Praia Ipanema Hotel

Reviewed 1 April 2011

The Praia Ipanema is located directly at Ipanema beach at the border to Leblon. The Leblon shopping mall and the main shopping street in Ipanema are within walking distance.
The rooms are quite old furnished and styled. Everything seems to be old need some renovations.
The bar on the rooftop offers a great view above the beaches. The pool on the rooftop is rather small and only for joking and not for swimming, but there also some deckchairs for relaxing.
The personal is sometimes really crazy. The first time we have tried to stay there we had a confirmed reservation. They couldn't find them and after 1/2h waiting and penetrate asking from us we got told: no rooms available, no sorry.
The second time, they had our reservation, but we received different exchange rates within 10 minutes from different persons.
Strange thing: They are asking 2 USD/day to use the room safe and the door boy needs to come to your room to activate it.
Very good location, but there are other hotels with more friendly service and nicer rooms around.

We stayed at this hotel for four nights in March of 2011, with my sister and my brother-in-law occupying a second room. The hotel had been booked by our tour organizers and was the biggest disappointment of our trip.
The hotel is beautifully located fronting Ipanema Beach with a breathtaking view. Unfortunately, during our stay there, a temporary volleyball stadium had been constructed on the beach directly across the street from our hotel. The noise from the loudspeaker system in the stadium significantly detracted from our stay. And “music” from live bands (and state-of-the-art car stereos) along the beach reverberated late into the evenings.
As we entered into the hotel, it was clear that every attempt would be made by the hotel staff to separate us from our money. Even though we own state of the art suitcases with wheels and prefer to transport our bags ourselves, the bellhops fought us for our bags instead of requesting if we required assistance. We prefer to have the option of utilizing a bellhop service or transporting our bags ourselves. That option was hotly contested.
The hotel lobby was quite presentable, but when checking in we are surprised to find that using the safe in our room would cost us the equivalent of $2.00 per day. Given Rio’s reputation for theft this amounted to a compulsory and petty surcharge. We were also advised that the hotel charged for Internet, which is complementary in most hotels. They had an obvious milk-the-tourist policy.
The room which was assigned to us was relatively spacious. It was sparsely decorated with institutional gray paint and tiled floors. It became clear to us immediately that the hotel permitted smoking and we were assigned a smoking room as evidenced by the presence of an ashtray, even though we had booked non-smoking rooms months earlier. The smoke from the adjacent occupants permeated through the common door to our room. In the room occupied by my sister and brother-in-law, the smoke came in through the balcony door, which, like ours, would not close or lock properly.
The T.V. from the adjoining room blared when used. Part of the problem was that Brazilian T.V. channels have inconsistent volume levels but there was no escaping the fact that the walls were poorly insulated. The door to our balcony was broken and did not lock. When we contacted the front desk, they sent up a maintenance service representative who could not repair it. The same problem occurred in the room occupied by my sister and brother-in-law. Our attempts to obtain alternative rooms were vetoed by the manager even though we were advised by the desk clerk that alternative rooms were available.
The air conditioning controls appeared to indicate that variable settings were available. However, the system was either a "on" or "off". The variable settings did not function. The walls of the room and the glass balcony doors were dirty and obviously had not been cleaned for some time. Paint was peeling around the window frame and the balcony door. There was only one wastebasket available, namely in the bathroom. Although the floors were titled, slippers were available only to purchase at a price of approximately $20 instead of being complementary as in most hotels. The "turn-down of bedding" in the late afternoon consisted of the cleaning staff throwing a couple of chocolates onto the bed.
In my brother-in-law’s room, the dresser drawers were unusable because they had an odour of mould or mildew
The sink in the bathroom drained slowly and did not drain at all if the shower was being used. The shower head was ancient and sprayed water in every direction. The towels, floor mat and drinking glasses in the bathroom were not changed daily. The cardboard coasters for the glasses had stuck to the bathroom counter after the first day as the counter was not cleaned daily. We had to request the cleaning staff to provide us with sufficient toilet paper. No tissues were available in the bathroom.
The breakfast buffet had a fair amount of choices however, the “hot food" was usually cold and all of the fruit juices were tasteless leaving the impression that they had been severely watered down.
One afternoon during our stay as we were leaving the hotel, we were obliged to report to the staff that the smell of excrement had been permeating the hallway of our floor for some time. What was surprising was that the cleaning staff had not noticed this odour.
One positive feature of the hotel was that one of the desk clerks assisted graciously us in obtaining some dinner reservations and making some restaurant recommendations. However, this was a diamond in a mountain of glass.

I stayed in two periods on this hotel in March and I must say this is the best hotel I have stayed in on my trips to Rio so far. I got a nice deal at 400 Reais a night during the carneval. If you pay more you are probably getting ripped off... The top floors of this hotel has large nice and quiet rooms with views of ipanema and the ocean. The quiet minibar has a price point that make you want to use it! Light proof curtains and a big comfortable bed. Internet is available through cable only in the room at 40 reais, this is unacceptably bad in 2011..Wifi for your i-pads and phones is available for free in the lounge on A floor. Acceptable but not top notch breakfast. Swimmingpool, poolbar, sauna and a tiny gym on the roof with nice views over ipanema. The location of the hotel is very good, next to ipanema beach between Ipanema and Leblon.

Low points: check in took too long, Hotel restaurant is good for breakfast but nothing else, the bar in the first floor is really useless other than for waiting. (But there is a nice british pub just around the corner). If you plan to party consider a hotel closer to Farme de Amoedo as the walk is quite long, on the other hand taxi is not expensive.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room with ocean view!

First of all, don't listen to all the negative reviews. My wife and I stayed in a Deluxe Oceanfront Room with a balcony for the "Carnival." I don't know what people expect, but this is as good as it gets in Rio. Cococabana is extremely run down and everything goes on in Ipanema anyway. No, its not the Hyatt or JW Marriott, but those come with a cost! You won't find a better view than this anywhere in Rio. Domenica in reservations went above and beyond her duties to make our trip extra special. The breakfast was fantastic, so make sure to enjoy it on the top floor with a view to die for. The pool area is small, but very nice and cozy! There are great restaurants every where. Try a steakhouse with (20) different types of meat or the Lagoa restaurant. You should plan on attending the Carnival, as it is the greatest party in the world. It is a must see in your lifetime event. So, plan your trip to Praia Ipanema and make the best of it. If you get a chance, head down to the Iguazzu Falls on the Argentina/Brazil border. It is by far the most beautiful place in the world!

It's a great hotel! for those who visit Rio for the first time. The hotel it's located in Ipanema in front of the 'calçadão'. Two minutes from the beach. it's what i call a sleeping hotel. If you are in Rio the Janeiro, you won't want to stay in the hotel, trust me. If you are planning this hotel for your vacations, make sure to ask the room with view over the sea.
The rooms don't have anything special, but are very cozy, the gym almost doesn't exist. The restaurant is good, but it's better to eat outside.
Must see the view in the roof top.

The location and views are amazing, the breakfast was great and the staff polite. Rooms are old with a superficial upgrade, but are fine. The question is - Why are the housecleaning standards low? White gunk on the pillows, red stains (wine) on white blankets, sand in sheets, hair in bathroom... Not really acceptable given prices and rating.

The hotel is old and needs a generel update...

The top terrace has a nice view of Ipanema and Leblon beaches. The umbrellas are not big enough.

The hotel is not value for money...
