“Stayed here for 3 weeks”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

Great helpful staff, excellent location in a safe part of Rio. Very sociable hostel with a place to hang out and meet other travellers and share a drink or 3. Also provided decent meals and caipirinhas at a reasonable price in the evening. I stayed for 3 weeks during the World Cup and had a great time.

in a safe area, closet beach and metro station. Great atmosphere (was there for the world cup), breakfast decent, young friendly staff, optional organised tours during the day and nightlife suggestions. optional cooked lunch and dinner provided at extra cost, which adds to the good social setting. Small hostel so rooms and common areas very crowded (was there for the world cup),tip: 12 bed dorms actually have more floor space than the 6 bed ones and actually slept relatively well in the 12 bed one. Kitchen small, basic and average cleanliness, toilets had a couple of issues.
overall had a really fun time. n

There are about 5 different different El Misti locations in Copacabana so if you get a taxi home then make sure you're being taken to the correct one. The hostel offers an airport pickup service so I took that option rather than taking a taxi.

Onto the hostel itself and the staff are all friendly and helpful with booking things like the airport transport and tours that they offer. Its clean and it is only a 10 minute stroll to the the Copacabana beachfront and there is a good supermarket close by. Wifi is sometimes intermittent.

Rooms are a reasonable size although I found the space between bunks to be quite cramped, it is difficult to sit up properly if you are in bunk 1 or 2 even for someone as small as myself (im only about 5ft 6), however this is not much problem for me but maybe if you are tall. The only slight problem I have is that bunks can be as high as 3 beds and the very top bunk does not have anything to stop you rolling off and this made me a bit paranoid (mainly because I've seen it happen before) so I spent the first night hugging the wall, thankfully someone moved out the next day and I was able to switch to the middle bunk.
There are large lockers under the beds to store your luggage (bring own lock) and there are also small personal lockers downstairs where you can store your valuables (key provided).

The main way this hostel could improve is maybe (if possible) get a separate room where you can store luggage when you are leaving rather than there being a huge pile of backpacks in the way by the reception desk as sometimes it makes it difficult to get stuff out the personal lockers.

Room Tip: If boxxy rooms bother you, ask for a room on the outside of the building where there are windows (al...

The staff is very friendly, everybody is working in improving the hostel (renovating & cleaning).

There is also a huge breakfast with fresh eggs and lots of possibilities to choose.

There are many bathrooms to use which is very good and the bathrooms are cleaned several times a day.

In the evening they are preparing dinner where you can write yourself in a list ( for about 5€).

Overall, I really enjoyed the stay in the hostel and cannot complain at all.

Btw - they have a free pick up service at the airport !

I chose to stay at El Misti Rooms for my first trip to Rio after cross-checking the place on Hostel World and Trip Advisor. There wasn’t much online about the place but I decided to give it a try. The place turned out to be a gem.

First off, it’s easy to confuse the multiple El Misti locations in Rio and other cities in South America – it is a franchised hostel (which also means they have a brand reputation to keep up). This review is for “El Misti Rooms” in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro.

It’s an extremely clean place. I actually had trouble getting into the bathroom most days because the maid was in there scrubbing everything down so frequently, a good problem if you ask me.

It’s also very cheap. A room costs $15-$30 USD per night. I went for the 4 bed room and would recommend paying the extra few bucks to get it – it means less shuffling at night, less heat at night, increased ability to get to individually know your roommates and better storage space.

For booking four nights they offer a free airport transfer on your arrival – an amazing offer considering this place is only a hostel. My transfer took over an hour in rush hour traffic and would have cost me at least $70 BRL from a street taxi.

Breakfast is free each morning, offering plenty to fill you up before you begin your day. A chef is brought in six nights per week to cook amazing Brazilian dinners for <$20 BRL for a plate. I highly recommend the dinner chef's food.

They also have contracted with several tour groups to offer built in day trip experiences. I highly recommend the city day tour - you get transported to all the big Rio attractions for a good price with a knowledgable tour guide.

Overall I would highly recommend El Misti rooms to anyone looking for a very cheap accommodation in Rio de Janeiro.

Room Tip: The 4 bed option allowed for minimal shuffling at night and the ability to get to know all my roomma...
