“1st time in Rio - Awesome Experiance!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 November 2009

This was my first trip to Rio and the Orla Hotel definitely made it a good one! Booked the hotel on www.go-today.com and only cost me $539USD for 6 nights in a deluxe ocean view room. You'd be crazy not to use this site because the deals are unbeatable. They even arranged for a private car to pick us up at the airport with an English speaking guide to tell about the city on our way to the hotel!

I saw the other rooms in the hotel and they are as small as everyone says but those are the cheapest ones, the ocean front deluxe rooms are perfectly sized! The hotel sits at the end of Copacabana so your view includes the entire beach and Sugar Loaf. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable (spoke good English), and trust worthy. Left money out all the time and never once was it taken. They have safes in the room for $2USD per day but I shouldn't have gotten it. The front desk has free towels and umbrellas for you to check out and the free daily breakfast is great with many options! The pool is basically the size of a jacuzzi but why would you go there when the beach is right across the street? (Oh and I found Impenema Beach to be far nicer than Copacabana, well worth the 5min walk. The front desk can also book you tours for all the popular stuff to do here.

I found the Hotel area, and Rio in general, is very safe. Those people that got mugged as mentioned in the review below were probably fools that walked around with their bling hanging out. Rio is just like any major city, stick to the main streets and stay out of the dark alleys...common sense! I was out almost every night till about 3am and never had any sort of trouble walking back to the hotel.

I would rather stay at a hotel near Impenema Beach next time only because the sand and water is much cleaner but the Orla has the best value overall.

We stayed at Orla for 8 days and had a great experience. The rooms were really small, we had 2 twin beds which made it a tight fit, but it was very clean. Room service comes everyday at 10:30 am, but also later in the afternoon around 2ish. You do have to hange the room service tag on the door knob, which seems pretty logical. They won't come if there is nothing on the door. The front desk staff all spoke English and were friendly and helpful. The restaurant staff and bell boys were also very friendly, knowing basic English. There are so many drug stores, restaurants and supermarkets near buy if you need to buy some extra stuff or stock up on some snacks. The hotel faces Copacabana beach and is a 5 minute walk to Ipanema. The roof top has a fantastic view of the beach area, but it was too hot to spend much time there. Not sure if the hotel offers umbrellas, but would be worth asking. They hotel will provide you with complementary beach towels, just ask the front desk. Breakfast was the same everyday, but a fair bit of variety. Fruit consisted of watermelon, passion fruit, pineapple, mangoes and a mixed fruit salad with the same varieties. Croissants, buns, toast. Meat and cheese slices. French toast, crepes, banana's in syrup, scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, lemon cake, and a few more things I'm probably forgetting. They have a separate table with 5 or more different fresh fruit juices. Pretty good options in my opinion. We went everyday around 10 am and always found a table, but it was pretty busy.
It's a safe hotel with no issues of theft. I left some money on the table for the cleaning staff, and they didn't even take it. I learned later to put my tip on the bed so they understood it was for them.
Overall I had a great experience. We were not looking for a hotel with lots of extra frills, more for a place to rest and hold our stuff. We got what we paid for and had a great time in Rio.

I booked a standard double room and paid the full rate, but checked in on my own. When my partner arrived a day later at midnight the night-concierge requested an additional R$150 in cash. Unless we paid immediately my partner would not have been allowed in. At midnight in a fairly rough neighbourhood of Rio, you don't really have a choice and we paid.

On a positive, the location of the hotel between Copacabana and Ipanema is ok, but slightly dodgy. In the time I was there, two guests were mugged on separate occasions near the hotel. Next time I would definitely stay in Ipanema or Lepland - where all the super restaurants are.

The breakfast was good albeit very crowded in small space. The standard rooms are tiny and most face a narrow courtyard with a lot of venting etc. The pool and roof terrace looks great in the pictures, but is small and quite shabby. I only used it to take a couple of fantastic photos of the Copacabane, Hills and Vavelas.

They love to charge you extra through the nose. Check the prices for the nuts and nibbles on the table in the room before you eat them. Others mentioned the extra charge for the safe.

I would not recommend this place, there are much better options and locations in Rio.

We stayed here the first weekend in November. Our room was the size of a closet and the view out the window was of ductwork--but it was cheap and the location is ideal. There's a tiny pool and deck on the roof and you can get drinks up there. Breakfast is great-- lots of yummy choices-- though it can get a bit crowded between 8 and 10 and you might have to wait a few minutes. The staff is pretty helpful. Basically it's tops for everything but the room. You're in Rio--are you going to spend all day in your hotel room?

Here's the bottom line: This is, at best, a 3-star hotel. (2 1/2 stars is maybe more accurate, but you might catch a staff member in a particularly amiable mood, and that buys them an extra half-star.) We expected SLIGHTLY more from the hotel ranked "11th most popular in Rio" on TripAdvisor (at least at the time of booking), but the truth of the matter is that all the feedback provided by other posters was pretty much spot-on. I'll elaborate:

-- There are two, and only two, reasons to select this hotel: PRICE and LOCATION. It's on the far southern end of Copacabana beach, just a short walk away from Ipanema and Leblon. Relatively prime.
-- Rooms are, generally speaking, pretty awful. Ours was extremely small, dark and blessed with rock-hard bed and a view of an dark internal courtyard and an air conditioning unit. The bathroom was worse--dark, mildew/grout stains in the shower, a shower door that leaked incessantly. The (tiny) upside? The room itself was reasonably clean, and the housekeeping staff was good about cleaning and replenishing linens when we put out the doorhanger. I generally take these things for granted, but in this hotel...
-- Breakfast offers a decent selection (and reasonable quantity), but the small dining room gets EXTREMELY crowded at peak times (say, 8:30-10:00). Literally elbow-to-elbow.
-- The (all-male) desk staff is efficient, if brusque. Not many smiles or pleasantries tossed back and forth, but they answer all questions honestly and directly. We asked for restaurant recommendations on two separate evenings, and both times I felt we were sent to overpriced tourist traps for the sake of the desk clerk's commission. Not necessarily their fault, though--we knew it was happening and went along for the ride.
-- "Business Center" = Two desktops (connected to the Internet; free access) plus a printer. Served the purpose, I guess.
-- General condition/maintenance of the hotel -- a little rough around the edges. Didn't see any evidence of significant recent renovation

First of all I liked the hotel location. It is across from the beach. My room was a bit small, but for the rate I was not going to complain. Breakfast was good, but like someone said it can get crowded.
Here is the bad. I felt slighted when they wanted to charge me 4 Rials each day for using the safe, usually that is free. I was about to buy stamps at the front desk, but found that they had an 80% markup on the face value. Finally the local calls. I made a few local calls, and the rate was not per call but time. I spent 70 Rials on a 24 minute call. I felt ripped off, usually local calls are per use.
In conclusion. Stay at the hotel if you can get a good rate, but do not use any services within the hotel.
