“Casa 579 . . . Superb!”

I cannot praise Casa 579 enough! Excellent B&B in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro. I felt completely at home from the moment I walked in the door. Teresa and her staff operate a wonderful property. You cannot find a better value for your money . . . nice rooms with spectacular views, terrific breakfasts, friendly staff, and quaint location.
Don't think of staying anywhere else in Rio.

I was only suppose to stay in Rio for a week, but I ended-up staying in Casa 579 for over a month. I traveled throughout Central and South America for over six months, and Casa 579 was def. my favorite spot to stay. If you want to see the "REAL" Rio then stay at Casa 579. I was volunteering at an animal shelter in Rio and Teresa (the owner of Casa 579) came to a local shelter adoption event with me! When i arrived in Brazil I only knew ONE word in the local language, but the English speaking staff translated just about everything for me. This place was clean and the views from the roof were insane.(All you have to do is go up to the roof-top balcony to take postcard quality photos of Rio). I would def stay here again!

For Brazilian standards, the place is quite pricey -- around $90.
Not the most glamorous location in Rio, and the nearest commercial plaza is a good half-hour walk.
We were unlucky that our suite did not have hot water running, but apparently that was an unfortunate coincidence.
Breakfast was all right, but probably because we were spoiled by better quality services elsewhere in this beautiful country.
Also, they have a pretty strict cancellation policy -- 7 days ahead of booking dates which is reasonable considering the place is small. Something to take into account if you are considering more flexible vacation plans.

As always we thank our customers for their reviews, good or bad. However when the review comes in not as good as we hoped, we are of course disappointed and look to see where we went wrong and how we can fix it for the next time which I am proud to say we are good at as our many positive reviews here on Tripadvisor show. In the case of this review we would like to comment as follows:

First of all with regards to price, the price the guest paid for an ensuite room with a view is one of the cheapest in Santa Teresa for what we offer. We strive to keep our prices affordable for what we offer - spacious rooms with views and terraces, service where we go out of our way to make sure you get the most out of Rio and the amazing views we are lucky to have thanks to our location.

With regards to our location, we are very proud to be located in the picturesque colonial part of Rio in a beautiful 5 storey house with an amazing 180 degree view to Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain. With regards to amenities, we have a restaurant at the end of our road (2 minutes walk), then there are additional shops and restaurants within a 15-20 minute walk. If guests prefer not to walk, then again at the end of the road (2 minutes away) you can take the famous Santa Teresa Tram (Bonde), a bus or a kombi (a smaller local version of a bus) or of course a taxi. The nearest commercial plaza or shopping mall is in nearby Largo do Machado but as Santa Teresa is the old colonial part of Rio, it does not claim to have shopping malls as its strong point. There are many other stores to choose from in Santa Teresa such as a supermarket, pharmacy (that delivers) and gift shops as well as many restaurants.

With regards to the availability of hot running water, we were only informed of this as the guests were checking out and leaving. In fact on investigation there was not a problem with hot water in the room, the guests had been trying to switch on the hot water system to get hot water incorrectly. We understand this can happen and when this normally happens this is brought to our attention and we show the guests how to do so. Of course it is hard to do that when we don’t know about the problem until departure – that is why we clearly say in our room literature – “if there are any problems, please let us know as soon as possible so we can rectify them”

The breakfast that we offer consists of freshly squeezed fruit juice, freshly baked breads, ham, cheese, eggs, yoghurt, freshly baked cake, various fresh fruits and of course tea, coffee etc. We can only apologise that this guest did not feel that this was of high enough standard.

With regards to our cancellation policy, we do have a 7 day cancellation policy – as a small establishment it is difficult for us to have people cancel at the last minute whilst in the meantime we have turned away other prospective guests, leaving us with empty rooms. We notify everyone of our booking and cancellation policy at the time of booking and furthermore if the situation does occur that the guest cancels we try and resolve the situation by contacting guests that have previously enquired for those dates and been turned away to see if they would still like to book. If we are successful in filling the room we of course do not charge the guest who is cancelling. In this particular case, these guests had already moved their reservation once with two days notice (with no penalty) and then they cancelled a second time, again with two days notice. We tried our best to fill the room but unfortunately were not able to. Many other pousadas in Santa Teresa have a 14 day cancellation policy, so we do not feel our 7 day cancellation policy is unreasonable, however understand that this may not work for everyone, hence we inform guests at the time of booking so they can make the choice that is right for them.

We of course are disappointed that this guest felt that their stay at Casa 579 was lacking as we love to have all our customers leave with a big smile and wanting to return. We do however, welcome the fact that Tripadvisor gives us the opportunity to respond to these reviews and put forward the situation from our perspective when this is not the case.

We stayed at Casa 579 for a couple of days in their private room.

Casa 579 is located in the quaint Santa Teresa neighborhood, a bit away from the touristy areas of Copacabana and Ipanema. However, transportation is quite accessible - you can catch a bus or kombi right outside, and a 10 minute ride down the hill takes you to the nearest metro station( Largo do Machado ). It is basically a charming house in a quiet neighborhood- so not too many shops/restaurants in the immediate vicinity, which could be a plus or minus depending on your point of view.

Our stay was quite comfortable. Teresa and the staff are quite helpful with directions/suggestions, and the taxi service they arranged to meet us at the airport was very useful. Breakfast was great. The house itself is nice- breathtaking views of both Corcovado and Sugarloaf mountain from the roof terrace. Some of the fixtures are a bit dated- we had a problem with the locks on our room, but to their credit, the staff resolved this as soon as possible, despite it being a Saturday night.

Overall, good value for money in Rio, and would definitely stay here again.

We stayed twice in Casa 579 both on our arrival at Rio (6 nights) and at the end of our stay in Brazil for another 2 nights.
The place is wonderful : an outstanding view, a great area to discover (Santa Terasa is so different from the noisy city, and charming with great street art all over) as well as very convenient with the Bondi at two minutes (the Bondi is the little tram which takes you downtown...a great and fun ride).
All of that is topped by the warm welcome of Teresa and her crew. Teresa is always helpful and has a solution for every request.
Casa 579 is the best you can find in Rio at this price.
I wish I had a similar address in Sao Paulo where I go twice a year for business.

I arrived late after problems with aircraft and a thieving (official) taxi driver, but there was no fuss, my name was on the board. The casa is located in an old "arty" part of the city way up the hills. You can even arrive there by tram ("Bonde") if you know where to get off. I stayed in the dorm which was OK, toilets and bathrooms with a few small problems. But i saw the rooms upstaris and they were very brightly coloured and artistically decorated. After arriving from Europe or America, the breakfast is extremely exotic, tropical juices, delicious cakes, unusual things, jelly, strange yoghurt. The guests in the dorm enjoy the same breakfast as the other rooms !
The owner/manager helped me with the theft. There is a wonderful rooftop with bar and sundeck, where you have a great view of the city and Christ Redeemer statue and sugar loaf mountain. There is a very cheap small restaurant nearby , serving typical Carioca food (black beans, rice, Farofa - grilled Manioc flour). There is a bus service to the centre costing 2.2 Reals , although i could never quite work out how to get the bus back (Rio bus stops have NO numbers). Taxi costs 10-12 Reals to the Casa.
It is located really high up on top of Santa Teresa, fairly long way from centre. There are some restaurants 1 km down the hill
