nightclubs.
I’m sure I’d return to the Portinari Hotel if I ever return to Rio, because the experience was really good, and the price was average when you compare it with some others less quality hotels in the city.

Finding a good hotel in Rio can be challenging. We want a good location and modern amenities at a reasonable price. We have stayed at Hotel Debret in Copacabana, the Rio Flat Service in Leblon and Hotel Paysandu in Flamengo before. There are always of course, the Meridien, Sofitel, Marriott, Cesar Park and Copacabana Palace. Many high end hotels are overpriced at above 300-400 USD and most between the range of 150-250 USD are outdated. We like Rio Internacional for its value, but were curious to try a different hotel this time.

Portinari Design hotel has a very friendly and helpful staff, from the reception desk to the doorman. Our request for a very early check in (9 AM) was accomodated graciously. Guests can choose the floor they like to stay; every floor boasts a different design. We chose the 12th floor since we wanted the highest floor for panoramic reason.

The hotel is situated near Posto 6 on Rua Fransisco Sa, a mere 1/2 block from the main beachfront avenue, Avenida Atlantica. It does not have a direct ocean view, however. Those who must have a direct view will be disappointed. We like the location because it is very convenient to Ipanema (close to "Joaquim e Manoel" for seafood, "Sindicato do Chopp" for draft beer - both in Copacabana and "Casa da Feijoada" on Praca General Osorio for typical Brazilian fare), and is served by the new metro service (nearest station is Cantagalo, can take the bus line if you buy a combination ticket for "superificie", the hotel is the next stop on the Ipanema route). For first timers, it is also convenient to walk to the open air art market set up nightly across from Posto 6 in Copacabana and the Hippie Fair in Ipanema on weekends.

The room has interesting design features. We especially like the bathroom with ample shower space. The lighting is a bit dim overall, and the room smells of cigarette (we did not specify for a non-smoking room). We did not complain since it was not too bothersome, and we realize that given our early check in and the small size of the hotel, availability may be limited. The door is not soundproof and the floor is not carpeted, but we did not encounter noise problems. The wall AC unit is not very strong, but it was comfortable enough.

Breakfast was excellent like in most hotels in Rio with sumptuous array of pastries and fresh fruit. The room is stunning with plenty of sunlight and the staff very attentive and courteous. There is a small gym with jacuzzi/sauna on the top floor where one can treadmill overlooking the Atlantic ocean albeit sideways. We found the internet service adequate.

Overall, we have a pleasant stay and would return again if able to secure a roomrate around USD 150 (300 Reais) like we did this time. We would not pay more than USD 200 for a hotel this calibre, even in Copacabana.

I stayed three nights at the Portinari, two different times so two different rooms. The rooms are functional if a bit small, bathrooms are fine. Each floor has a different "design" (see the actual name of the hotel). The views are ok - if you bend your head you can see the ocean - but it is literally only a block away from the hustle and bustle of Copacabana beach. The staff are friendly but their English is not the best. You can get your point across, however, and they do their best to give you suggestions and help you find your way around the city. Good value for the location, but if you're looking for something a bit more upscale, this probably isn't your place. Very international crowd.
