Owner description: Gregorian chants are performed on Sundays at this Benedictine complex, which was completed in 1641 and contains a spectacular church altar.

It was raining on Sunday in Rio so we took the best choice and went to the Gregorian mass at Sao Bento. Great baroque architecture, gilt to feast your eyes, just a pity a couple of the monks seemed to sing a bit out of tune!

Very impressive for an American. We are not used to these fabulous churches as are the people in Europe and other parts of the world. The inside was breathtaking and inspiring. I am so glad I took the time to visit. Sao Bento is at the top of my list of things to see in Rio.

A little away from the city centre, but worth the uphill hike to visit it. Beautiful carvings. If you ask the monk (very nicely) he'll put the light on for 5 mins.

It's worth a half hour visit to see this jewel. If you have time, consider attending a mass when they have the monks doing Gregorian chants. We were not able to do it, but were told the relatively small church fills up quickly, so get there early.
