The plush reception with English speaking friendly staff and smart rooms (at least by the standards of hostels as still fairly basic) were certainly enough to justify the "design" in the title.
We thought we had booked a twin room but they gave us doubles, however when we looked at the reservation print out, we had booked "twin/double" and the hotel was full so my brother and I each took a night on the floor, there was just enough bedding to pull it off.
The air con coming from other rooms could be heard at night, but ear plugs got the job done. There was no other noise heard in the rooms while we there.
The street is a nothing street, and the room had no view. However it's only about 5 minutes walk to the beach. If you want to walk all the way down to Copacabana beach it's around 40-50 minutes. Taxis can be picked up out in the street after waiting a few minutes for one to come by. The hostel can also call one, of course. It's a quiet street so easy to arrive by taxi.
We paid around 220 R per person or 440 per the room, that's a world cup price for you, I would not pay that normally!
After we booked the room we originally got an email saying that they were changing the price (even higher) because it had been a mistake and it was the world cup period. However I replied and said as you have already charged our card and the reservation confirmation says "confirmed and guaranteed" you will have to honour it, which they did. It was unclear if this mixup was the fault of the hotel or the booking agent middle man.
At 7am we came down for breakfast which was when they said it would start however they were still casually putting it out and we had to wait until 7.15 or 7.30 which was annoying because we had a single day in Rio due to the world cup schedule. I had asked for an alarm call earlier, and it came about half an hour later. Of course, you may well argue that unless I am going to an international 4* hotel chain I shouldn't expect precise punctuality and I am applying Western standards unrealistically and perhaps even unfairly to Brazil. Well, maybe, but I'm just telling you what happened.
