“Perfect Pousada”
Reviewed 6 March 2009

We recently got back from Brazil, and it was the best trip of our lives - and Casa Beleza played a huge part in that.
While it was the best trip ever, the flight there was the worst. We were delayed for two days, and missed our first night at Casa Beleza. Bindu was so helpful and understanding to our perdicement. She scheduled, rescheduled, and re-rescheduled our transportation from the airport - and even got money back from the cab driver when she realized we overpaid.
After finally arriving in Rio around midnight, we were welcomed by Bob the dog, and Antoine - who stayed up awaiting our arrival. He had our bags brought to our room, and brought us two (much needed) ice cold beers.
The room was beautifully decorated - modern, yet charming - tile, hard wood, exposed beams - lots of character. The bathroom was spotless, and had modern fixtures - with plenty of fresh towels for the bath and pool. The room had an air conditioner as well as huge dark wood french windows overlooking Santa Teresa.
The neighborhood is amazing - historic, yet real... in a way no ancient city in Europe is. Winding shady streets with archaic old mansions cut out of the jungle. It's a thriving community with people from all walks of life working, living and drinking together. There's music and art and delicious food everywhere. Do visit Bar do Gomes and Restaurante Marco (order the Feijoada). And take a ride on the Bondinho.
Bindu was extremely helpful with helping us plan our daily treks across Rio. She also helped us relax, after a day of sightseeing, by serving us the perfect caipirinha in the setting. The pool and gardens at the pousada are straight out of a fairytail, complete with wild spider monkeys turtles in heat.

Writing this is making me sad. I wish we never left.

We stayed at Casa Beleza for 5 days during the carnival. We had a FANTASTIC time! Would not hesitate to recommend it.
The place was great - large, clean, modern room in a beutiful building/location up in the hills. What really made it stand out over the other places we had stayed whilst in Brazil was the hospitatlity of Bindu and Antoine. They could not have done more to ensure we got the most out of our time in rio - helping us navigate our way around, sorting out taxis, and recommending restuarants. We were especially grateful for all the advice and info they gave us to help us to ensure we got the most enjoyment out of carnival - providing us with info on all the various blocos and info about the different samba schools we went to see in the samadrome. Oh yeah and not to mention the breakfasts!
This place is more expensive during carnival - where in rio isn't?? but we felt we couldn't have chosen a better place to finish off our three week trip

Casa Beleza has all the benefits of a boutique hotel. The stunning building is perched on a secluded hill top surrounded by tropical gardens and a pool, yet it's only a few minutes walk to the centre of Santa Teresa and a cheap cab ride to the beaches of Rio. With only three spotlessly clean and stylishly decorated rooms, it's exclusive but reasonably priced. The owners Bindu and Antonie are both absurdly glamorous, yet they still manage to be utterly charming and attentive to the needs of their guests. Bindu is a font of information and advice. Whether that's helping to organise a favela tour or recommending where to buy the best samba CDs She also makes the most delicious and lethal caipirinhas in Brazil! I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Casa Beleza. In fact it's the kind of place where you simply never want to go home.

We were a little nervous about staying in Rio and Santa Teresa in particular because of the stories you hear. But it is a great area - pretty, interesting, and a different experience to Ipanema, etc.

The pousada was reasonably straightforward to find in a cab and Bindu and her husband were very welcoming and helpful with tips on our arrival. The building is a great old colonial house and the room we stayed in was modern and spacious. They even organised our Rocinha favela tour for us with a crazy guy called Paolo - politician, philanthropist and general man of the people - all very bizarre but a great way to do it with a bit of a difference.

Highly recommended as a base for exploring Rio.

We stayed at Casa Beleza for the final few days of our trip, as a winding down after the hustle and bustle of visiting some of the main samba schools in Rio.
We found Casa Beleza a haven of peace and tranquility up in the Santa Teresa district, and after our earlier travelling round, we found it a great place to unwind, enjoy a few beers and leisurely stroll around the area.
The accommodation was first class and the setting amazing.
Bob the dog came as an extra bonus! - much loved pet at the casa!

Wow - this place is just amazing. Bindu and Antoine made us feel so welcome and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. The rooms were clean and very well furnished and touches like toiletries were very nice. Breakfast was great every day, the fresh fruit, bread and cake was something we always looked forward to.

Santa Teresa is definitely the place to stay, it is full of character and charm and we felt much safer than in the central areas of Rio. If you are going to Rio just for the beach then you may as well stay in the over priced hotels in Copacabana. But if you want a true Rio time, with Samba practice, amazing home cooked food in Bar do Gomez and rides on the Bonde with the locals then stay in Santa Teresa.

We arrived almost two hours late having travelled on the worst Iberia flight ever so having an English speaking taxi driver waiting was the biggest relief, it was more expensive then the meter, but I would recommend arranging the taxi through Bindu if you are coming late at night.

We had a lovely stay and will be recommending this lovely place all.

  • Liked — Location was great and the owners were just so helpful
  • Disliked — The beams in the room were very rough and would injury small kids

What an amazing place with equally amazing hosts! This was our first stop on our 15 day trek through Brazil and our experience at Casa Beleza was magnificent. The place is enchanting--with its high walls, beautiful wooden doors, amazing garden, charming decor, lovely rooms, and yummy breakfasts (especially that pound cake!) If that wasn't enough, the owners were icing on the cake. They made us feel extremely welcome, provided several options on how wee could spend our days, and explained the best and safest walking routes so that we could get around with ease. Casa Beleza's location in the artsy Santa Teresa is great--close enough to the bars and music in Lapa, but also private enough to enjoy a good book while relaxing in the tranquil garden setting. We loved Casa Beleza and our experience in Rio was that much more enjoyable because we chose the right spot! In fact, I think we kept searching for a little bits of the Casa B experience throughout the trip....it is not easily forgettable.
