“Almost Perfection in Paradise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2010

After a 7-day cruise, we stayed at this hotel in Rio for two nights. They were extremely accomodating with early check-in based on availability, and they let us keep one of our 4 rooms until 2pm for late check out---no charge.
The doormen were always courteous and helpful. The breakfast buffet was excellent. And the location, only 1/2 block from one of the top spots on Copacabana! Value was great!

I stayed here for 3 nights with my family. The hotel was spotlessly clean, the room perfectly adequate, and the location was convenient for sightseeing. It is set two blocks back from the beach, surrounded by car rental agencies on the busy main road just out of the tunnel from the city into Copacabana. Not terribly scenic, but the beach is a short walk away, and there are supermarkets and drugstores just behind the hotel for all essentials. The area is not super-safe, so probably best to take taxis everywhere after dark. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. I'd stay there again.

The Excelsior is just on the Atlantic Avenue with a fantastic rooftop swimming pool area from where you see Copacabana, the Christ statue and the sugar loaf. The rooms are comfortable modern with noise reducing windows. I would recommend this hotel for any visitor in Rio de Janeiro looking for clean modern and comfortable rooms and good relaxing areas.

Our first impressions of this hotel were very good , a very large & grand lobby, we thought we had made a great choice when booking this hotel.
But on arriving at our rooms how dissapointed we were a find a room that looked more like a large closet than a double room.
We had two large suitcases with us and nowhere to put them other than leave them on the floor.
Lighting was very bad in the rooms , could not leave the curtains open as we were about 15 feet from an apartment block & and you could see directly into to rooms opposite.
Walls were very thin could hear people coming & going all through the night and then the catering staff started work at about 5 a.m.and were preparing breakfast , we could hear them shouting at each other and moving trollies about.
Having said that the breakfast was excellent, the only good thing about the hotel.
The area around the hotel left a lot to be desired , it is run down and groups of people hanging around once it got dark around 5 p.m.
We didn't feel safe walking around after dark, we were told by hotel staff that is was better if we did not venture out after dark and if we had to they would order an official taxi to bring us to and from our venue.
This is not the type of holiday you could enjoy looking over your shoulder all the time when outside.
Lets hope they clean up the city & the hotels before the world cup & olympic games arrive.

This is a modern 14 storey hotel just one block away from Copacabana beach. There are local shops for water etc within a few minutes walk of the hotel and an ATM just over the road at HSBC Bank. The hotel is clean and offers a good breakfast buffet. Staff seem friendly and helpful. The dinner buffet and a la carte are nothing special for the price. Try Gula Gula restaurant in Ipanema for good food, or Arab on the promenade at Copacabana. The rooms are very small with little space to move around in especially with two large suit cases - they are OK for a couple of nights, but one would need more space if staying longer. Bathrooms though were more than adequate

This was one of the designated "conference" hotels so we stayed there with other participants. Otherwise Ipanema is the much better location. The room was spotless, breakfast was great and the staff very helpful. We enjoyed the good caipirinhas at the roof top bar. We booked through http://www.brazilianvacation.com and got better rates than the conference offered.

We had a great time at this hotel. The rooms were clean, the staff were friendly (although we did catch one of them just pretending to understand what we were saying when we spoke English).

Many people have commented about the lack of net curtains, but I can only assume they didn't notice the windows are mirrored so you're pretty much invisible! The black out blinds were great for napping after the carnival all night.

Breakfast was a great selection with attentive waiters and the pool on the roof is small, but perfectly formed with a nice quiet bar to unwind after a long day sightseeing. The beach is only a short walk away , there are a number of nearby restaurants and a metro station. Bring comfortable shoes as walking really is the best way to see the city.
