“A real gem in the moutain...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2009

Stayed there 2 nights (only...!) in a private room which was realy afordable for Rio and what i got...
The location looks a bit far from the action but then it's realy not hard to get there either by bus or combi...good combination to get to the beaches was the combi + metro...
Plus once you've seen Ipanema and Copacabana, the real cool genuine stuff is definitly around santa teresa (the district where the hostel is) and Lapa (the other district realy near)... In fact some of the coolest night action was like 2 minutes by taxi from the hostel at a place called casa rosa...good variety of music, live or dj, mostly brazilian crowd but totally tourist friendly...
The breakfast at the hotel was good, fruits, cakes, bread, excellent juices, good coffee....plus just sitting on the patio one morning i saw like 10 monkeys laughing at dogs down the trees barking like crazy!
The view is totally amazing (pan do azucar and corcovado right there!) morning and night...
I did stay at another hostel in santa tereas (recommanded by lonely planet) and the difference was huge...vibe was so much better at casa 579, like felt way cleaner, rooms were actually so beautiful for the decoration, had a much better view, definitly quieter, private patio, etc! For the same price so casa was way better in my opinion....Smaller but you still get to meet cool traveler and staff....feels more like a private house with guests than a typical noisy hostel....
And truly people working at casa were all incredibly helpful, you ask where to go out, they know where to go as they actually know the place for real...really sweet people some of them from brazil other from abroad but they know brazilian culture and recommend authentic stuff...
Can't wait to go back to Rio and Brazil (such a huge country, i've been there only 3 weeks but plenty more to see)....
Cheers!
Nic

we stayed for three nights mid march and found it very good. Position right near the bonde and bus . We ate each night in the garage cantina very close by. The views are great and Teresa was very helpful with everything.

Went with a friend to spend a few days in Rio and found the accommodations and friendly service from Teressa and the staff really good! Our room was roomy, light, comfortable and clean and the breakfast was scrumptious! One morning at breakfast we saw 3 Toulcans fly by! The view is so lovely and serene and it was a pleasure to be in the common room and read, talk, or gaze out on the beautiful view. Totally recommend this place!

Teresa is a wonderful hostess! She made arrangements to have our 2 night stay in Rio de Janeiro very informative and comfortable, from being met at the airport to arranging a city tour, and taxi to our cruise ship. The views from this B&B are fantastic, and definitely a good place to stay in Rio!

Originally I had only planned to stay 1 night but after the first night I just kept extending. Casa 579 felt like a home away from home. The rooms are large and clean and the views are absolutely amazing!!!! From my room I had a birds eye view of Cristo to one side and Sugar Loaf to the other. I also had a huge balcony with hammock, great for relaxing and catching up on some emails. Teresa is a fantastic host and is a wealth of knowledge about the local area. The breakfast is delicious and having a view of the Cristo as you enjoy your morning coffee just tops it all off. I met amazing people at Casa 579 also and it really felt like my home in Rio. I loved my time there and just cant wait to get back and stay for longer!!! Thanks Teresa!!!!

Just the place I looked for, small, familiar, bargain price, with a positive atmosphere between lodgers and the people working there. I found it clean, quiet, with a great view of the city, in particualr from the roof (that was not too ready for coffee drinkers in the morning, but the view, the view!!
Surrounded by a green garden, on top of Santa Teresa, a minute´s walk from the Bonde - the tram line from the 1890s. For tram/streetcar nuts like me, it is perfect!
The Casa´s tips for places to eat and dance seems good. Also the practical stuff concerning getting around was accurate. I went to Gaucho´s, (oooops, it´s a secret, right?) a restaurant camouflaged as a garage, and all the things I tried, meat, fish, fake horse meat (why call it horse, if it is a cow?), was delicious and cheap.

I've stayed at Casa 579 twice in the past year. For about 10 days in September 2008 and again for 10 days in February 2009. I originally found it on the Internet and didn't really know much about it. Obviously, I liked it so much the first time that I went back. If you really want to feel like you live in Rio, and are not just a tourist, this place is for you.

First, it's a beautiful private house that has a spectacular view of iconic Rio scenery the large plate glass window in the breakfast / common room has an amazing view of both the Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugarloaf. It's the first thing you see when you are drinking your coffee in the morning and you know that there is only one place in the world you can be - Rio de Janeiro baby! It's a great way to start the day.

At first glance, Casa 579 looks like it might be a little off the beaten track. That was my major concern before went the first time. Fortunately, looks can be deceiving. The House sits right on the corner of a street with buses and Kombis (the collective vans) heading in all directions. One way goes right down through Santa Teresa, Lapa and toward the Centro. The other way to Lago de Machado, a major commercial hub with banks, stores, a pharmacy and a Metro stop with easy access to the Zona Sur beaches, etc. The buses and Kombi's come about every 10 minutes and you just hail them down on the street. Of course, it's also very easy to call a taxi to the house if you need one.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed staying at Casa 579. It's was the perfect place to explore the music scene in Lapa in the evening. Teresa, the manager, was totally clued in to where the best places were on a night by night basis. Wednesday is Forro night at Club Democaticos, etc. The music scene was my main interest but Teresa knows most of what else is going on in Rio as well and can advise you how to make the most of your trip. Football matches, dance classes, etc. My second trip to Rio was for Carnaval this year and Teresa was able to hook us up with one of the samba schools to march, in costume, in the Carnaval parade. Definitely a highlight.

Basically, after a couple days at Casa 579, I felt like I lived in Rio. I could jump on the bus, a kombi, or the Metro and get anywhere. I knew where all the cool music was playing, Santa Teresa had great places to eat, etc. And all the major tourist attractions were accessible as well.

As I said, I liked it so much I went back a few months later. It wasn't really like being a tourist. After two trips in a year, I sort of regard Casa 579 as my surrogate home in Rio. If that's the kind of experience you want to have in Rio, I couldn't recommend Casa 579 any higher.
