“A Unique Hotel Experience On Rio's Legendary Ipanema Beach”
Reviewed 11 August 2009

My wife and I had the unique experience, of staying 4 days at the Philippe Staarck designed Fasano Hotel, on Ipanema Beach in Rio. There were so many special things about the hotel, it’s a bit difficult to know where to start. So let me begin with the vision that has made Staark, arguably, the world's foremost designer.

Unlike most 5-star hotels that tower over their locations, this hotel fits sensitively into its surroundings and feels surprisingly personal when you approach it. Staarck designed a facade that is not like any other in Rio. Its interesting in its details, but warm and welcoming, much like the attentive staff that greet you, often before you pass through the front door.

As you would expect at a fine hotel, the staff is aware you are coming and the paperwork is relatively short and simple to complete. A nice plus was that everyone seemed to know our names. It also appeared that everyone spoke English, and not just the front desk (which you would expect), but everyone short of the maid who attended our room every day (and even she made an effort to greet us and communicate.)

The check-in desk, itself, is the tip off to the design fireworks to come.It is a chunk of a beautifully finished tree trunk, about 15-feet long. It must literally weigh a ton. As you roam around the the lobby floor, you see one gorgeous element after another: walls of granite from the Amazon River riverbed; sinks and lighting fixtures made in part with alabaster; hallways lined in heavily grained, and perfectly matched, wooden panels; soft billowy curtains to balance the rare stone walls; classic - often one-of-a--kind - chairs, couches and coffee tables; fanciful chandeliers from Murano, Italy, and other art objects from other parts of the world. The visual feast just never stops. And it continues when you head up to your room.

Your senses are challenged the moment you exit the elevator. The walls of the entire landing are robed in fine wood. There is not a single, visible door. It takes a moment to realize that the back-lit glass, that circles the hallway, has each room number etched into it at the point where it hinges open. What a surprise! Once you enter the room, there are many other Philippe Staarck surprises, but I’ll save a few for you to discover on your own.

Apparently, the name Fasano is attached to fine dining, as well as fine hotels. In fact, there is an outstanding, spacious, and elegant, seafood restaurant in the hotel that is highly recommended. And, an “English” bar that appears to be the place to be, at the end of the day, for many of Rio’s attractive set. Fasano also owns at least two restaurants in Ipanema that are very popular. Which brings me to the location of the hotel.

Ipanema beach is as beautiful and romantic as the words and music of the iconic “Girl from…” The Fasano sits about 60 feet across the street from the sand of that beach with brilliant views to the mountains at the far end. We found ourselves, daily, ordering the prompt, delicious, room service breakfast, and eating it on our terrace while taking in the unique view. The hotel’s rooftop has a wonderfully designed lounging-type pool and bar that was being refinished when we were there, so I cannot speak about it from experience. But, having friends who live in Rio, I’m told it is one of the coolest places to be in town. I did, however, make daily use of the gym on the roof, with its ever-present attendant, happy to help me in any way, including physically working with me (stretching, etc.), helping chose and pump out great Brazilian music from a rocking sound system. Of course he spoke English and could give me all the towels, bottled water, magazines in various languages or turn on the TV on my machine. All-in- all a sweet experience.

Finally, beginning the day before we left, the concierge did cartwheels to find us an alternate way home to NY as there was a mechanical breakdown on the airline we were scheduled on the next day. We could get nowhere with the problem, but miraculously, she pulled it off. Nice ending to report.

There is clearly no hotel in Rio that has the extraordinary style and location of the Fasano Hotel. Add the attentive, professional staff, the overall high level of quality service and accoutrements, and the magical quality of Rio and Ipanema Beach. Everyone deserves the total experience at least once in their lives.

We spent two night in FASANO. Realy great. Price offered by hotel 680 USD, Price by agency 295 USD so be carefull. For the price of 680 USD its overrated.
The hotel is a perfect place to make your stay in Rio unforgetable but be aware of the prices. Dont change money in the otel: Rate more then 12% worse then at the nearby Bank/Casa de Cambio.. Pool-Aerea one of the best we ever saw.

Fantastic hotel for a sophisticated traveler. Location on Ipanema could not be better. Stores and great restaurants are within walking distance. Staff is incredibly professional, helpful and knowledgeable. Awesome rooftop with beautiful people pool scene. The bar Londra is very hip and a Rio hotspot not to be missed. The restaurant is top notch, although expensive so beware. Recommend an oceanfront view for optimal experience. Don't recommend courtyard views if you can help it, although purpose of stay is to enjoy Rio, the nightlife and the pool and beaches. The rooms are a bit dark, but that adds to a romantic mood... Enjoy!

Centrally located, near everything. From the outside it's like a 7-story atrium facing the ocean, a 5- mile beach stretch and the most magnificent mountains of Rio. From the Inside, after going through an elegantly quaint entrance, like the rest of the hotel, designed by a very inspired Philippe Starck, passing by ultra professional staff members at the reception area, you get into one of the high-tech elevators with a security card and on to your floor. The standard room we stayed in had a shocking view of the ocean and felt like a yacht with a deck and all; compact but great! From the bathroom's delicious shower you could see through a glass wall, the fabulous ocean views. The king size mattress, sheets, pillows, towels were regal. The exclusively for guests, rooftop lighted onyx stone turquoise pool surrounded by superb views of the whole Ipanema-Leblon beach front, endless ocean and mountains, especially at sundown or sunset, is a life altering experience... The splendor of this setting is overwhelming. When you arrive at Fasano... you arrive in Rio de Janeiro....

The Fasano is exactly what it bills itself as being; a chic hotel on the beach. And, you get what you pay for. The bed was so comfortable I never wanted to get out, it has the best room service of any hotel I have ever stayed at (even at 2 in the morning!), and the staff all spoke English, which helps as my Portuguese is limited.

The pool and deck are wonderful, the view is ideal, and the beach / ocean are right in front of you. Why would one want to go to Rio and not stay on the beach? I would recommend the Fasano to anyone that is heading to Rio.

Shockingly disappointed. Rooms were incredibly small and although bathroom was very stylistic, it wasn't very functional. Focus of hotel is definitely style and it appears to cater much more to the young, hip, Rio socialite crowd that occasionally swing by for dinner or drinks than the paying tourist or business traveler. This hotel definitely does not have their act straight. Seem amateurish at best when comapred to the Hotel Fasano in Sao Paulo. This is a particular shame given the exhorbant rates being charged.

The roof top bar/pool is very cool and relaxing. Views of Ipanema/Leblon are spectacular. However, service is utterly disappointing. Not sure how to explain attitude of staff at roof top bar. Not sure if it is arrogance, laziness or plain stupidity. Prepare to wait at least 30 minutes (or more) for any simple drink order. Not sure I understood why it took 30 minutes to get a caipirinha or plain fresh juice!?!?!? It was a total buzz kill just to constantly get their attention and follow-up on my order.

Overall, prepare to be utterly disappointed at this hotel. The guest, either business or tourist, is definitely not a priority at this establishment. Infact, I find it hard to believe that any member of the staff is actually professionally trained in hospitality service or management. Staff are rude, arrogant and not very accomodating. Not the kind of reception any traveler deserves in such a wonderful city. Staff alway appear uninterested and too cool or busy to answer any basic questions about city.

Do yourself a favor and check out any of the other beach front hotels in Ipanema and Leblon. Much more bang for the buck. May not have the uber cool boutique feel, but are definitely more trained in hospitality service. Will also cost half as much!

Overall, this hotel has a long way to go. Needs to decide if infact it wants to be considered a hotel or a simple playground for local Rio socialites.

This hotel is located on the famous Ipanema Beach of Rio... perfect location. The lobby is super cool, and it has a trendy bar/lounge that gets a fun crowd and lots of beautiful people. The rooms however are another story, the "hallway" area leading up to the rooms is very modern and quite big, but the standard rooms where a BIG disappointment, they are TINY, the small furniture (double bed, TV, miniscule night stands etc.) fit tightly, making you feel crowded and cluttered, and the only small window was facing their parking building (literally the headlights of incoming cars would wake us up at night) but the worse was the small uncomfortable bathroom that actually leaked droplets of "water" from behind the mirror...not what you would expect for UD$500 a night. We upgraded to a suite (at US$750 a night!!!) that at least had ocean view and a terrace. The bathroom was still very small and tight, and the room, although larger that the first, was definitely NOT worth what we paid for it. Food was decent but wayyyy over priced. The "spa" if you can even call it that, was a re-purposed standard room -with 1 massage bed instead of the room bed, kinda claustrophobic ... not very relaxing. The rooftop pool and bar area was amazing though, great view of Rio, nice big deck, cool onyx stone pool and friendly staff. I suggest going there for a night out, but I would not recommend staying there.
