Let me start with the good: great location in Barra da Tijuca right across the street from the beach, the staff were friendly, and the breakfast was decent.
But the hotel rooms need a complete refurbishment. They feel like they haven't been upgraded since 1979. The beds were hard as a rock. I like a firm bed, but this was unbelievable. And the internet service (not free, charged at BRL 10 per day) was so sllllooooow, I was wishing I had access to a dial-up connection, because it would be faster.
Paying what I paid for this hotel seems like highway robbery. The nightly rate was over US$200. But as I said in the title, in Rio you have to lower your standards. In almost any other major city in the world, you would expect a much nicer hotel for this cost. But Rio de Janeiro is a city of outdated, underinvested, overpriced hotels. I travel there three times a year for business, and Sol da Barra is not the only one. I can't say I fully understand why none of the hotels invest in their properties, but I have to believe the people coming for the 2014 World Cup and Rio 2016 Olympics are in for a shock.
