“Golden gem for hostel accommodation in Rio”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2014

I chose to stay at El Misti Rooms for my first trip to Rio after cross-checking the place on Hostel World and Trip Advisor. There wasn’t much online about the place but I decided to give it a try. The place turned out to be a gem.

First off, it’s easy to confuse the multiple El Misti locations in Rio and other cities in South America – it is a franchised hostel (which also means they have a brand reputation to keep up). This review is for “El Misti Rooms” in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro.

It’s an extremely clean place. I actually had trouble getting into the bathroom most days because the maid was in there scrubbing everything down so frequently, a good problem if you ask me.

It’s also very cheap. A room costs $15-$30 USD per night. I went for the 4 bed room and would recommend paying the extra few bucks to get it – it means less shuffling at night, less heat at night, increased ability to get to individually know your roommates and better storage space.

For booking four nights they offer a free airport transfer on your arrival – an amazing offer considering this place is only a hostel. My transfer took over an hour in rush hour traffic and would have cost me at least $70 BRL from a street taxi.

Breakfast is free each morning, offering plenty to fill you up before you begin your day. A chef is brought in six nights per week to cook amazing Brazilian dinners for <$20 BRL for a plate. I highly recommend the dinner chef's food.

They also have contracted with several tour groups to offer built in day trip experiences. I highly recommend the city day tour - you get transported to all the big Rio attractions for a good price with a knowledgable tour guide.

Overall I would highly recommend El Misti rooms to anyone looking for a very cheap accommodation in Rio de Janeiro.

Room Tip: The 4 bed option allowed for minimal shuffling at night and the ability to get to know all my roomma...

This is a very well run hostel! I thoroughly enjoyed my time at El Misti Rooms. Staying here was one of the best parts of my Rio experience!

The hostel is located in a safe area that is easy to get to and close to the beach, metro and major bus routes. All the staff and very kind and friendly and really want you to enjoy your stay in rio and go out of their way to ensure that! A special thank you to Santiago who gave us directions to and suggestions for anything and everything we were trying to find and made sure we knew how to get there! He was really an attentive employee and we appreciated that!

We really liked that the hostel gave daily suggestions for places to go at night and offered dinner most nights! Some of the best food we had in rio was at el misti!! So we would recommend staying for dinner :)

Some areas for improvement:
Bathrooms- they are tiny, there always seemed to be something wrong with the toilets (2nd floor) and is due for some renovation. Multiple people using such a small bathroom made it get dirty fast!
Tijuca forest tour offered- not good value for your money, you're driven up a hill, do a 15-20m hike to a waterfall,
Driven to the top and that's it. We felt kind of ripped off. If you included botanical gardens then it would be better value.

Overall, It was a great time!!! Your staff are really outstanding

I booked for one week at Misti Rooms in Copacabana and it was enough to say it was one of the best hostels i've stayed in. I've been travelling for over a year and a half through the States and latin america, and never felt the way i feel at Misti Rooms.
You have a staff from all around the world (argentina, brazil, venezuela, etc) that really makes you feel like home... they offer a homemade dinner (leo's masterpiece it's pasta), the greatest capirinhas ever (eventhough Fer -the barman- is Argentinean, he def. knows how to shake it!), Fiore and Marce (the Misti beautys or "gatinhas", as the say) are always helping everybody with the "must-do-in-rio-activities" and party night life! Santiago is the most hilarious reception guy i've ever met, he is CRAZY!
About the hostel, i love this relax-surfer style, its really very clean all day, you have air cond. in all the rooms and a complete breakfast. The wi-fi conecction is great (not easy to get in Rio), the rooms are big enough with lokers for your stuff and the best thing is you get to know everybody at the common areas!

Room Tip: the shared 4 bedroom in the 1st floor!

Rooms were pretty small, but overall a really nice atmosphere. Staff always very helpful and knowledgeable and the lounge area is nice.

It is perfectly situated near Copacabana and right by a tube station. When getting a taxi there initially, the road it is on is very small so might not be known. You'd need to direct them to the intersection of the opposite road.
