“Would stay here again”
Reviewed 2 December 2012

Hotel was recommended by a friend and it didn't disappoint, especially after 10 days of staying in pousadas across Brazil. All staff spoke English and were helpful. Room was decent size, clean and modern looking with a wooden floor. There was a safe as well as free wi-fi with good reception in the room. Breakfast selection was good. The hotel is in a good location in Ipanema, 5min walk from the beach and on the main shopping street with lots of interesting shops and restaurants nearby.

After spending 5 days in Rio we were glad we stayed in Ipanema, we thought it was the best area to be in. The nearest metro is a bit of a trek (15-20 min walk) but taxis are relatively cheap. We were on the 7th floor but it could still get quite noisy from the street, I wouldn't want to be in a room in the lower floors

Dear guest,

On behalf of our staff at Mar Ipanema Hotel, I would like to thank you so much for such an amazing review! It makes us all so happy to know that you had such an amazing time at our property and at our city! I have to agree with you about our incredible location and wonderful restaurant/bar, Armazém Devassa, which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night drinks. It is a very typical "carioca" brewery and meeting point for locals and tourists in town. The breakfast itself offers a wide variety of tropical fruits, breads, hot dishes and Brazilian delicacies.
Regarding your observation concerning the metro, please notice that the local government is building a new metro station only two blocks away from our hotel!
About the noise, since our hotel is located at a very trendy and popular place, indeed some guests could find it to be noisy sometimes, however, since all rooms are equipped double glazed windows, this noise is drastically diminished. Nonetheless, you would be glad to know that we are currently installing new soundproof windows in all rooms, so as to eliminate any noises arising from outside.
Again, thank you so much for your compliments about our staff! I will personally congratulate them for your praise.
Thank you so much, and we truly hope to see you back soon!

Sincerely,
Amanda Abreu - Sales Manager

Mar Ipanema is clean, modern and with a fantastic location, right in the heart of Ipanema, 2 blocks from the best beach spot. I would definitely recommend this to any family or friend going to Rio and when I return to visit Brazil, this is definitely where I will stay.

Hotels are expensive in Rio and do your money doesn't go far. This hotel offers compact but clean rooms a few blocks from the beach. Breakfast is adequate. The staff are friendly.

This hotel does has a nice personality. The lobby and reception staff were very good and great with luggage, arranging taxis, beach towels and so on. Beds were very comfortable - but you do need to bring ear plugs if you want to avoid the traffic and street noise. Hotel really could do with better noise insulation. Rooms are on the small side - I now understand that bigger rooms are available at a price so you may want to consider. Breakfasts were fine - I'd have liked a bigger choice but this would have been more expensive and the hotel is expensive enough although not as bad as the crazy prices of the beachfront hotels on Copacabana. Shower area in the bathroom was excellent and the rooms are attractively furnished - although the TVs have been placed too high up the wall to see the picture properly. The rooms aren't air conditioned - instead they have coolers that blast out cold air which isn't quite the same thing. Overall, though, a very enjoyable stay in a lovely part of town.

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs - and a travel kettle if you like a coffee in your room. You may want to select a...

Stayed five nights in a deluxe room. Pro's: In a good area with shops and restaurants, near the beach, the hotel-beachchairs you can borrow with towels and parasol, the clean rooms, breakfast reasonable. Con's: expensive for a off-beach location in one of the better parts of Rio, traffic noise, breakfast area a bit small in busy times.
Front desk staff is not bad, understand English, but could improve a lot with a kind of personal approach of their guests. They seemed not very interested, argued openly with co-workers and a smile was not common. Based on 6 weeks in 15 hotels (during 2 years) in Brazil, with this attitude they would not rank in our top-5. But why bother if you possess one of the best locations in this part of Ipanema?

Room Tip: Plus-rooms 01 and 02 have less elevator-noise.

Dear guest,

First of all I would like to thank you so much for sharing your experience at the Mar Ipanema Hotel with fellow travellers coming to Rio de Janeiro. Your feedback is very important for us to try to improve our services.
I am very glad to know that you enjoyed our prime location, as well as the free beach equipment offered by the hotel. All of our guests are more than welcome to request beach chairs, towels, and parasols at our front desk, which could save you approximately R$20/day on rentals at the beach!
I was truly disappointed though, to hear that you found our front desk staff distant. I was just answering another review (just below yours) that praised our front desk staff. I will pass your concerns to our general manager, and rest assured he will address it immediately.
Again, we are very thankful for your candid comments and we hope that you can stay with us again soon!

Best wishes,

First time in rio. We stayed here based on reviews, what we heard about Ipanema and the crazy coat of other Rio hotes. Hotel is modern, clean and safe. Brilliant location 3minutes from the beach but you won't have a view of the sea. Rooms were a good size but noisey. We were high up but could still hear traffic etc so I'd bring earplugs. Air con also wasn't great. Other than those gripes hotel was great. Staff at reception were excellent. Anderson was one of the guys and he was superb. The hotel is in the nicest part of Ipanema and also had one of the best bars. Breakfast was ok. Location of the hotel and price were huge positives. Rental bikes were also available, which is the beat way to see th beaches.

Room Tip: Th higher the better.

This hotel seemed close to everything. We were able to walk to Copacabana and the beach (Ipanema) is a small block away. The hotel was clean, wi fi free, and the breakfast was really good. We were also able to rent bikes from the hotel which was convenient and not too expensive. Rio is an expensive place, however, we felt like the price of staying at this hotel was quite high. The bed was comfortable, but it was a little strange that there were two twin comforters on a double bed. The staff was attentive and helpful.

Dear guest,

Wow! Thank you for such an amazing review!! We are so glad to hear that you had a blast at our incredible location! Indeed you can walk all over Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana, and Lagoa districts from our property. Nice tip about the bikes! Riding a bicycle through town is a perfect way to see and enjoy everything.
Since Ipanema and Leblon are the nicest neighborhoods in the city, hotels in these areas are in fact more expensive than in touristy Copacabana, for instance.
We do offer two comforters over our double beds, for the comfort of our guests.
Also, in my opinion, it makes the bed looks nice and original, and your companion won´t pull it during the night :)
Thanks again for your kind words! I hope you can come back to visit us soon!

Best wishes,
