“Nice hotel on Copacabana Beach”
Reviewed 18 September 2013

We stayed here for 3 nights after finding a deal. You will find that any beach front accommodation in Copacabana and Ipanema to be expensive. This hotel was presented well. Very clean hotel with nice small foyer. We had a room with a view which over looked the beach. We also had a spa suite. The only negative to our suite was related to the spa bath. The spa jets were unfortunately mouldy and the bath foam provided, resulted in brown bubbles. The accommodation seems to be popular with families and business people. There is a nice rooftop area which overlooks the beach. There is also a nice rooftop pool and spa, if you can ever get into it, whilst we were there it was controlled and overtaken by a thousand kids. (Forget about relaxing!) There is no free WiFI provided in rooms, there is only Free WIFI in the foyer area. (After 5 weeks of travelling and staying at various hotels we found this strange. It was the only hotel we found in South America to do this?) This was an average stay, however the breakfasts provided were top notch with a wide selection of hot and cold food. The fresh mango was amazing, which I had everyday. Due to the amount of families and business people, it lack a feeling of romance, if seeking romance I would probably stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 601. Great views of the beach. Spa jets were mouldy and some cable channels had so...

Nice hotel just across the road from the amazing beach. In no way can be graded as 4 star hotel (small rooms, old and unpleasnt shower towels, ants all over the room, early 90th type of aircon...). But - the view from the room (insist on ocean view) is great, the receptionists were professonal and helpful, some good restaurants nearbyand good breakfast.

I travelled mid June 2013 with my wife and my one and a half years old son.
Because of previous reviews I was afraid of what I was going to find here. I doubted between staying at Windosr Martinique or here and because of the view I chose the Astoria.
It is located right in front of the Copacabana Beach. Its safe, there are policemen and tourists everywhere.
Hotel staff was very polite and helpful, and they where very collaborative during our stay.
Not only they made reservations for us but my son had fever and they got me a thermometer in the middle of the night.
Bed was comfortable, big and even though they had given me a crib the three of us slept there.
Room had a table and chairs, and a desk. Tv was lcd or led. Cable had many channels. They had air conditioning which worked, hair dryer and a big wide closet.
Maybe the room wasn´t the most trendy, modern o decorated according to my kind of taste, but it was more than acceptable. What you see in their pictures is what it is.
Windows could be a little bit dirty because of the salt of the sea, some spots on the ceiling, you heard some nosies from the corridor or shower from the neighbour rooms. But none of that was upsetting or really relevant. Maybe in summer is more annoying because maybe it´s packed. But not now.
They had free WIFI in the lobby and breakfast room, an area with 30c (Reales) the minute and the same price in the room. Wasn´t very fast but worked.
Breakfast was good, with a lot of different options. Staff was always ready to swap dirty plates or glasses or to offer a chair to my son.
View from the deck is spectacular. There you will find a double little pool, which was clean and clear. There where tables and deck chairs.
A few steps from there you can find the gym, with bikes and treadmills. There is also a sauna.

In conclusion, even though it wasn´t a cheap hotel but it wasn´t expensive compared to the ridiculous prices for other hotels in Rio. It was worth my money I would recommend it. Just the view and location pay it off.

Room Tip: Pedir piso alto, con vista al mar, para no fumadores. Ask for high floor, ocean view, non smoker...

One of the best view of Copacabana Beach! From the top floor by the pool you can see the Corcovado and Cristo Redentor! Bedroons are bit small but confortable! Very nice Breaky, many options for food! Only problem is the front desc! No much help or kidness! If you need help you have to push hard! I recommend this hotel!

the only thing with the internet you have to be at the lobby otherwise they charge you.
but I have to say I rather stay at the Ipanema side than Copacabana side ( I dont know its my personal opinion)

Room Tip: Try Ipanema side, its only 10 mins by taxi

My 2 girl friends and I stayed there for 2 weeks in March of 2013. The pool is too small looks like a big hot tub they only have 3 lounge chairs and I think 4 sets of patio seating. Once we saw that when we arrived we decided to spend most of our days across the street on Copacabana beach. The rooms are clean, but a bit small, our window didn’t have a view; just the apartment building across from us. There was an old lady there eating almost every time we tried to open the window it was a bit weird so we had it shut the whole time were there. The bathrooms would get very foggy after every shower so I opened the bathroom window and had it like that throughout the duration of our stay. Which I think faced the hotels kitchen because every time we entered our room it would smell of either bacon, pastries, cakes, eggs, sausages (well it would pretty much smell like tomorrows breakfast). My friends and I would even joke before we entered our room of what it would smell like. The staff barely spoke English the lady at the breakfast door didn’t know room numbers in English and didn’t seem to care to learn(but the hospitality industry there is not the greatest like in other parts of the world). So we had to say our room numbers in Portuguese every morning when we went down for breakfast.

Copacabana/Ave. Atlântica is great when the sun is up; but as soon as it sets ‘parents leave your children in their rooms’. There are police cars on every major intersections yet there are prostitutes everywhere. We actually saw a woman try to rob 2 different men in front of our hotel in a 15-20 minute span. Every time we went out for a walk at night whether it being for dinner or to just enjoy the fresh air people would think we were “open for business” . We still can’t believe for an area like that, full of tourists people couldn’t believe 3 single young girls can travel together. If they didn’t think we were prostitutes they thought we were lesbians (very funny) we just couldn’t win in Rio.

Anyway back to Astoria Palace please note there is also another Astoria hotel called Astoria Copacabana about a block west ‘I think’ if you take a taxi make sure you say Astoria Palace near Copacabana Palace. There is also free Wi Fi on the hotel lobby so people tend to hang out there a lot especially bored teenagers with nothing to do because their parents decided to go on date night. The sad thing about this is, as soon as it hits 10pm old perverted men staying there would bring prostitutes to their rooms and you clearly knew it because they would stand there and change money to give it to them. The girls these men would bring looked the same age as the bored teenagers sitting at the lobby.(eww I know) This was pretty much the sad part of our hotel stay; but overall I think we could have gotten a better deal elsewhere we just paid for the location and nothing more. If I was to do it again I probably would put more money in and stayed at the Copacabana Palace (We went there for dinner and the service was superb!)
